The Palestinians

Debt Trap Nation

Ballyshannon/Beal Atha Seanaidh
This new historical atlas explores the town of Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal from its origins to the present day. It traces the town’s development from a fording point and O’Donnell stronghold, through its nineteenth-century heyday as a thriving port and market town with international trading connections, into the twenty-first century. The volume includes large-format reproductions of historic maps, views and photographs from the late sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries, as well as specially created thematic maps. A gazetteer of over 680 sites and an accompanying essay provide a detailed topographical history of the town up to c. 1900.The Irish Historic Towns Atlas is a long-term research programme of the Royal Irish Academy. Since publication began in 1986, thirty-two atlases of Irish towns and cities, north and south, have been published. The atlases are produced following basic principles, making it possible to compare and contrast places with one another. Neurománia
A Neurománia „visszaadja a szót a tudósoknak, és hozzáférhetővé teszi a munkájukat azok korlátaival, óvatosságaival együtt, hogy ne legyünk kitéve a torzító diskurzusnak, amely ideológiai vagy kereskedelmi okokból eszköznek tekinti az agyról folyó kutatásokat”.
Manapság hajlamosak vagyunk arra, hogy szinte mindennek a magyarázatát az agyban keressük.
Boldogságunk, érzelmeink, függőségeink, félelmeink, hiedelmeink, teljesítményünk, egyéni vagy kollektív képességünk a változásra – ezek mind csak neuronjaink kölcsönhatásának eredménye.
De az agyról szóló egyre népszerűbb és egy szélesebb körű diskurzus – a neurománia – túl gyakran csak sommás vélemények, általánosítások, részigazságok, sőt hamis állítások árán valósul meg. Nem lehet minden problémát az egyénre és az agyára redukálni, és nem lehet az idegtudománynak és a kognitív tudományoknak olyan meglátásokat tulajdonítani, amilyeneket nem fogalmaznak meg.
A „torzító diskurzus”, vagyis az aggasztó mennyiségű dezinformáció javarészt a közösségi média áltudósainak, a megtévesztő reklámoknak, a gátlástalan politikusoknak és egy általános jelenségnek, a tudománnyal szemben egyre erősödő bizalmatlanságnak köszönhető. A szerző ezért komoly figyelmet szentel a hiedelmek, tévhitek tárgyalásának és szigorú cáfolatának. A Neuromániá-ban arról is sok szó esik, mi az, amit nem tudunk, hol húzódnak a határok, mit remélhetünk a jövő kutatásaitól. De a jelenlegi ismereteink alapján, hangsúlyozza a szerző, azért is fontos a lehető legtöbbet tudnunk az agyunkról, mert akkor jobban fogjuk érteni a saját viselkedésünket, reakcióinkat, érzelmeinket – saját magunkat.
