Beowulf
The Old English epic poem Beowulf has an established reputation as a canonical text. And yet the original poem has remained inaccessible to all but experienced scholars of Old English. This book aims to present the poem to readers who want to know what makes it such a remarkable work of art, and why it is of such cultural significance. Most readers will only have encountered Beowulf through one of its many translations or adaptations; others have had to take on this unique survivor from a past era as a challenging translation exercise, part of their academic study of the poem. Pursuits of Settler Belonging in Contemporary Australian Memoirs
The book focuses on various ways of articulating settler belonging in Australian memoir since the turn of the 21st century. After Australia witnessed a reinvigorated public interest in the revisionist history of European settlement and colonial violence, resulting in the dispossession of Indigenous people and damaged settler–Indigenous relations, Australian settler majority has experienced an unsettlement of their sense of belonging, or the so-called “setter anxiety.” The book analyzes how settler (un)belonging is narrativized in popular memoirs written by Australian public intellectuals, such as historians, artists, writers, and commentators, in the period after 2000. These memoirs of settler belonging share one aspect: they all ask and seek answers to the implicit question, how to belong as a White settler who bears witness to the legacy of violent colonization vis-a-vis continuing Indigenous dispossession? How to justify the settler presence in and love of the land that was stolen from First Australians? The individual chapters examine historians’ memoirs, White women’s travel narratives, experimental place-writing, and eco- and landscape memoirs, tracing a gradual shift in literary representations of settler anxiety and detecting new perspectives on what can be called ethical settler belonging.

Život většiny obyčejných Neapolců ovlivňuje „systém“ čili camorra a oni často musejí volit mezi přikázáním Božím a pravidly diktovanými lokálními božstvy zločinu, moci a mamonu.
Andrej Longo se životu Neapole a jejích obyvatel věnuje ve své tvorbě soustavně. Třebaže od prvního vydání povídkové sbírky Deset uběhlo bezmála dvacet let, situace běžných Neapolců, zejména těch méně majetných, se rozhodně nezlepšila.
V deseti povídkách nazvaných podle jednotlivých přikázání Božího Desatera jsou někdy na ploše hodin, jindy dní a jen výjimečně celých let technikou intimního pohledu zobrazeny jak těžkosti lidí, kteří se snaží vzdorovat vábení všudypřítomného mafiánského „systému“, nehřešit a jednat správně, tak i problémy těch, kteří se s tímto systémem, jenž město ovládá, zapletou, podlehnou mu a začnou uctívat jeho bohy. Přítomnost camorry je často jen naznačená, ale odráží se ve způsobu a pokřivenosti uvažování i jednání jednotlivých postav. Autor v mistrné zkratce a prostřednictvím autentických promluv a svižných dialogů rozkládá zavedené představy o životě pod Vesuvem – například ty o posvátnosti rodinných vazeb a „kmenové“ soudržnosti –, zároveň však ukazuje, že i z prohnilého podloží vyrůstají lidé schopní hrdinně odolávat vnějšímu tlaku, aby neztratili sami sebe. Třebaže někdy za to platí cenu nejvyšší.

Pětice próz, již přináší tento svazek jeho Spisů, vyšla v roce 1852. Nerval v těchto souborech vesměs realizoval zvláštní asambláže textů různého data, zároveň heterogenní i podivuhodně jednotné svou hlubinnou tematikou.
Lorelei vznikala od roku 1838, kdy Nerval vykonal společně s Alexandrem Dumasem svou první cestu do Německa, aby nasbíral materiál k Leovi Burckartovi, dramatu, které se chystali společně napsat a které mělo podat obraz morálního stavu německé společnosti po napoleonských válkách. Jeho „cestopis“ ovšem není tolik historií měst a pamětihodností jako spíše výrazem vnitřního univerza toho, kdo vypráví.
Galantní bohéma a její přepracovaná verze Malé zámky bohémy jsou nostalgickými vzpomínkami na šťastná bohémská léta prožitá v romantickém „malém kroužku“ v pařížské rue du Doyenné a příležitostnými zamyšleními nad otázkami, jež mu kladla jeho vlastní tvorba: jaký je vztah prózy a veršů, jakou poezii psát dneska, jaké kouzlo v sobě nesou staré lidové písně a jaký je vztah slova a hudby.
Říjnové noci vznikly v době, kdy choroba Nervalovi zahradila obzory a někdejšímu poutníku Orientem bylo nyní dovoleno nanejvýš vyjet si kousek za Paříž. Zachytil tu své potulky noční Paříží – Paříží pochybných čtvrtí a bizarních setkání. V Procházkách a vzpomínkách, jednom z posledních Nervalových textů – napsaném paralelně s „Aurelií“ – jde ještě jednou, naposledy, především o pouť vlastní pamětí, a ta jako by právě zde dospěla k poslední hranici, až k těm nejranějším vzpomínkám, za nimiž se už rozevírá tma nevědomí: ke vzpomínkám na dopisy od matky, které mu psala, než ji pohřbili „v chladném Slezsku, na polském katolickém hřbitově ve Velkém Hlohově“.
