A Little History of Poetry

A vital guide to poetry from ancient times to the present Poetry is language made special, so that it will be remembered and valued. It does not always work - over the centuries countless thousands of poems have been forgotten. This Little History is about some that have not. John Carey tells the stories behind the world's greatest poems, from the oldest surviving one written nearly 4,000 years ago to those being written today. Carey looks at poets whose works shape our view of the world - such as Shakespeare, Whitman and Yeats - and more recent poets like Sylvia Plath, Seamus Heaney, and Marianne Moore who have started to question what makes a poem 'great' in the first place. Little Histories - Inspiring Guides for Curious Minds

Maľby do knihy vytvoril Martin Kellenberger.

Nádej je tá vec s perím / Hope Is the Thing With Feathers

Tento výber je reedíciou knihy Pre krásu umrela som (2017), iba názov sme mu dali nový. Obsahuje tiež to najpodstatnejšie z korešpondencie E. Dickinsonovej s literátom T. W. Higginsonom.

Selected Poems

Recipient of the Windham Campbell Prize for Poetry 2024Jen Hadfield is increasingly recognized as one of the singular poetic voices of our time, admired for the sheer vitality of her style and for her devotion to the natural world. Selected Poems offers a welcome retrospective, charting her development from the youthful wanderlust of Almanacs, through the incantatory praise songs of Nigh-No-Place for which she became the youngest ever winner of the T.S. Eliot Prize. Hadfield’s poetics are rooted in a panpsychist kinship with the non-human – a keen sensitivity to the consciousness that surrounds us, as she coaxes into language the essence of each thing. Nowhere is this more evident than in her rapt dialogue with the Shetland archipelago, translating its wild and abundant beauty, its idiosyncrasies and mythologies. ‘Home’, she writes, ‘is about using poetry to fashion myself a bivouac in the here and now, against the continual losses of the present tense’. Gathering poems from across the poet’s four collections alongside previously unpublished material, Selected Poems is a generous offering from one of our foremost poets of the natural world.

Bathing on the Roof

Bathing on the Roof reclaims the Biblical Bathsheba as an everywoman of the ages, creating a collage of female experience in all its sensual complexity. Whether finding herself living on the streets, arriving in the Garden of Eden, giving birth, or shopping in Beverly Hills, Bathsheba negotiates the edgy boundaries of her relationships with men while navigating the confines of her body. Act-of-God-turned-celebrity diva, Flood likes to make an impression. She wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, makes a Severn Bridge of herself, parties with lightning, pouts for the paparazzi and drowns far more than she means to. Explored through the lens of the media and fame, these poems imagine how Mother Nature might respond to humanity's interference, were she as flawed and determined as humanity itself.

Love is a Dangerous Word

For three decades, the legacy of writer, editor, performer, and activist Essex Hemphill has been lovingly sustained through xeroxed copies of his few published works. They are as potent now as they were in the 1980s. With tenderness and rage, Hemphill's poems unflinchingly explore the complex, overlapping identities of sexuality, gender, and race, the American political landscape, and his own experiences as a black gay man during the HIV/AIDS crisis. Edited by John Keene and Robert F. Reid-Pharr, Love is a Dangerous Word contains selections from Hemphill's only published full-length collection, Ceremonies—named one of the 25 most influential works of postwar queer literature by the New York Times—alongside rarely seen poems from magazines and chapbooks. It serves as both an introduction to Hemphill’s poetic prowess and a treasure trove for those who have long awaited his return to the literary spotlight.

Applause for a Cloud

Sayumi Kamakura’s Applause for a Cloud uses the haiku form to attend to everyday life with a cosmological acuteness, invoking wonder on macro and micro scales.Sayumi Kamakura juxtaposes a surreal dailiness with a cosmological acuteness, invoking wonder on macro and micro scales. The paradoxical frictions in her work resolve into moments of lucidity just as often as they perplex. Although she writes in the haiku tradition, her poems detour from the conventional parameters for haiku, such as syllabic restrictions and a fixed seasonal reference. Her flexible approach to the long-standing form allows her to explore new emotional frequencies across a range of subject matter. The book’s four sections—everyday life in Japan, experiences in Morocco and Italy, her husband’s cancer diagnosis, and reflections on the pandemic—reveal the preoccupations of a poet invested in rendering her experiences with a mix of traditional and contemporary motifs alongside a subtle wit. The natural world is always close at hand, yet Kamakura does not merely depict phenomena. She creates moments of stillness that usher the reader into her inner world.

