Henry James, generously represented in this volume, dominates the second half of the century, though also represeanted here are the accomplishments of the so-called local-colour writers associated with the post-Civil War period. Nos, kedves olvasó, a cím úgy született, hogy néhány felnőtteknek szóló könyvem elnyerte az Önök tetszését. Tapsot ugyan nem hallottam, de leveleik, telefonhívásaik és a könyvek fogyása alapján mégis hallani véltem.
Remélem, nem tévedtem. Így aztán az Önök biztatására kerekedett ki rövid írásaimból ez az új kötet.
Ráadást, ugye, a koncerteken az előadóművészek szoktak adni, ha elég kitartóan tapsol a közönség. Én nem állok pódiumon, csak itthon kopogok öreg írógépemen, és nagyon örülök, ha tetszik, amit írok.
Ha valakinek megy a késői busza, indul a vonata, vagy egyébként is elege volt, hát nyugodtan kászálódjék.

A Question of Belief
It’s a day like any other, and you’re queuing at the level-crossing. Or, are you hoping to go on retreat and get away from it all. Maybe you know that kindly old lady with her magnificent black cat. But do you really know what’s going on inside the head of that man who’s just rescued an elderly couple from an ongoing train? What do you make of that sober-looking priest? Are these people – and others you’ll meet – what they seem? Perhaps they are. But, if not, what would you do? The sort of help needed may be well beyond the scope of Google, or even the emergency services. But perhaps I’ve got it all wrong, and you’re one of those rare people who see beyond the everyday. Who is ready to listen and believe. You may even have seen something yourself: the tip of an angel’s wing, or a figure that simply melts away.
