The Winchester Constitutional Contribution 1070–1346
First among equals before the Norman Conquest, the ancient See of Winchester was soon overtaken by Canterbury, York and London following the defeat of the Anglo-Saxons at Hastings. Despite this, it retained its wealth and prestige through its geographical position and the bishop’s unrivalled proximity to kings at Westminster and archbishops at Lambeth – thanks to the diocese’s hold on the Thames’ south bank and its base at Southwark. Seeing politics as a sport ultimately generates a warped conception of democracy which overlooks the people and glorifies elites. This happens via two broad paths. A second danger arises from an excessive focus on the strategy of the game of politics. In the fiftieth anniversary edition of this now-classic book, Carlo Ginzburg uses the trial records to illustrate the religious and social conflicts of the society Menocchio lived in. For a common miller, Menocchio was surprisingly literate. In his trial testimony, he made references to more than a dozen books, including the Bible, Boccaccio's Decameron, Mandeville's Travels, and a "mysterious" book that may have been the Koran. And what he read he recast in terms familiar to him, as in his own version of the creation: "All was chaos, that is earth, air, water, and fire were mixed together; and of that bulk a mass formed—just as cheese is made out of milk—and worms appeared in it, and these were the angels."Ginzburg's massively influential book has been widely regarded as an early example of the analytic, case-oriented approach known as microhistory. In the preface, Ginzburg offers his own corollary to Menocchio's story as he considers the discrepancy between the intentions of the writer and what gets written. The Italian miller's story and Ginzburg's work continue to resonate with modern readers because they focus on how oral and written culture are inextricably linked. Menocchio's 500-year-old challenge to authority remains evocative and vital today.

How to understand a long-standing puzzle in political philosophy: the relationship between justice and legitimacyCan laws be unjust and yet remain, in some sense, morally legitimate? In this book, Jonathan Quong considers central issues in political philosophy through the lens of this single question. He explores and evaluates recent influential work on this topic and then proposes a novel approach of his own. The puzzle at the heart of his account is the phenomenon of legitimate injustice—laws and policies that are substantively unjust yet may be legitimately imposed by government officials. How can such laws be legitimate if, as some have argued, justice is the first virtue of social institution? uong analyzes the work of those who deny that injustice committed by states can be legitimate simply by virtue of its democratic or procedural pedigree; the Kantian account of legitimate institutions and justice; instrumental approaches to political legitimacy; and the recent wave of work in democratic theory focused on its egalitarian character. Arguing that these analyses do not offer an adequate solution to the puzzle and that there are compelling reasons to revise or reject them, Quong lays out his view and explains the implications for more general theories of political morality. He argues that we can explain legitimate injustice by appeal to distributive justice. Tak například křižácké výpravy měly být nejdůležitějším prvkem středověké válečné a náboženské doktríny pro boj s bezvěrci, ale vedly k zániku vrcholně kulturní a vznešené byzantské kultury. Dětská křižácká výprava měla být v očích křesťanů něčím výjimečným, ale stala se pogromem.
Gutenbergův objev knihtisku měl vést ke zlepší vzdělání lidí, ale skončil dnešním bulvárem.
Revoluce ve Francii měla vést k rovnoprávnosti a svržení monarchie, ale ve skutečnosti způsobila nástup jednoho z největších tyranů moderní historie – Napoleona Bonaparte.
Hitler miloval umění, ale stal se jedním z největších likvidátorů uměleckých děl v historii světa.

Události, které se odehrály v Černobylu 25. dubna 1986, znamenaly zvrat v dějinách. Atomová katastrofa nezměnila jen celosvětové vnímání jaderné energetiky a vědy, ale také náš postoj k ekologii.
