A komáromi születésű katonatiszt megjárta az orosz hadifogságot, ahonnan sikeresen megszökött. 1919 februárjában ellenforradalmárként tartóztatták le Budapesten, s a kommün végéig nem is bocsátották szabadon. Ezt követően volt különítményesvezér, az 1930-as évek elején ő inspirálta József Attila hírhedt, „A nemzeti szocializmus” kezdetű kéziratát, és úgy lett Gömbös Gyula miniszterelnök bennfentese, hogy közben az illegális kommunista pártot de facto vezető Madzsar József asztaltársaságának tagjai között is számontartották. Megfordult a kormánypártban, később a nyilasok soraiban tűnt fel, majd megalapította saját „nemzeti szocialista” pártját, amely a szélsőjobboldalról indulva néhány éven belül a legmarkánsabban baloldali legális politikai alakulattá lépett elő Magyarországon. Ki volt ez az intrikus hajlamú nyugalmazott huszárőrnagy, aki a második világháború tetőpontján a legmerészebb háborúellenes beszédeket tartotta a magyar parlamentben, és akiről később azt is rebesgették, hogy a „Horthy-rendszer legügyesebb és legveszedelmesebb különleges ügynökeként” működött?
