In Making Waste, the first book about refuse and its place in Enlightenment literature and culture, Sophie Gee examines the meaning of waste at the moment when the early modern world was turning modern. Gee explains how English writers used contemporary theological and philosophical texts about unwanted and leftover matter to explore secular, literary relationships between waste and value. She finds that, in the eighteenth century, waste was as culturally valuable as it was practically worthless—and that waste paradoxically revealed the things that the culture cherished most. The Origins of Democratic Thinking
The Athenians invented democracy – and as they grappled with the implications, they also invented democratic political theory. By reconstruing Protagoras the sophist, Thucydides the historian, and Democritus the cosmologist in the context of political developments and contemporary scientific, literary, and philosophical works, Cynthia Farrar's seminal study reveals the emergence of a distinctive and still cogent understanding of democratic order. All three thinkers wrestled with democracy's insistence on separating political from social identity and status. Unlike Plato and Aristotle, they constructed democratic theories that were genuinely democratic: addressed to citizens, and inviting them to interpret what their own and collective well-being demands in the world as it is. In a new introduction, Farrar makes the case for the continued relevance of the ideas explored in this book by recounting her own attempts to adapt Athenian structures of democratic citizenship and to reinterpret their democratic theory for the modern world.

Když tehdy v noci přitáh Jorge s tim, že někdo sejmul Julia, všichni mysleli, že si dělá prdel. Jenže nedělal. Byl to pekelně zkurvenej tah, zařvalo při něm pár našich a vo kejhák přišli i jiný. Moh sem bejt mrtvej taky. Ale nejsem. Bylo to jak posranej skok na liáně, co sme si ale nestihli přikurtovat k hnátě. Když na to dneska myslim, mám dojem, že se to celý vlastně stalo někomu jinýmu.
Možná vám to bude celý připadat jak vycucaný z řiti, ale něco takovýho se může stát leda tady v týhle díře světa, kde se věci dějou tak, že nezbejvá než kroutit škeblí. Ale nečekejte zas žádný zázraky. Lidi si furt myslej, že se tu umíme na požádání vznášet kus nad zemí a běžně se rodíme s prasečí voháňkou zaraženou do prdele. To se ale kurva pletou.
