A Trianont követően Csehszlovákiába került magyarság önmeghatározásában, valamint az új - immár kisebbségi - helyzet feldolgozásában fontos szerepe volt annak az első értelmiségi nemzedéknek, amelynek tagjai a csehszlovákiai egyetemek cserkészköreiben találtak egymásra, s akiknek egyik legerősebb csoportja 1928-ban Sarló név alatt szerveződött mozgalommá. Ez az 1900-as évek elején született, kisgyerekként még a Monarchiában szocializálódó, de már jórészt a kisebbségi helyzetben felnőtté váló generáció volt az első, amelynek a családi neveléstől az iskolákon át egészen a pályakezdésig minden ponton szembesülnie kellett azzal, hogy életének, identitásának állampolgári, jogi, gazdasági, foglalkozási feltételeit nem a magyar, hanem a csehszlovák nemzetállam határozza meg, miközben anyanyelvi, kulturális, történeti önazonossága magyar maradt. A Sarló mozgalomban megszerveződött fiatal értelmiség a kisebbségi helyzetben felerősödött nemzeti és szociális problémáknak a felmérését és megoldását tekintette elsődleges feladatának. Ezek középpontba állításával, összekapcsolásával pedig az alapvetően nemzedéki szerveződésben fokozatosan egyre nagyobb hangsúlyt kapott a baloldali tájékozódás.
A kötet célja a Sarló mozgalom történeti leírása mellett a pár évre szoros eszmei közösséget alkotó fiatal értelmiségi nemzedék egyéni és közösségi identitásának, valamint a csehszlovákiai magyarságról alkotott véleményének a vizsgálata. Ezzel párhuzamosan az államváltás következményeit, az állampolgári és a nemzeti lojalitás folyamatos konfliktusait elemzi. A mű olyan elfogulatlan és kiegyensúlyozott mélyelemzésre törekszik, amelyre a mozgalom történetének egészére vonatkozóan mások még eddig nem vállalkoztak.
Války růží (Střet Lancasterů a Yorků 1455–1485)
Vláda Jindřicha VI. (1422-1461) z lancasterské větve dynastie Plantagenetů vyústila v jeden z nejničivějších konfliktů, jaký se kdy odehrál na území ostrovního království. Autorita panovníka se ocitla v hlubokém úpadku, ambice mocných aristokratických rodů rozdělily Anglii, v zemi zavládl chaos a faktické bezvládí. V roce 1461 královská koruna spočinula na skráních Eduarda, hraběte z March, potomka starobylého rodu Yorků. Trvalo však téměř deset let, než Eduard IV. dosáhl rozhodného úspěchu v bitvách u Barnetu a Tewkesbury, a triumfálně tak završil své vítězství. Lancasterové byli zničeni. Třebaže v Anglii zavládl opět řád a stabilita, touha po královské koruně zasela rozkol mezi příslušníky vládnoucí dynastie. Po smrti Eduarda IV. se znovu rozhořel boj o moc. Krátká vláda Richarda III. (1483-1485), která skončila nečekaně jeho porážkou u Bosworthu, znamenala konec Yorků na anglickém trůnu. Výsadní místo na mocenském výsluní získal rod Tudorovců. Anglie tak vstoupila do nové éry svých dějin.

