A Year of Last Things
With A Year of Last Things, acclaimed novelist Michael Ondaatje returns to poetry, looking back on a life of displacement and discovery
Born in Sri Lanka during the Second World War, Ondaatje was sent as a child to school in London, and later moved to Canada. While he has lived there since, these poems reflect the life of a writer, traveller and watcher of the world – describing himself as a 'mongrel', someone born out of diverse cultures.
Here, rediscovering the influence of every border crossed, he moves back and forth in time, from a childhood in Sri Lanka to Moliére’s chair during his last stage performance, from icons in Bulgarian churches to the Californian coast and loved Canadian rivers, merging memory with the present, looking back on a life of displacement and discovery, love and loss. Čtyři kvartety jsou básnickou meditací o bytí v čase, mnohoznačnou, rafinovaně vystavěnou kompozicí, která patří k vrcholům světové poezie. Martin Hilský (*1943) je přední český anglista a překladatel, profesor anglické literatury na FF UK. Je držitelem mnoha ocenění, mezi nimiž vyniká Cena Josefa Jungmanna, Státní cena za překladatelské dílo či Řád britského impéria. Vedle kompletního díla Williama Shakespeara přeložil a zasvěceným komentářem doprovodil řadu dalších angloamerických velikánů, namátkou D. H. Lawrence, J. Steinbecka, J. M. Syngea – či právě T. S. Eliota.
T. S. Eliot (1888–1965) je mnohými považován za největšího angloamerického básníka 20. století. Jeho básnické a kritické dílo je ztělesněním literárního modernismu, zároveň ovšem vychází z hluboce procítěné, promyšlené a výsostně reflektované literární tradice, sahající přes anglické metafyzické básníky či Dantovu poezii až k velkým starověkým textům. Roku 1948 získal Nobelovu cenu za literaturu.

Druhý svazek nového českého překladu vybraných Majakovského veršů nabídne čtenáři celkem sedm poem, které lze námětově označit jako veřejné: je to 150 000 000 z let 1919–1920; IV. internacionála a Pátá internacionála, obě publikovány v roce 1922; poema Vladimir Iljič Lenin z roku 1924, napsaná v přímé reakci na Leninovu smrt v témž roce; Létající proletář datovaný rokem 1925; Správně! (1927); a konečně poema Z plna hrdla, která vyšla na přelomu let 1929–1930, tedy těsně před Majakovského smrtí, a je považována za nedokončenou. Ačkoliv všechny vznikly po roce 1917 a nelze popřít jejich politickou angažovanost v zájmu bolševické revoluce, je nezpochybnitelné, že i tyto porevoluční Majakovského verše se vyznačují velkou obrazností, kreativitou a často i hravostí.

Pre Praha, nominanta najvýznamnejších básnických ocenení v Slovinsku (Veronikina cena, Jenkova cena) a laureáta ceny Exil Lyrikpreis (Viedeň 2018), resp. pre jeho písanie je charakteristická elipsa, diverzita výrazu a hravosť, tvorba novotvarov a inovatívnych postupov, ale aj zraňujúca, pre niekoho možno provokatívna otvorenosť deteritorializovaného subjektu, ktorý sa vzpiera disciplinujúcim nárokom väčšinového (heteronormatívneho či antropocentrického) diskurzu a preskúmava hranice možného.
Knihu dopĺňa fundovaný doslov prekladateľky a vydavateľky diela, ktorá v ňom o. i. upozorňuje aj na všestranné kontexty Prahovho básnického vystúpenia doma i v zahraničí – a teda aj na väčšinovo konzervatívnom Slovensku.
