The past few years have seen a revolution in our ability to map whole genome DNA from ancient humans. With the ancient DNA revolution, combined with rapid genome mapping of present human populations, has come remarkable insights into our past. This important new data has clarified and added to our knowledge from archaeology and anthropology, helped resolve long-existing controversies, challenged long-held views, and thrown up some remarkable surprises.
The emerging picture is one of many waves of ancient human migrations, so that all populations existing today are mixes of ancient ones, as well as in many cases carrying a genetic component from Neanderthals, and, in some populations, Denisovans. David Reich, whose team has been at the forefront of these discoveries, explains what the genetics is telling us about ourselves and our complex and often surprising ancestry. Gone are old ideas of any kind of racial 'purity', or even deep and ancient
divides between peoples. Instead, we are finding a rich variety of mixtures. Hmotná kultura šlechtických sídel severovýchodních Čech
Kniha se věnuje hmotné kultuře šlechtických sídel v severovýchodních Čechách ve středověku a raném novověku. Ta přitom není ve středu zájmu autora jen sama o sobě, ale i pro svou výpovědní hodnotu pro poznání každodenního života obyvatel (nejen) vybraných sídel. Na základě zdokumentovaných a vyhodnocených artefaktů různého materiálového složení a funkce lze doložit některé hospodářské aktivity v zázemí či přímo areálu hradů a tvrzí, z nichž kolekce předmětů pocházejí.
Militaria zase ilustrují obrannou podstatu sídel a jejich výrazná koncentrace napadení nepřátelskými vojsky. Chronologické ukotvení dokumentovaných předmětů je možné založit na porovnání a nalézání analogií s dalšími artefakty z různých lokalit ve vybraném regionu i z dalších oblastí u nás. V některých případech lze využít pro přesnější časový rámec života daného sídla zprávy historických pramenů; ty zároveň pomáhají k zpřesňování možných chronologických fází ve vývoji hmotné kultury. V úvodní části jsou představeny lokality, ze kterých pocházejí významnější nálezové kolekce.
V hlavní části textu jsou pak podrobněji vyhodnoceny vybrané a dosud nepublikované soubory. Jedná se zejména o nálezy z hradů Brady, Bradlce, Břečtejna, Červené Hory, Kumburku, Pecky, Rotemberku a tvrze Javorníku. Přehledně jsou zpracovány soubory stolní a kuchyňské keramiky, dále pak kamnářské keramiky a kovových nálezů. Poslední část práce shrnuje poznatky o artefaktech i každodennosti šlechtických sídel plynoucí z nově vyhodnocených nálezových kolekcí a doplňuje je o již publikované soubory ze sledovaného území.
Součástí knihy je bohatá obrazová příloha zpracovaných souborů a nejzajímavějších nálezů.

Eltűntek, mint az avarok... - Avar kori temető Zamárdi-Rétiföldeken
"A Balaton déli partján található Zamárdi város belterületén húzódik a Kárpát-medence máig ismertté vált legnagyobb sírszámú avar kori temetője, amely mintegy 5-5,5 hektár kiterjedésű. Eddig a temetőnek közel 2700 sírja került feltárásra, és még majdnem ennyi feltáratlan. A sírok 95%-át egykori fosztogatók feldúlták, kirabolták, de ennek ellenére a temető a korszak egyik leggazdagabb lelőhelye. Az előkerült változatos leletanyag a temetőt használó közösség több gyökerű anyagi műveltségéről, részben etnikai összetettségéről, sokirányú kereskedelmi kapcsolatrendszeréről és különböző irányból érkező kulturális hatásokról árulkodik. A keleti, nomád kulturális gyökereken kívül helyi, késő antik, bizánci és germán elemekből ötvöződött e közösség kultúrája.
Az 1997-ig feltárt 2368 sír anyagának tudományos igényű közlése és feldolgozása már elkészült, azonban a 2015-ben újrakezdett ásatás eredményeiről eddig kevés információ látott napvilágot, hiszen
a leletanyag restaurálása és feldolgozása még folyamatban van. Ennek ellenére úgy gondoltuk, hogy az eddigi eredményeinkből ízelítőt nyújtunk egy-egy új jelenség, érdekesebb leletegyüttes jellegzetességeinek bemutatásán keresztül. Megfigyeléseink jól illeszkednek a korábbi kutatások eredményeihez, ezért a régebbi ásatás anyagából is emeltünk ki tárgyakat, így törekedve a temető legfontosabb jellegzetességeinek számbavételére. Szakmai mondanivalónkat színes rekonstrukciós rajzokkal "keltettük életre".
A temető ásatása tovább folytatódik, és reméljük, hogy minden egyes újabb sír feltárása hozzájárul ahhoz, hogy még pontosabb, hitelesebb képet tárhassunk az érdeklődők és a szakma elé a Rétiföldeken temetkező avar kori közösségről."
