Blood Root

Reflecting on a dual upbringing in two villages, Bobcaygeon (Canada/Turtle Island) and Badela (Sierra Leone), Jessica Hiemstra’s new collection of poems delves into her relationship with home. In Blood Root, she interrogates questions of legacy, land, belonging, and the breathtaking intimacy of death. One moment tender, the next moment dark, hard, and raw, Blood Root blends diary entries, drawings, and lyricism to hold up a polished mirror to colonialism and its echoing impact. Considering beauty and horror in equal reverence “so I’m not human once removed,” Hiemstra cuts through pretence, bearing witness to humans as they confront and connect to one another and the larger world.

Cestou střídá verše tíživější i lehčí, hravější i strohé, časové i nečasové. Cyničtější pozorování se v nich prostupují s básnickými meditacemi nad tím, proč vlastně psát, když už všechno bylo napsáno – a jaký má lidské snažení vůbec smysl.

Life expectancy begins to fall

Is your retirement plan dying in the climate wars? Are you getting on with things in the meantime? In Life expectancy begins to fall, Tom Sastry asks how we normalise an apocalypse, taking us on a tour of bad coping strategies, unwelcome epiphanies, and striking reminders of what we still have.Part-elegy and part-satire, these poems do not show you what to do in a crisis, nor do they promote the cliches of positive thinking that tell you how to be a good worker, an effective activist or a spiritual person. Instead, quietly and persuasively, Sastry develops a subtle meditation on hope. The poetry shows us as we mostly are, lost in the enormity of it all and busy with other things. Explore a world where ‘pessimism is complicated by love’ and optimism is found hiding in moments where ‘nothing happens, in the most lavish way’.

Minx

‘Like amber, these poems capture moments of time, place and feeling'' Lemn Sissay, author of My Name is Why''An assured debut . . . It''s not just the Dickensian narrative that''s gripping , but the way it brings different forms to bear on its material'' Guardian''Don’t worry, I’m here in the house where every room has a name, but children’s names are often forgotten.''Uplifting and heart-breaking, this lyrical evocation of an Anglo-Romani childhood marks the arrival of a vital new voice.MINX reveals the vibrant but precarious world of a multi-racial Romani family: a world of grandfathers brewing moonshine in marrows, basement reggae parties, and a mother struggling to support her two daughters on the proceeds of her shadowy profession. Their powerful bond helps the sisters survive when they’re taken into care, in a children’s home that forcibly separates them. With a verve and playfulness that belies their pain, these poems explore what it means to belong. Through daring experiments with form and narrative, MINX captures how it feels to grow up between a culture whose traditional ways are being lost and a wider society that despises them.''Moving, magical, mesmerising, these poems stay with you long after the pages are closed’ Jackie Kay, author of Fiere

The Sky Is Our Song

An ancient Greek guide to the heavens, translated in a new accessible modern English edition.   A poetic guide to the heavens, the Phaenomena of Aratus—dating from around 270 BCE—was widely known across the ancient world, second only in fame to the works of Homer. Beginning with an invocation to Zeus, the poem describes the constellations of the northern and southern skies, the celestial sphere, and weather signs. Aratus’s vivid work offered a complete handbook of astronomy, constellations, and weather, and this treatise on the night sky was later translated or adapted by luminaries including Cicero, Virgil, and Ovid. The Phaenomena remained popular throughout the Renaissance and had more than sixty printed editions by the early seventeenth century, but its fame has faded in the modern world.   With this edition, renowned translator and amateur astronomer Stanley Lombardo renders Aratus’s poem in reader-friendly vernacular English verse. Complete with endnotes, an accessible introduction, and astronomically accurate illustrations, The Sky Is Our Song brings this master poet’s celebration of the sky to a twenty-first-century audience, inviting new readers to follow Aratus on a visual journey through star signs, moon phases, weather phenomena, and all wonders of the heavens.

Pod grafiku

Knižka Pod grafiku vychádza ako reedícia knižnej bibliofílie, ktorú v roku 1993 vydal Karel Kryl spolu s výtvarníkom Igorom Cvachom, pod hlavičkou vydavateľstva Imagine v Źiline. Vyšla v náklade iba 100 číslovaných výtlačkov. Ku svojej päťdesiatke ju Karel Kryl pripravil sebe a svojim priateľom ako darček. V knižke vydal deväť svojich básní, doplnených krásnymi ilustráciami – grafikami, slovenského maliara a grafika Igora Cvacha.

