Onemocnění postihuje nejčastěji kůži, časem však může progredovat i do vnitřních tkání a orgánů. Přes poměrně viditelné kožní příznaky zůstává onemocnění často dlouho nediagnostikované nebo diagnostikované mylně. Většina případů se vyskytuje u osob starších 20 let a častěji se vyskytuje u mužů než u žen.
