The American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century, Volume 1 (LOA #394)

A diverse, unprecedented gathering of more than one hundred stories, representing work by fifty different writers. As much a nineteenth-century American invention as the cotton gin and the steamboat, the short story emerged here with a range of innovation and a variety of styles and subjects that has still not been fully appreciated. Diverse, wide-ranging, and unprecedented in its scope, The American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century gathers more than one hundred stories by fifty different writers. This first volume of Library of America''s two-volume collection of nineteenth-century American short fiction tracks the development of the American short story from Charles Brockden Brown''s fragments and Washington Irving''s sketches to Poe''s gothic tales of horror to Mark Twain''s humourous stories. Represented here by generous selections are all the major figures-Irving, Poe, Hawthorne, Melville, and Twain-as well as Rose Terry Cooke, also a major writer, restored to a place of prominence in this anthology with three unforgettable masterpieces. Among the many unexpected writers in this volume are: William Austin, so crucial to the development of Hawthorne and Poe; the antebellum Black writer and physician James McCune Smith, whose sketches in his ''Heads of the Colored People'' series lampooned the pseudoscientific racism of phrenology; Lucretia Hale, the author of the feminist fantasy ''The Queen of the Red Chessman,'' perhaps the greatest one-hit wonder of the mid-nineteenth century; Francis Parkman, whose early magazine fiction remains unknown today even to many scholars; and Fitz-James O''Brien, the author of such unnerving horror stories as ''The Lost Room'' and ''What Was It?,'' whose true themes and concerns twenty-first century readers, accustomed to reading gay fiction, will not miss. Unrivalled in its range and textual authority, the anthology includes biographies of each writer, a chronology of writers and the American short story from 1800 to 1900, and extensive notes.

The American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century, Volume 2 (LOA #395)

A diverse, unprecedented gathering of more than one hundred stories, representing work by fifty different writers. As much a nineteenth-century American invention as the cotton gin and the steamboat, the short story emerged here with a range of innovation and a variety of styles and subjects that has still not been fully appreciated. Diverse, wide-ranging, and unprecedented in its scope, The American Short Story: The Nineteenth Century gathers more than one hundred stories by fifty different writers. This second volume of The Library of America''s two-volume anthology of nineteenth-century American short fiction follows the evolution of American short story from Bret Harte''s mid-century tales of the Gold Rush frontier to Alice Dunbar-Nelson''s ''The Stones of the Village,'' a story about racial passing written around 1900 but not published in the author''s lifetime. Henry James, generously represented in this volume, dominates the second half of the century, though also represeanted here are the accomplishments of the so-called local-colour writers associated with the post-Civil War period. The indelible stories of Sarah Orne Jewett and Kate Chopin are justly celebrated examples of this strain, and those writers are represented by several stories, but ample space is also given here to stories by Constance Fenimore Woolson and Mary Wilkins Freeman. The reader will also discover the short fiction of Stephen Crane, in whose work naturalism finds its perfect aesthetic and philosophical expressionas well as the indispensable stories of such Black writers as Charles W. Chesnutt and Paul Laurence Dunbar. The unexpected selection of Thomas Nelson Page''s ''Marse Chan'' provides the context for Chesnutt''s groundbreaking explorations of racial identity and his use of African American speech and folklore. Other surprises in this volume include Francis Hopkinson Smith''s minor comic masterpiece ''Six House in Squantico,'' about a town left behind in the post-bellum South. Unrivalled in its range and textual authority, the anthology includes biographies of each writer, a chronology of writers and the American short story from 1800 to 1900, and extensive notes.

The Fenwick Letters Volume 1

The first of a two-volume edition of The Fenwick Letters covers 1797 to 1821, a period that marked the initial phase of Eliza Fenwick’s transnational odyssey, as she transformed from promising author to conservative schoolmistress and savvy businesswoman; from traveling in radical circles in London to establishing herself in colonial slave-dependent Bridgetown, Barbados; and from wife of radical journalist and author John Fenwick to single, working mother, trying to establish an independent life for herself and her children, Eliza Ann and Orlando. Eliza’s letters are consistently riveting, filled with sharply drawn portraits of the people, places, environment, politics, industries, and culture of each community she lived in.

