1944 szentestéjén, a Varsó környéki harcok szünetében a IV. SS-páncéloshadtest katonái a jeles alkalom méltó megünneplésére készültek. Nagy várakozással tekintettek a legnémetebb ünnep elé, nem utolsósorban azért, hogy elkölthessék a legízletesebb vacsorát, amit a tábori konyha a háború ötödik évében prezentálni tudott. Ki is érdemelték. Az öt hónapig tartó, súlyos veszteségekkel járó, ádáz harcok után a hadtestparancsnokság és a hozzá tartozó két hadosztály - a 3. Totenkopf és az 5. Wiking SS-páncéloshadosztály - katonái már nagyon várták az ünnepeket, az otthonról kapott ajándékokat, s talán azt is, hogy megihassanak egy üveg snapszot vagy bort a bajtársakkal.
De másként alakultak a dolgok. Herbert Otto Gille SS-Obergruppenführer, a hadtestparancsnok este telefonhívást kapott: közölték vele, hogy a hadtest 35.000 katonájának már másnap meg kell kezdenie a berakodást a vasúti szerelvényekbe, melyek a viszonylag csendes visztulai frontról több száz kilométerre, a magyarországi hadszíntérre repítik őket. Az alakulatot Budapest felmentésével bízták meg. Kezdetét vette a IV. SS-páncéloshadtest történetének utolsó szakasza, amikor kulcsszerephez jutott a balvégzetű város három felmentési kísérletében. Gille és csapatai - akiknek a dolgot a saját felső vezetésük éppúgy nehezítette, mint a szovjet erők - a helyőrség felmentése érdekében leküzdhetetlennek tűnő akadályokat győztek le, de végső támadásukat az utolsó pillanatban lefújták, pedig csak néhány kilométerre jártak a céltól, melynek elérésére közel egy hónapja törekedtek. Miután a felmentési kísérlet kudarca megpecsételte a több százezer magyar és német sorsát, az alakulatnak egyetlen lehetősége maradt: védelembe vonulni és a lehető legtovább védelmezni a magyarországi olajmezőket.