Francia flört

E különleges megjelenésű könyv két nagy fejezete - a Ketten és a címadó Francia flört - a mindennapok fennköltséggel átitatott, feledhetetlenné váló perceit, a szerelem-szeretet-szövetség fogalomhármasával meghatározható párkapcsolatok vívódásaival átszőve állítja elénk.

Nepotrebuje ekvibrilistiku ťažko uchopiteľných metafor, aby predostrela čitateľovi to, čo cíti a vníma. A vníma veľmi pozorne, až mikroskopicky. Preto v jej básnickej tvorbe nenájdeme sentiment spomienok, hoci pocit straty v nej pretrváva. Kuglerová však nestráca ani vieru ani nádej. Poďme sa teda pozrieť do jej veršov, či v nej nájdeme Stratený malý svet, odviaty rokmi.

Pretenders

In Pretenders, her third book of poetry, Kate Potts asks: what is it like, as a daily, lived experience, to feel like a fraud or a fake? And what can ‘the imposter phenomenon’ – a sense that our true abilities and achievements, and other core aspects of our identities, are unreal, undeserved or mistakenly bestowed – tell us about who we are and how we relate to one anothe? hrough lively and vivid poetic monologues drawn from original interview material, and through original poetry, Pretenders begins to consider individual feelings and experiences of fraudulence, pretence and persona in a wider social and historical context. The varied, hesitant, questing voices build to create a bold and innovative chorus. Pretenders shines a light on our value systems and hierarchies, interrogating notions of ‘realness’, self-assurance, and the self. Kate Potts' Whichever Music was a Poetry Book Society Pamphlet Choice in 2008 and shortlisted for a Michael Marks Award. Her first book-length collection, Pure Hustle, was published by Bloodaxe in 2011, and followed by Feral, a Poetry Book Society Recommendation.

First Rain in Paradise

First Rain in Paradise is a book about falling. Gwyneth Lewis?s highly inventive poems trace an interior landscape carved out by the trauma of childhood emotional abuse through subsequent chronic ill health and towards a hard-won resurrection. These accounts of living in and emerging from the dark wrestle with the angel of language. Suffering does not preclude humour and may, in fact, require it, in poems written from the shadows but committed to the light. This work refuses to keep pain a secret. Shame is a lurking presence. Gwyneth Lewis has won wide acclaim for her versatile and varied writing across genres, most notably in her award-winning poetry in both English and Welsh. This book shows a deepening of her technical, imaginative and intellectual resources which are challenged and exercised to the full. The poems map uneasy terrains with realism and ? most importantly ? with joy.

The Gallery of Upside Down Women

Arundhathi Subramaniam’s poems map a wobbling world, trying to find its axis in a season of change. Fabrics tear, lands splinter, stances harden, loved ones die, names dissolve. But wandering through these pages are some extraordinary women – women who vault nimbly over borders, walk naked, walk aslant, and sometimes upside down. Leaping from the past into a global present, these exuberant voices offer tips on how to retain one’s spine through life’s giddiest rollercoaster rides. Blurring the divide between the mundane and the magical, the historical and the imaginary, they point to a new world that might lie within the folds of the old. A world that requires a new set of skills: how to find the right nicknames, how to ‘gatecrash into the present’, how to ‘go skinny-dipping in the self’. These are songs of bewilderment, insight and startling freedom. Arundhathi Subramaniam has published five collections in India and three books with Bloodaxe in the UK including When God Is a Traveller (2014), which was shortlisted for the T.S. Eliot Prize, and Love Without a Story (2020). Her earlier work is available in Where I Live: New & Selected Poems (2009). She has published other books on Buddhism and spiritual figures.

Prípravná čiara 57/ Preparation Line 57

Milčákov bilingválne, v reedícii publikovaný básnický text invenčne tematizuje tenziu medzi bolestne zakúšanými aspektmi skutočnosti a fikciou. Deficity skutočnosti vo vedomí autorovho básnického subjektu kompenzuje istá sebazáchovnosť a idealita fikcie, v reflexii čitateľa však zostáva znepokojujúci, obnažený existenčný „osteň“, tŕň bytia, bolesť zo straty všetkého, o čo človek v živote nakoniec prichádza.
