The Virgin Suicides

Introducing the Collins Modern Classics, a series featuring some of the most significant books of recent times, books that shed light on the human experience - classics which will endure for generations to come. That girl didn't want to die. She just wanted out of that house. She wanted out of that decorating scheme. The five Lisbon sisters - beautiful, eccentric and, now, gone - had always been a point of obsession for the entire neighbourhood. Although the boys that once loved them from afar have grown up, they remain determined to understand a tragedy that has defied explanation. The question persists - why did all five of the Lisbon girls take their own lives? This lyrical and timeless tale of sex and suicide that transforms and mythologizes suburban middle-American life announced the arrival of one of the greatest American novelists of the last thirty years. 'A flare from my own secret world, all the inchoate longings and obsessions of being a teenager somehow rendered into book form' Emma Cline, author of The Girls

Belladonna

An excoriating work of fiction that references the twentieth century's darkest hours Andreas Ban is a writer and a psychologist, an intellectual proper, but his world has been falling apart for years. When he retires with a miserable pension and finds out that he is ill, he gains a new perspective on the debris of his life and the lives of his friends. In defying illness and old age, Andreas Ban is cynical and powerful, and in his unravelling of his own past and the lives of others, he uncompromisingly lays bare a gamut of taboos. Andreas Ban stands for a true hero of our times; a castaway intellectual of a society which subdues every critical thought under the guise of political correctness. Belladonna addresses some of the twentieth century's worst human atrocities in a powerful fusion of fiction and reality, the hallmark of one of Europe's finest contemporary writers. Translated from the Croatian by Celia Hawkesworth

As long-buried secrets are revealed, and lovers new and old appear, can these four lost adults find their way back to each other? And more importantly, can they do it without killing each other? A hilarious and deliciously sun-scented novel about the courage it takes to reveal our true selves and the pleasures and perils of family.

Things Remembered and Things Forgotten

'If we want to understand what has been lost to time, there is no way other than through the exercise of imagination ... imagination applied with delicate rather than broad strokes'. So wrote the award winning Japanese author Kyoko Nakajima of her story, Things Remembered and Things Forgotten, a piece that illuminates, as if by throwing a switch, the layers of wartime devastation that lie just below the surface of Tokyo's insistently modern culture. The ten acclaimed stories in this collection are pervaded by an air of Japanese ghostliness. In beautifully crafted and deceptively light prose, Nakajima portrays men and women beset by cultural amnesia and unaware of how haunted they are - by fragmented memories of war and occupation, by fading traditions, by buildings lost to firestorms and bulldozers, by the spirits of their recent past.

Plynulo strieda dve časové roviny, Amsterdam v období zlatého veku a nacistické Nemecko, a skúma vnútorné životy týchto dvoch záhadných postáv.

Privádza nás medzi ľudí na úplnom okraji spoločnosti - zbedačených pracovníkov vychýrených parížskych hotelov a reštaurácií a anglických tulákov, ktorých systém nezmyselne núti celý deň prekonávať veľké vzdialenosti medzi jednotlivými útulkami.

Vydání knihy podpořilo Ministerstvo kultury České republiky a Centre National du Livre.

A vendégkönyv

Ambiciózus, nagyszabású és áradó regény a gazdag, befolyásos New York-i Milton család három generációjáról, akik egykor a világot irányították. A férfi azzal vigasztalja a feleségét, hogy felvásárol egy New England-i kis szigetet. 1959 – A Crockett-szigeti Miltonok tovább bővülnek, minden szabad percüket a saját szigetükön töltik, a saját törvényeik között. Ogden felvesz egy határozott, törekvő, fiatal zsidó férfit, Len Levyt, aki nemcsak főnöke, de felettese gyönyörű, fiatal lánya, Joan rajongását is elnyeri. Amikor Len és barátja, Reg, az Európát is megjárt fekete újságíró meglátogatja a szigetet, a protestáns fehér felső középosztályhoz tartozó Miltonoknak először kell szembesülniük saját álmaik és világnézetük határaival. 2017 – A családi pénz elfogyott, a Sziget eladhatóvá vált. Elgondolkodtató írás a történelembe vetett egyénről. Kiemelkedő irodalmi stílusban megírt regény az amerikai múltról, amely a generációkon keresztül öröklődve mélyen átszövi a jelent is.

When We Cease to Understand the World

When We Cease to Understand the World shows us great minds striking out into dangerous, uncharted terrain. Fritz Haber, Alexander Grothendieck, Werner Heisenberg, Erwin Schroedinger: these are among the luminaries into whose troubled minds we are thrust as they grapple with the most profound questions of existence. They have strokes of unparalleled genius, they alienate friends and lovers, they descend into isolated states of madness. Some of their discoveries revolutionise our world for the better; others pave the way to chaos and unimaginable suffering. The lines are never clear. With breakneck pace and wondrous detail, Benjamin Labatut uses the imaginative resources of fiction to break open the stories of scientists and mathematicians who expanded our notions of the possible.
