Táborská pevnost a třicetileté války
Mimořádný význam Tábora jako strategicky položené městské pevnosti se za třicetileté války projevil v tvrdých bojích o jeho ovládnutí. Během českého stavovského povstání bylo město důležitou základnou rebelů a v letech 1620–1621 čelilo vleklému obléhání katolickými oddíly pod velením španělského válečníka dona Baltasara de Marradas y Vique. Kapitulaci Táborských z listopadu 1621 předcházel jejich obdivuhodně houževnatý odpor, který vzbudil pozornost i ve vzdálených oblastech Evropy.
„Velká politika“ se s táborskými dějinami protnula rovněž v samém závěru třicetileté války. V srpnu 1648 na město zaútočil generál Arvid Wittenberg, jehož výpad do jižních Čech byl součástí švédských operací cílících na ovládnutí Prahy. Švédové Tábor obsadili a drželi jej až do přelomu září a října 1649. Jejich více než roční pobyt v dobytém městě přinesl místním obyvatelům nepřebernou řadu útrap s dalekosáhlými společenskými a ekonomickými důsledky.
Kniha, založená na systematickém vytěžení dochovaných pramenů, přináší nový, ucelený pohled na táborské události z let 1620–1621 a 1648–1649. V širším kontextu dramatického dění za třicetileté války ukazuje nepřehlédnutelnou roli města nad Jordánem v zápasech první poloviny 17. století.

Dejiny Rimanov od založenia mesta XVII-XX
Titus Livius (59 pred Kr. – 17 po Kr.)
Titus Livius sa narodil v Pataviu, v mladosti študoval filozofiu a rétoriku, ktorú neskôr aj vyučoval. Po príchode do Ríma za vlády Augusta, prvého rímskeho cisára, sa upriamil na históriu a začal spisovať rímske dejiny od najstarších čias. V Ríme si našiel mnoho priateľov, ktorí ho v jeho zámere podporovali a spriatelil sa aj so samotným Augustom. Dejinám Rimanov od založenia mesta (Ad Urbe condita) venoval celú životnú energiu a pracoval na nich až do svojej smrti. Livius sa hneď od počiatku presadil medzi čitateľmi a poslucháčmi svojím štýlom a jeho dielo sa predčítalo na početných schôdzkach. Dejiny spisoval systematicky od najstarších čias až do svojej prítomnosti a do konca života stihol napísať 142 kníh, pričom posledná z nich končila udalosťami z roku 9 pred Kr.
Livius sa rozhodol dejiny spisovať pútavým spôsobom, a ako znalcovi rétoriky sa mu to podarilo. Snažil sa vžívať do historických udalostí a osobností a podávať o ich konaní čo najvýstižnejší popis, tak akoby ich oživoval a vdychoval im život, a svojím spisovateľským umením ich kriesil a robil nesmrteľnými. Liviove dejiny majú plynulý dej a autor ich spestroval rôznymi príbehmi o výnimočných skutkoch mnohých osobností.
Livius zhrnul do svojich Dejín všetky najvýznamnejšie udalosti najstaršej rímskej histórie až do jeho súčasnosti. Stal sa najvýznamnejším dejepiscom svojej doby a väčšina diel starších dejepiscov pre obľubu jeho Dejín upadla do zabudnutia. Z Liviovho diela neskôr čerpali mnohí ďalší spisovatelia. A hoci sa nezachovalo celé, dodnes je cenným zdrojom poznania najstaršej rímskej histórie.
Knihy XVII – XX sa zaoberajú udalosťami v rozmedzí rokov 260 – 219 pred Kr. Opisujú udalosti prvej púnskej vojny, boje na Sardínii a Korzike, vojny s predalpskými Galmi a Ligúrmi a vojenské výpravy v Ilýrii a Histrii.

Když se J. A. Komenský dostal ve svém Věcném pansofickém slovníku k pojmu historia, začal etymologií: „Slovo je odvozeno od historeo vidím, hledím. Vlastně je to tedy to, co člověk viděl na vlastní oči.“ Není však historie něčím, co už z definice minulo, a stěží tak může být dostupné smyslovému poznání? V období raného novověku byla taková maxima nejen myslitelná, nýbrž explicitně proklamovaná. Zdaleka přitom nešlo o pouhý básnický obrat. Jednalo se o celý soubor textových, epistemologických a grafických praxí, s jejichž pomocí se historiografie šestnáctého a sedmnáctého století profilovala jako modelový empirický postup produkce a reprezentace vědění. A třebaže dějepisectví Jednoty bratrské je zpravidla nahlíženo jako typický příklad konfesijně vyhraněné produkce, která rezignovala na základní historiografický imperativ psát o dějinách sine ira et studio a nekriticky hájila stranické zájmy společenství, v jehož službách stála, v kontextu empirické epistemologie a jejích centrálních kategorií se dostává do jiného světla.
