Nepomohlo ani hudobné spracovanie a operu po niekoľkých reprízach stiahli z repertoáru moskovského Bolšovo teatra, pretože krátko po jej uvedení vyšiel v komunistickom denníku Pravda článok s názvom Chaos namiesto hudby. V texte, ktorého autorom bol zrejme sám Josif Stalin sa okrem iného píše: „Skladateľ zrejme úplne zabudol, čo od neho sovietski poslucháči očakávajú. Podľa všetkého úmyselne zašifroval svoju hudbu a zamotal jej znenie tak, aby ju ocenili len estéti-formalisti, ktorí stratili zdravý vkus.“ Tento postoj na dlhé desaťročia poznačil aj vnímanie samotnej predlohy.
