Wild Fictions

'Brims with ideas and insights . . . Ghosh is at his sparkling best' IRISH TIMESWild Fictions brings together Amitav Ghosh's extraordinary writing on the subjects that have obsessed him over the last twenty-five years: literature and language; climate change and the environment; human lives, travel, and discoveries. The spaces that we inhabit, and the way in which we occupy them, is a constant thread throughout this striking and expansive collection. From the significance of the commodification of the clove, the diversity of the mangrove forests in West Bengal and the radical fluidity of multilingualism, Wild Fictions is a powerful refutation of imperial violence, a fascinating exploration of the fictions we weave to absorb history, and a reminder of the importance of empathy. With the combination of moral passion, intellectual curiosity and literary elegance that defines his writing, Amitav Ghosh makes us understand the world in new, and urgent, ways. Together, the pieces within Wild Fictions chart a course that allows us to heal our relationships and restore a delicate balance with the volatile landscapes to which we all belong. 'We owe a great debt to Ghosh's brilliant mind, avenging pen, and huge soul' NAOMI KLEIN, author of This Changes Everything

Life of a Counterfeiter

'Masterfully understated prose' New York Times Book Review'A Japanese literary master' Publishers Weekly, starred reviewA master forger lives in obscurity and disappointment, oppressed by the shadow of the artist whose work he copies. A young man embarks on an investigation into his family's past, prompted by a newspaper clipping and a vague memory of a beautiful young woman. And another young narrator is consumed with curiosity about his grandfather's mistress - and why she cherishes an old pair of gloves, given to her by a visiting Englishman.Unglamorous, unadorned lives such as this form the focus of Yasushi Inoue's tenderly observed, elegantly distilled short stories - two of which are appearing in English for the first time. With a haunting emotional intensity, they offer glimpses of love lost and lives wasted. Asking how we place value, what counts as real, and where the struggle for acceptance will lead us, each story is a perfectly balanced exploration of regret. These three luminous, compassionate tales showcase the mastery and exquisite talent of one of Japan's most beloved writers.Part of the Pushkin Press Classics series: timeless storytelling by icons of literature, hand-picked from around the globe.Translated by Michael Emmerich.Born in 1907, Yasushi Inoue worked as a journalist and literary editor for many years, only beginning his prolific career as an author in 1949 with Bullfight. He went on to publish 50 novels and 150 short stories, both historical and contemporary, his work making him one of Japan's major literary figures. In 1976 Inoue was presented with the Order of Culture, the highest honour granted for artistic merit in Japan. He died in 1991. Bullfight and Inoue's novella The Hunting Gun are also available from Pushkin Press.Michael Emmerich is a translator, editor and an professor in the department of Asian Languages and Cultures at UCLA. Deceit Brought us to Assam and Other Stories from the Barak Valley

Fresh from prison, a woman returns home to grapple with her husband's betrayal; accused of witchcraft, an aging midwife becomes the scapegoat for a tragedy; and a destitute widow's life takes a surreal turn when she is thrust into local politics. Barak Valley-lush, picturesque, and seemingly tranquil to outsiders-emerges in these stories as both tormentor and refuge, a witness to its people's quiet hunger for connection, belonging, and dignity. Whether it is a mother confronting her daughter's pregnancy out of wedlock, an octogenarian rediscovering her forgotten love for the sitar, or a child forming an unlikely friendship with an elderly man, the characters in this anthology reveal the singularity of seemingly ordinary lives.

The Penguin Book of Bengali Short Stories

A landmark new anthology of Bengali literature in English, including many previously untranslated stories 'A splendid guide to unmapped lands… [Sinha] is one of the best living translators at work bringing the Bengali classics into English… he writes with exceptional elegance and wit' Spectator The prose short story arrived in Bengal in the wake of British colonizers, and Bengali writers quickly made the form their own. By the twentieth century a profusion of literary magazines and journals meant they were being avidly read by millions. Writers responded to this hunger for words with a ferocious energy which reflected the turmoil of their times: these stories covered land wars, famine, the caste system, religious conflict, patriarchy, Partition and the liberation war that saw the emergence of the independent country of Bangladesh. Across these shifting geographical borders, writers also looked inward, evolving new literary styles and stretching the possibilities of social realism, political fiction and intimate domestic tales. A first in English, this anthology gathers together a century's worth of extraordinary stories. From a woman who eats fish in secret to the woes of an ageing local footballer, from the anxieties of a middle-class union rep to a lawyer who stumbles upon a philosopher's stone, this is a collection that celebrates making art of life, in all its difficulty and joy.