Nem megyek én sehova

A kötet hét novellája napjaink Macedóniáját és a külföldre kivándorolt macedónok világát jeleníti meg. Vegyes házasságban élő nők, akik hazavágynak Macedóniába, származásukat titkoló vagy épp a beilleszkedéssel küzdő macedón házaspárok, balkániak az USA-ban – Buzsarovszka történeteinek szereplői igyekeznek otthon lenni a világban, mégis legtöbbször idegennek érzik magukat ott, ahol a történetek idején találkozhatunk velük. A kortárs macedónok világa sokban emlékeztet saját kelet-európai valóságunkra: politikai és gazdasági válság, kivándorlás, identitáskeresés, kilátástalan hétköznapok. Buzsarovszka szereplőit leginkább monológok, párbeszédek, levelek segítségével ismerjük meg, ugyanakkor a hétköznapok tárgyi világa is ismerős lehet a magyar olvasóknak.

Foxes for Everybody

Meditations on time, motherhood, and the ordinary beauty of everyday life Like a newborn's patterns of sleeping and waking, the revelations of motherhood don't follow a reasonable schedule, and there's no clocking out. Organized around the hours of the day, Foxes for Everybody gives voice to the marvels, fears, absurdities, and astonishments of parenthood. These essays offer twenty-four glimpses into how we experience time, our families, our planet, and all of those small moments that aren't small at all. In memories and reflections that weave through tornadoes and jellyfish, cemeteries and carousels, mortality, mental health, and the exquisite gift of a perfect sentence, acclaimed writer Catherine Pierce reminds us that fear and joy can and do live side by side, and urges us to stay awake - even when, especially when, we're at the brink of exhaustion - to the possibility of wonder.

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

'You'd think it should be the simplest thing. Walking. Just one foot in front of the other. But it never ceases to amaze me how complicated things can be.'Harold Fry never meant to be a hero. The Virago Book of Friendship

A fond, fascinated look at women''s friendship through the fiction, diaries, and letters of friends''A highly entertaining, often instructive anthology bursting with every kind of amicable - or inimical - anecdote . . . Cooke has dug deep and uncovered nuggets of pure gold in every form of writing . . . a delicious book about the great power and strength of real friendship'' TABLET Friendship, a timeless subject, has never been more debated, something that has to do both with the internet - the perils of WhatsApp groups, the agony of ghosting - as well as with a growing awareness that loneliness is increasing in our society. Friendship has become a matter of urgent inquiry to therapists, scientists and sociologists. We understand its importance more and more, not only as a comfort and a privilege, but as vital to our health. But it''s hard to get inside friendship: its particular intensity and its miraculous ease; its tendency to wax and wane; its ability to inspire both delight and despair. This is the territory of novels and poems, diaries and letters, comics and graphic novels - and it is where the innovative and wide ranging Virago Book of Friendship steps in, bringing together work by more than 100 writers. From Jane Austen to Edith Wharton and Virginia Woolf, from Dolly Alderton to Sarah Waters and Meg Wolitzer and, it celebrates and investigates friendship between women from first encounters to final goodbyes, from falling out to making up again.''A treasure chest'' THE TIMES''An uplifting anthology'' HARPER''S BAZAAR''A fascinating document'' LITERARY REVIEW''An exhilaratingly wide array'' SPECTATOR

Athena's Sisters

Athena's Sisters transforms our understanding of Classical Athenian culture and society by approaching its institutions—kinship, slavery, the economy, social organisation—from women's perspectives. It argues that texts on dedications and tombstones set up by women were frequently authored by those women. This significant body of women's writing offers direct insights into their experiences, values, and emotions. With men often absent, women redefined the boundaries of the family in dialogue with patriarchal legal frameworks. Beyond male social and political structures, women defined their identities and relationships through their own institutions. By focusing on women's engagement with other women, rather than their relationships to men, this timely and necessary book reveals the richness and dynamism of women's lives and their remarkable capacity to shape Athenian society and history.

A ráadás azé, aki kérte, aki várja. Fogadja szeretettel.

A Question of Belief

It’s a day like any other, and you’re queuing at the level-crossing. Or, are you hoping to go on retreat and get away from it all. Maybe you know that kindly old lady with her magnificent black cat. But do you really know what’s going on inside the head of that man who’s just rescued an elderly couple from an ongoing train? What do you make of that sober-looking priest? Are these people – and others you’ll meet – what they seem? Perhaps they are. But, if not, what would you do? The sort of help needed may be well beyond the scope of Google, or even the emergency services. But perhaps I’ve got it all wrong, and you’re one of those rare people who see beyond the everyday. Who is ready to listen and believe. You may even have seen something yourself: the tip of an angel’s wing, or a figure that simply melts away. Or, maybe, just maybe, you’re sitting in front of a blank sheet of paper or an empty screen, and could do with a little supernatural help and inspiration. If so, these stories are for you. After all, in the end, it’s all a Question of Belief.

A čo slovenská tvorba?