Chvála nacionalismu
Po dlouhých letech hanobení národního státu ve jménu univerzalistické ideologie opět nastává čas, abychom ocenili ctnosti a přednosti nacionalismu. Izraelský politolog vysvětluje, že svět má na výběr pouze dvě možnosti: řád nezávislých národních států, anebo univerzální světové impérium. K němu ostatně směřovaly všechny čtyři totální, děsivé střety: třicetiletá válka i války napoleonské, stejně jako první a druhá světová válka.
„… na rozdíl od impéria je nezávislý národní stát mírumilovný, odmítá avanturismus v zahraniční politice a zábor cizích zemí. Řád národních států nabízí možnost kolektivního sebeurčení, plodného soutěžení a maximálního rozvoje… Pouze národní soudržnost a vzájemná loajalita umožňuje svobodné instituce, demokracii a osobní svobody. Tak zásadní výhody jiné politické uspořádání světa nenabízí.
Buďme proto nacionalisty. Nemluvím jen o vlastenectví, chvályhodné věrnosti údělu svého národa a jeho zájmům. Jde o prospěch lidstva, protože pouze v globálním řádu nezávislých národů lze usilovat o jedinečné kolektivní cíle… Nacionalista má velké poslání stát na stráži před imperiálním nátlakem nadnárodních institucí, odmítat globální ideologii, jež odvrací politiky od potřeb lidí doma a svádí je k intrikánství a avanturismu v cizině… Nacionalista… má za úkol rozvíjet blahobyt, vnitřní soudržnost a kulturní dědictví svého společenství… aby národ sílil a stal se požehnáním pro své členy i vzorem a příkladem pro ostatní.”
Nacionalismus je také osobní ctnost, protože ze členů národa vytváří širší rodinu a probouzí v lidech pouto vzájemné oddanosti. Nabízí protiváhu k fanatismu univerzální spásy lidstva a k prosazování všeobecného konformismu. Je to nacionalismus, kdo pěstuje snášenlivost a přináší prospěšnou rozmanitost světa.

Obětí posledních pražských demolic byl Aulického Transgas na Vinohradech nebo nárožní, takzvaný Kozákův, dům na Václavském náměstí. Rusko 1917. Katastrofa
Zubovova kniha představuje osobitý pohled na ruské revoluce, únorovou a říjnovou, v roce 1917. Autor se zde formou přednášek zamýšlí nad příčinami politického a sociálního napětí v carském Rusku na počátku 20. století a nastoluje tezi, že revoluce nepropukla ze sociální bídy, ale byla spíše reakcí na pomalost a nedostatečnost politických změn. Bolševici, vedení Leninem, se neštítili jakékoli brutality a dokázali využít protiválečných nálad. Zcela nedemokratickým způsobem zničili existující parlamentní demokracii a namísto ní nastolili nekompromisní režim diktatury proletariátu, jenž ve svých důsledcích ovlivňuje ruskou společnost dodnes. Teprve úplným zbavením se říjnových iluzí může podle Zubova dojít ke zrození nové ruské demokratické a liberální společnosti.

Vzpomínky na Sýrii
Autor působil "v barvách" československé a později české diplomacie na ambasádách ve třech důležitých arabských zemích, které kdysi patřily k našim nejvýznamnějším obchodním partnerům. Sýrie, Libye i Irák ve své době budovaly pod vedením autoritativních vůdců svoji verzi arabského socialismu, nedávno ale nad rozsáhlými územími těchto zemí zavlály černé prapory Islámského státu a začaly se uplatňovat středověké zákony. Napoleon’s Plunder and the Theft of Veronese’s Feast
Napoleon's Plunder chronicles one of the most spectacular art appropriation campaigns in history and, in doing so, sheds new light on the complex origins of what was once called the Musee Napoleon, now known as the Louvre.
In 1796, four years after the founding of the First French Republic and only two days after his marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais, Napoleon Bonaparte left Paris to take command of his first campaign in Italy, aged only twenty-six. One year later, Napoleon's army was in Venice and his commissioners were determining which great Renaissance artworks to bring back to France. Among the paintings the French chose was The Wedding Feast at Cana by Paolo Veronese, a vast masterpiece that had hung in the refectory of San Giorgio Maggiore since it was painted in 1563.
Once pulled from the wall, the Venetian canvas crossed the Mediterranean packed among paintings commandeered from Venice and made its way by river and canal to Paris where Napoleon gathered his spoils of war - treasures from the cities of Rome, Milan, and later Berlin and Vienna. In 1801 the Veronese was placed on triumphant display in the Louvre, the former palace of the French kings, which had been transformed into a public museum that ostensibly belonged to the French people, but which also functioned as a monument to Napoleon's power.
Saltzman interweaves the stories of Napoleon's military campaigns, uncovering the treaties through which he obtained his loot, with the histories of the plundered works themselves, exploring how these masterpieces came into being. As much as a story of military might, this is an account of one of the most ambitious cultural projects ever conducted.
