The CIA Book Club

For almost five decades after the Second World War, Europe was divided by the longest and most heavily guarded border on earth. The Iron Curtain, a near-impenetrable barrier of wire and wall, tank traps, minefields, watchtowers and men with dogs, stretched for 4,300 miles from the Arctic to the Black Sea. No physical combat would take place along this frontier: the risk of nuclear annihilation was too high for that. Instead, the conflict would be fought in the psychological sphere. No one understood this more clearly than George Minden, the head of a covert intelligence operation known as the 'CIA books programme', which aimed to win the Cold War with literature.
From its Manhattan headquarters, Minden's global CIA 'book club' would infiltrate millions of banned titles into the Eastern Bloc, written by a vast and eclectic list of authors, including Hannah Arendt and Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, George Orwell and Agatha Christie. Volumes were smuggled on trucks and aboard yachts, dropped from balloons, and hidden in the luggage of hundreds of thousands of individual travellers. Once inside Soviet bloc, each book would circulate secretly among dozens of like-minded readers, quietly turning them into dissidents. Latterly, underground print shops began to reproduce the books, too. By the late 1980s, illicit literature in Poland was so pervasive that the system of communist censorship broke down, and the Iron Curtain soon followed.

Listinné garance náboženských poměrů na šlechtických panstvích (1436 – 1620)
Svazek edičně zpřístupňuje listiny vydávané v letech 1436 až 1620 pro některá česká a moravská vrchnostenská města, jejichž vydavatelé se v nich snažili garantovat budoucí vývoj náboženských poměrů v dané lokalitě. V případě nejstarších dokumentů z 15. a počátku 16. století šlo většinou o listiny katolických vydavatelů (včetně zeměpánů Zikmunda Lucemburského a Albrechta Habsburského), kteří zaručovali svobodný výkon přijímání podobojí v lokalitách, které se přiklonily k utrakvismu. Naopak v průběhu 16. století mezi vydavateli zcela převládli utrakvističtí a později evangeličtí páni i rytíři, kteří se ve svých vrchnostenských městech nebo městečkách snažili zaručit budoucí výkon preferovaného vyznání. Od osmdesátých let 16. století se objevují rovněž listiny katolických pánů, kteří v zájmu záruky kontinuity katolictví předávali patronátní právo k farním svatyním ve svých městech či na celých panstvích nositelům protireformace (na Moravě olomouckému biskupu, v Čechách představeným jezuitských řádových domů). Právě v době stupňujícího se mezikonfesního napětí mezi léty 1580–1620 byly vydány dvě třetiny studovaných listin, z čehož je patrné, že se je oba tábory snažily využívat k upevnění svých pozic v obou korunních zemích. Svazek edičně zpřístupňuje 75 listin v podobě in extenso, doplněných záhlavním regestem a poznámkovým aparátem. Jeho součástí je úvodní studie, jejíž první část představuje celý soubor studovaných pramenů. Druhá část úvodního textu se je pokouší zasadit do kontextu diplomatické produkce šlechty na sklonku středověku a počátku novověku, věnuje se jejich dobovému uchovávání i samotnému dochování editovaných textů v dnešní době (originály, konfirmace, vidimusy, deskové vklady, neověřené opisy). Samozřejmou součástí úvodního pojednání bude představení edičních zásad. Součástí svazku jsou dále rejstříky (jmenný a místní) a seznam pramenů a literatury.

Vyplenění Říma vojsky ve službách císaře Karla V., k němuž došlo v květnu roku 1527 v rámci takzvaných italských válek, představuje jednu z nejbolestnějších ran, které Věčné město během své dlouhé historie utrpělo. Považovali ji za spravedlivý trest, který Bůh seslal na papeže a další vysoké představitele římskokatolické církve, nebo byli tím, co španělští, italští a němečtí vojáci ve službách císaře Karla V. spáchali, rovněž zděšeni? K první skupině patřil španělský humanista a císařský sekretář Alfonso de Valdés (1490–1532), muž, který ve svých spisech dokázal pružně reagovat na dynamický vývoj událostí dvacátých let 16. století a jehož dílo nabízí unikátní vhled do myšlení jednoho ze zastánců císařského univerzalismu. Ústřední součást předkládané knihy představuje Valdésův dialog nazvaný Rozprava o událostech, jež se odehrály v Římě, na jehož stránkách se jeho autor pokusil vysvětlit destrukci Říma z pohledu zastánce císařské politiky.
