Louis Pasteur (18221895) byl francouzský biolog a chemik, jeden z nejvýznačnějších vědců 19. století. Založil nové vědecké obory stereochemii, mikrobiologii, imunologii , objevil vakcíny proti sněti slezinné a vzteklině. Jeho jméno nese ve Francii více než dva tisíce ulic, Pasteur je i název jedné ze stanic pařížského metra. Tento znamenitý a nesmírně pilný vědec takřka neznal rodinný život, v divadle nebyl za celý život ani desetkrát. Mnohé významné výzkumy uskutečnil už jako těžce handicapovaný následky mozkové mrtvice, kterou utrpěl v roce 1864. Přesto nepolevil v pracovním nasazení a stal se doslova zachráncem hedvábnického průmyslu ve Francii i v dalších zemích, když odhalil původce moru bource morušového a navrhl zásady zamezující dalšímu šíření nemoci. Poslední třetinu života věnoval výzkumu nebezpečných infekčních chorob a jejich prevenci zejména očkováním. Vrcholem bylo vyvinutí vakcíny proti vysoce smrtelné nemoci, vzteklině, po předchozích pokusech na psech a pravděpodobně i na sobě samém. O tom všem vypráví velmi podrobný Gelův životopis. Kromě autobiografických dat a detailního popisu Pasterových výzkumů, metod práce i sisyfovských bojů se zaslepenými odpůrci nabízí kniha vzrušující pohled do klasického období mikrobiologie (golden age) ve druhé polovině 19. století, do bohatýrské doby průkopníků tápajících v moři neznalostí a objevujících základní zákonitosti s nasazením, a někdy dokonce obětováním vlastního života.
