Nevynechává přitom ani otázky tělesnosti, sexuality a genderu, anebo vztahu člověka a umělé inteligence.

Utopie

Utopie anglického humanisty Thomase Mora, vydaná poprvé latinsky roku 1516, dala jméno celému žánru zamyšlení nad ideálním uspořádáním lidské společnosti. More navazuje na základní komunitární principy starokřesťanského učení, inspiruje se antickou literaturou, zprávami o zámořských objevech i texty svého přítele Erasma Rotterdamského. Nevyhýbá se ironii a vyprávění o zvycích obyvatel ostrova Utopie (z řeckého ú-topos, ne-místo) spolu s úvahami o možnostech regulace lidské pýchy či o reformě trestního práva vkládá do úst nepříliš důvěryhodného námořníka Rafaela Hythlodaia.

Prejavujú nezištnosť a obetavosť, pestujú blízke emocionálne vzťahy. Múdre, súcitné a vtipné!

Upstream

New York Times bestselling author Dan Heath asks what happens when we take our thinking upstream and try to prevent problems before they happen. What happens when we take our thinking upstream and try to prevent problems before they happen? Most of us are pretty good at dealing with problems – we’re used to being resourceful and improvising solutions. But we also tend to focus on reacting rather than preventing, which costs us unnecessary time and money. Across business, politics, and society, bestselling author Dan Heath shows us that we have the capacity to solve some of our thorniest issues – we just need to start to think about the system rather than the symptoms. Drawing on hundreds of new interviews with unconventional problem solvers, Heath shows the huge gains to be made when we stop dealing with symptoms and start to deliver practical solutions.

An Atlas of Endangered Alphabets

A global exploration of the many writing systems that are on the verge of vanishing, and the stories and cultures they carry with them. If something is important, we write it down. Yet 85% of the world's writing systems are on the verge of vanishing - not granted official status, not taught in schools, discouraged and dismissed. When a culture is forced to abandon its traditional script, everything it has written for hundreds of years - sacred texts, poems, personal correspondence, legal documents, the collective experience, wisdom and identity of a people - is lost. This Atlas is about those writing systems, and the people who are trying to save them. From the ancient holy alphabets of the Middle East, now used only by tiny sects, to newly created African alphabets designed to keep cultural traditions alive in the twenty-first century: from a Sudanese script based on the ownership marks traditionally branded into camels, to a secret system used in one corner of China exclusively by women to record the songs and stories of their inner selves: this unique book profiles dozens of scripts and the cultures they encapsulate, offering glimpses of worlds unknown to us - and ways of saving them from vanishing entirely.

The Corporation in the Twenty-First Century

A radical reappraisal of the nature and activities of business - what it is for and how it works For generations, we have defined a corporation as a business run by a capitalist elite, that uses its accumulated wealth to own the means of production and exercise economic power. That is no longer the reality. In the twenty-first century, our most desired goods and services aren't stacked in warehouses or on container ships: they appear on your screen, fit in your pocket or occupy your head. But even as we consume more than ever before, big business faces a crisis of legitimacy. The pharmaceutical industry creates life-saving vaccines but has lost the trust of the public. The widening pay gap between executives and employees is destabilising our societies. Facebook and Google have more customers than any companies in history but are widely reviled. John Kay, one of the greatest economists of our time, describes how the pursuit of shareholder value has destroyed some of the leading companies of the twentieth century. Incisive and provocative, this book redefines successful commercial activity and leadership, the knowledge economy and what the future of the modern corporation might be.

How to Think Like a Poet

How did the greatest poets in history make the world anew? And what can we learn from the magic, the wisdom and the humour that is the gift of the greatest poets of our human civilization? From the genius of the Greeks and Romans to love and metaphysics of the Middle Ages, to the concrete wonder of New York and the Beat Poets of San Francisco, this is the ultimate guide to the greatest writers of the human age, and what their extraordinary lives can teach us about how to see the world. More than any other genre, poetry represents the art of thinking. Writing about the 17th-century English poet John Donne, T.S. Eliot summed up how vital thinking is to the whole poetic enterprise. 'A thought to Donne was an experience,' he wrote; 'it modified his sensibility.' Where most people experience a thought and quickly move on to the next, for the poet a thought is something that needs to be savoured, articulated and preserved. It's an emotional experience, not just an intellectual one – a sensation that builds up in the mind and body and has to be committed to the page. In showing how the great poets of human history lived and worked - and illuminating the gifts of the written word they left us - the poet and poetry teacher Dai George provides a readable and entertaining introduction to how to think like a poet, and how we can weave that thinking into our everyday lives. He addresses questions the great poets have grappled with: What is it to describe the world? How can we express love, grief, or friendship? And how can we rise above the misery of the world and see the beauty in the everyday? This book paints vivid portraits of a global assortment of great poets throughout history: from Sappho, Juvenal and LiXu, to William Shakespeare and John Donne, to Frank O Hara, Pablo Neruda and Sylvia Plath. George also seeks to re-examine the canon – which has been overwhelmingly Western, white and male – who have long been held up as pillars of the art, and bring to light major figures from other, no less important cultures and communities – including major poets from China, pre-colonial America and Japan. He also engages with the extraordinary boom in poetry on Instagram, Twitter and TikTok – all signs of what every poet knows – we need poetry in order to live better, more fulfilling lives. In each brief chapter, George brings to life these often prescient, always compelling poetical thinkers, showing how their way of writing about and understanding the world grew out of their own lives and times and how we can use their insights today.

Our Future is Biotech

Welcome to the biotech revolution In the last century, technology has transformed the human experience across the world. This has been super-charged by the arrival of the internet, smart phones, AI and machine learning, and created trillion-plus dollar companies and household names like Apple, Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Our Future is Biotech explains why biotech is next: because our biggest remaining challenges as a species concern biological systems. Biotech companies will solve our most intractable problems, from cancer, dementia, obesity and diabetes to elderly care, mental health conditions, and even clean power generation, agricultural production and environmental degradation. Biotech means that we can all live better, safer, healthier, wealthier, happier, and longer lives. The industry has already delivered "miracle cures" for several diseases, and there is more to come. But despite this, few people are aware of the phenomenal progress being made. Our Future is Biotech addresses this, explaining what biotech is, what is coming next, and how you might profit from it too. Tech has been the most important theme for human progress for the last century. Biotech is next.

Good Nature

A revolutionary, science-based look at the ways nature can improve our lives that will do for the natural world what Tim Spector's Food for Life did for food. Fifteen years ago, University of Oxford Professor Kathy Willis read a study that radically changed her view of our relationship to the natural world. The study proved that patients recovering in hospital from surgery improved three times faster when they looked out of their windows at trees. Professor Willis has since dedicated her research to proving this link between the amount of green space in our lives and our better health, mood, and longevity. For the first time ever, Good Nature brings together these recent scientific findings from the past 15 years. Outlining the tangible benefits to our health she and other scientists have discovered, it is full of surprising and practical ways that nature can enhance our lives, such as: did you know that cedar enhances cancer-fighting cells in our immune system? Touching wood makes us feel calmer (the woodier, the knot-ier, the better). Our gut develops healthier microbiome from being in nature. A book with applications to everything from which way we walk to work and choosing where our kids should go to school, Good Nature brings the laboratory to our lives – evoking the thrill of scientific discovery – and out into the natural world, making us see and experience it with new eyes.
