Zrzavý a Novotný neváhají provokovat a narušovat zaběhlé představy a berou si na mušku nejrůznější myšlenkové zkratky i kulturní stereotypy. Jejich eseje jsou víc než jen o biologii; jsou o našem chování a společnosti, ve které žijeme.
Chemie bez fobie
Naše schopnosti odhalit v každodenních produktech i sebemenší stopu toxických látek jsou od devadesátých let 20. století na takové úrovni, že nám nic škodlivého neunikne, i kdyby koncentrace této látky byla jen několika částic z miliardy. Zachytíme tak vše škodlivé ve chvíli, kdy to ještě žádnou škodu způsobit nemůže. Přesto ale náš život ovládá strach z chemických látek.
Bojíme se i neškodných věcí a raději kupujeme „alternativní“, „přírodní“, „organické“ produkty „bez chemie“ za přemrštěné ceny. Člověk přirozeně inklinuje k přírodě, protože se v ní cítíme dobře fyzicky i psychicky. Právě to ale někdy využívají marketingoví specialisté, kteří nám s nálepkou přírodních produktů prodávají zboží, které se od toho běžného zase tolik neliší. Vede to k tomu, že se produktů, které svoji „přírodnost“ nedeklarují, začneme bát. A odtud je už jen krůček k celkovému strachu z chemie a chemických produktů, rovněž zneužívaný ke komerčním účelům. Drahé výrobky, které kupujeme, nám přitom nenabídnou téměř nic, co by nám nemohl poskytnout blahodárný pobyt v přírodě – který je zdarma.
Kniha Jamese Kennedyho, britského popularizátora chemie, se věnuje dějinám fobie z chemie a přesvědčivě ukazuje, že naše obavy velmi častou plynou jen z nepochopení, nedostatku informací nebo neznalosti. Autor předkládá názory obou stran tohoto sporu a četba jeho knihy bude potěšením pro každého, kdo se zajímá o vědu. Její hlavní poselství je ale jasné: poučený člověk se nemá čeho bát.
Kniha je doplněna množstvím komentářů českých vědců, kteří zasvěceně aplikují její závěry i pro české či středoevropské prostředí a doplňují výklad o další zajímavá a někdy i překvapivá fakta.

Autor chce opísať gravitačné pôsobenie novým spôsobom, inak ako sa opisuje vo všeobecnej teórii relativity (VTR). Netvrdí, že sa VTR nezhoduje s pozorovaniami – to je správne, pretože sa zhoduje –, ale domnieva sa, že nie je dostatočne „zjednotená“, pretože neposkytuje jednotný opis gravitačného pôsobenia a šírenia sa svetla. Takto všeobecne povedané, je to pravda. Už Einstein sa pokúšal o zjednotenie VTR s klasickou elektrodynamikou, ktorá opisuje svetlo ako elektromagnetické vlnenie, a v súčasnosti sa považuje za najväčší otvorený problém fyziky zjednotenie VTR s kvantovou mechanikou, do ktorej patrí opis svetla ako prúdu fotónov. Mnohí si myslia, že toto zjednotenie by malo byť založené na nejakom novom fyzikálnom princípe, rovnako jednoduchom a názornom, ako je princíp ekvivalencie vo VTR. Teórii strún, ktorá je v súčasnosti najvážnejším kandidátom na jednotnú teóriu všetkých interakcií, taký princíp chýba.
