Stalag Luft lll was where Germany sent all its habitual Allied escapers, and the first British and Commonwealth POWs arrived there on 11 April 1942.The following year, on 29 October, what became known as The Wooden Horse Escape took place – the name deriving from the use of a gymnastic vaulting horse to cover the fact that a tunnel was being dug underneath. The escape was devised by Flight Lieutenant Eric Williams and Lieutenant Richard Michael Codner. Joined by Pilot Officer Oliver Philpot, all three men escaped and made it safely back to England. The escape inspired others and, five months later, on the evening of 24/25 March 1944, what became known as the Great Escape took place.The intention was to break out more than 200 British and Allied POWs, but a combination of tunnel collapses, a nearby Allied air raid and the discovery of the tunnel exit meant only 76 escapees made it out. When the Second World War broke out, Miss Daisy Baker of Kingsbury County School reached out to every former scholar serving their country. Two hundred Old Kingsburians replied, sending five hundred letters between them. Those letters survive – and they are the subject of this book. A práve doň čitateľov zavedie americký spisovateľ, publicista a propagátor vedy Edward Dolnick. Vďaka naším predkom sa nám zachoval na celom území dnešného Slovenska, Karpatských hôr a Panónskej nížiny. Ornament (vzor), používaný pri zdobení šiat a ich doplnkov, domov, výrobkov dennej potreby a zbraní, plnil súčasne viacero funkcií. Traduje sa, že hlavným účelom ornamentov (vzorov) používaných na šatách (šate) našich predkov nebolo len zdobenie odevu, ale bola to hlavne ich ochranná funkcia. Ochraňovali človeka pred všetkými možnými formami zla a negatívnych vplyvov. Umiestnenie týchto ornamentov (vzorov) nebolo náhodné, ale boli cielene na tých miestach odevu (šaty), kde sa odhaľovalo ľudské telo – kde vychádzalo spod šiat. Na hlave to bola vyšívaná šatka, čepiec, klobúk alebo vojenská prilba. Okolo krku to bol vyšívaný golier chrániaci hlavne krčnú tepnu. Na zápästiach to boli vyšívané rukávniky a manžety, alebo okolo pásu vyšívané a tkané opasky. Ďalej to boli kožúšky, mužské košele, ženské blúzky, ženské šaty a sukne, uteráky, obrusy, ručníky a rôzne iné doplnky. V týchto, najčastejšie vyšívaných ornamentoch (vzoroch), sú zakomponované staroslovenské (slovienske) symboly, ktoré mali ochrannú (oberežnú) funkciu. Okrem symbolov sú súčasťou ornamentu rôzne geometrické, rastlinné, zvieracie, predmetné a figurálne prvky, ktoré sa začali objavovať vo väčšej miere s príchodom kresťanstva a postupne prevažovali nad uvedenými staroslovenskými ochrannými symbolmi (vzormi), nazývanými neskoršie aj ako geometrické a merbné ornamenty alebo vzory. Prevahu rastlinných motívov pozorujeme hlavne v nížinách a v oblastiach so silným vplyvom kresťanstva. Naopak v horských kotlinách a dolinách Karpatských hôr sa podarilo uchovať v ornamentálnej tvorbe staroslovenské (slovienske) symboly a vzory. Ide napríklad o tieto oblasti: Rajecká dolina (Čičmany), Tatranská kotlina (Važec), Poľana (Detva, Hriňová), Horehronie, Novohrad, Karpatská Rus,… Nosiť správnu šatu znamenalo pre našich predkov nosiť na sebe účinnú ochranu tela overenú niekoľko tisícročnou tradíciou a kultúrou. Naša staroslovenská tradícia hovorí, že človek našej kultúry sa skladá z Tela, Duše, Ducha a má Svedomie. Tak ako naše Telo ochraňuje Dušu, tak naša šata (odev) chráni Telo. Šata v našej kultúre bola najčastejšie bielej farby, ušitá z ľanového alebo konopného plátna. Plátno je pritom textília tkaná tou najjednoduchšou plátennou väzbou, krížením osnovy a útku. Takto ušité šaty sa zdobili výšivkou – ornamentami (vzormi) a symbolmi červenej farby, ktoré chránili svojho majiteľa pred negatívnymi vonkajšími vplyvmi. Okrem toho podporovali rozvoj jeho duše a ducha, vyjadrovali jeho príslušnosť k rodu (rodové symboly) a jeho spoločenské zaradenie (duchovenstvo, kniežatá, vojenskí velitelia, bojovníci, poľnohospodári, remeselníci,…). Staroslovenská šata bola šitá tak, aby chránila bioenergetické pole človeka a koncentrovala jeho životnú energiu. Podkladom ľudového ornamentu (vzoru) novšej slovenskej kultúry sú isté základné útvary, ktoré v najrozmanitejších zoradeniach (kompozičných schémach) vytvárajú náš slovenský svojrázny ornament – svojráz, tak ako napríklad isté frazeologické útvary vytvárajú slovnú bohatosť našej krásnej slovenskej reči, alebo hudobné útvary vytvárajú hudobnú symfóniu. Slovenský ornament (vzor) je veľmi dôležitou súčasťou našej pôvodnej staroslovenskej aj novodobej slovenskej kultúry, tvorenia a bytia. Je pre nás v súčasnosti,