The History of the Vertebrate

‘On 20 December 2015 I became a mother and I went mad.’On a single day, Mar García Puig gives birth to twins and becomes elected to the Spanish Parliament as a member of the insurgent left-wing party Podemos. What might have been the best day of her life becomes the start of a terrifying ordeal; García Puig’s grip on reality begins to slip as she grapples with uncertainty, the weight of expectation, and misogyny in both of her new roles. In defiance of a culture that tells her the problem lies within, García Puig chooses to look outwards, examining the imbrication of madness and motherhood across centuries of science, myth, and politics while dissecting the ways in which women have been pathologized and banished from public life. At once intimate and epic, The History of the Vertebrate is a searing account of postpartum madness. Moving between memory, culture, and the history of medicine, García Puig transforms her experience into a story about the countless women who have felt that sanity was leaving them, and about the patriarchal forces that have silenced them.

Lány a cseresznyefán

Bondár-Andor Kata, a kötet szerkesztője.

Diana tükre

Meghökkentően sok csillogó alkalmi ruha, hímzett papucs, finom kalap, kincseket rejtő ékszeres és piperés ládikák kerültek elő, amikor a debreceni emlékházban a kurátorok Szabó Magda személyes tárgyait rendezték.

A stejně. Mám pocit, že proti němu nic nevím. Že to on, ne já, už všechno prožil. Vyzařuje z něj tolik bolesti. br br Pronikavě žlutá. Jako ta jeho pláštěnka. Moc výrazná. Jako on. br br Zpívat bříze je příběhem kontrastů. Mládí a stáří, naivity a cynismu, příliš velké snahy a přílišné pasivity.

Humeccan

A collection of short stories exposing human nature as mechanistic. The backdrop of our evolution is first painted via a quixotic character’s mission to alert his neighbourhood to coming doom. Two stories then follow different trajectories from the same inflection point of our shifting culture. One has doom averted, another careers towards the prophesied doom. Intimate tales follow, evoking both unseemly and more humane aspects of our nature. The central story, the dark heart, turns, presenting pathological behaviours as seen from the gene’s eye view and as resulting from forces that created us to be the gene-serving ape-machines we are. Further elaborating stories lead deeper into our psychology, dissecting the assumptions we make about ourselves and others. Projections are reflected back. We are challenged to justify our beliefs, and to confront a seemingly bleak view: that of a deterministic universe in which we evolved not for our wellbeing, but to propagate immortal genes. The final story in the collection imagines a future in which an evolved culture helps us live better with our evolved natures. Mechanical devices and scientific concepts are embraced in story titles, anchoring the narratives in the mechanistic character of human nature. The natural world reverberates throughout what is, ultimately, a humane vision.

Encountering Baboons and Other African Stories

Set in the years between 1970 and 1982 in three newly independent countries, these stories dramatize the interactions between different cultures in the post-colonial period. The Night Watchman, based on the theme of theft, tells the tale of an Englishwoman and her husband living in West Africa, who hire a local man to guard their property and become intimately involved with the health of him and his wife. In Dealing with the Health of the People, an American Ph.D. student discovers that everything must be bartered for, from articles for daily living, to his use of local labour, to providing health care for ordinary people, as he gathers data from a West African maternal and child health clinic for his dissertation. Encountering Baboons follows a young American teaching first year science at a Southern African agricultural college as he faces wild animals; prejudiced colonial attitudes; clashes between African and Western beliefs and practices; directing a group of students in performing Shakespeare’s The Tempest; relations with three very different women; and both political and natural storms.

Part of the Story

This rare self-portrait from pioneering publisher, writer and cultural activist Margaret Busby underscores her powerful legacy and celebrates some of the people and places that have shaped her exceptional lifeMargaret Busby has been at the heart of cultural life in the UK for over 50 years. From becoming Britain’s youngest and first Black woman publisher when she founded publishing house Allison & Busby, to editing the ground-breaking international anthologies Daughters of Africa and New Daughters of Africa, her many achievements are testament to her dedication to championing the lives and stories of others, particularly those throughout the world who have been marginalised by the mainstream. With little attention previously given to her own skills as a writer, Part of the Story is a unique opportunity to enjoy her own remarkable literary output. After the Tall Timber

A visionary reporter, novelist, essayist and critic, Renata Adler is one of our most renowned and unmissable literary figures. But she is first and foremost a journalist. This collection of her her non-fiction showcases her rigorous journalistic voice in twenty-one pieces that are concerned with, in her words, misrepresentation, coercion, and abuse of public process - and, to a degree, the journalist''s role in it.With a brilliant literary and legal mind, Adler parses power by analysing language: of courts, of journalists, of political figures, of the man on the street. In doing so, she unravels the tangled narratives that pass for the resolution of scandal and finds the threads that others miss. In these essays, Adler draws on Toward a Radical Middle (a selection of her earliest New Yorker pieces), A Year in the Dark (her film reviews), and Canaries in the Mineshaft (a selection of essays on politics and media), as well as uncollected work from the past two decades.

A čo slovenská tvorba?