True to One Another

Best known today for his critical pronouncements, Matthew Arnold has still not received his due as a wonderfully moving poet, and only one of his poems, ‘Dover Beach’, is remembered by most – although it’s a strong candidate for the nation’s favourite. John Greening’s personal selection invites us to imagine ‘Matt’, as he was known, without the sideburns and the scowl. Readers may be surprised to learn just how ahead of his time Arnold was in his tastes and values, as well as in his early use of free verse.Along with a helpful introduction and thorough notes, this collection brings together love poems, retellings of myths and tributes, along with some of Arnold’s better-known works, ‘Dover Beach’, ‘Sohrab and Rustum’, a heart-wrenching story of a doomed father–son relationship, the glorious elegiac ‘The Scholar-Gipsy’ and its sequel, ‘Thyrsis’, about the loss of his dearest friend, and there’s even a genuinely animated version of the Little Mermaid story. This edition aims to restore Arnold’s name as one of the finest poets of the Victorian era.

Liar, Liar, Lick, Spit

Fibs, porkies, little white lies, absolute whoppers and criminal evasions: the ways we can deceive each other are legion.Liar, Liar, Lick, Spit, the new collection by Otepoti poet and writer Emma Neale, is fascinated by our doubleness. Prompted by the rich implications in a line from Joseph Brodsky — ‘The real history of consciousness starts with one’s first lie’ — it combines a personal memoir of childhood lies with an exploration of wider social deceptions. From the unwitting tricks our minds play, to the mischievous pinch of literary pastiche; from the corruptions of imperialism or abuse, to the dreams and stories we weave for our own survival, these poems catalogue scenes that seem to suggest our species could be named for its subterfuge as much as for its wisdom. Yet at the core of the collection are also some tenets to hold to: deep bonds of love; the renewal children offer; a hunger for social justice; and the sharp reality that nature presents us with, if we are willing to look.

Autopsy (of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob)

Writer, director, and actor Avan Jogia delivers a bright and acidic poetry collection on fame, rage, love, and sadness. A biting postmortem of the modern age, for fans of Lana Del Rey and Atticus.Avan Jogia grew up as a teen idol. He stumbled into the spotlight during the birth of the internet, the early days of Instagram and Twitter, before everyone online was a star. He spent his time in that spotlight writing, observing the cult of celebrity, the hilarity, the absurdity, and sometimes sinister side of being idolized before you’ve even had the chance to decide for yourself who you are. Now, in his most revealing and honest work to date, he has assembled a book of poems as an act of self-dissection. Part boozy lovesick rage and part personal reflection on the nature of fame, Autopsy (of an Ex-Teen Heartthrob) is a sharp, tantalizing collection of poems examining Avan’s relationship with ego, idolatry, love as an act of worship, rage as an act of prayer, and sadness as confession. Through vivid imagery (and sometimes startling honesty) Avan cuts himself open and observes the false gods he has worshipped, the ways he has sinned, and exhumes a version of himself that looks like someone we all know: a person searching for the means to cure pain, mend the wounds of insecurity, and satiate cravings for love.

Selected Poems

Jack Underwood’s selection from Maurice Riordan’s work over the last forty years allows us to rediscover a poet whose musicality, wit and emotional acuity rank him as a leading poet of his and any generation.Responding to the imaginative range of Riordan’s preoccupations, Underwood creates a dynamic arrangement for poems rooted in particularities of time and place, yet enduring in their audacious inventions and pungent ironies. They are compelling in their immediacy, whether they evoke a childhood in rural Co. Cork, describe a remote community that has taken to the treetops to sing, or itemise the novelties and effronteries of aging. Riordan’s work appears here as it demands to be read: at once contemporary and timeless, vibrant with the anxieties and pleasures of being alive in the here and now.

When It Rained for a Million Years

''Farley''s strength, throughout his career, is the delicacy of his poems'' music, their soft lighting and good humour, and this book is no exception'' – Poetry Book Society BulletinA family cohabits with a horse; three riots are tucked up safely in their beds; a tumbleweed takes up a career in comedy; the giant flag crossing a football crowd has a strange effect on those underneath; a rampaging fifty-foot poem brings terror to a city . . . As always in Paul Farley’s work, the quotidian and the cosmic are braided together in surprising, funny, or disconcerting ways. And as always, his poems inhabit and explore intermediate, uncertain spaces; a Farley poem may be filled with recognisable objects and events, but is always alert to wider resonances. When It Rained for a Million Years represents a new stage of development in the poet’s work, while exemplifying his unwavering faith in the music and shape of language, and in the power of metaphorical transformation in the various ways elegy, monologue and the pastoral navigate and intersect with our anxious, brittle age.''A gift for making the mundane seem magical'' – Observer
