Following the loss of his twin sister, J. T. Welsch found himself drawn to the stories of poets who took their own lives. In The poetry of suicide, he interweaves these stories with the long history of suicide in his own family, searching for a new way of understanding these difficult deaths.
Beginning with Hamlet’s ‘To be or not to be?’, he delves into the work of Sylvia Plath, Marina Tsvetaeva and others, asking what it can teach us about suicide’s messy reality. Arriving Barefooted
In this bilingual collection, Arriving Barefooted—Two Rough Journeys/Glanio’n Droednoeth—Dwy Daith Arw, Gwen Williams traces the journey of the Welsh settlers in Patagonia and a journey in their footsteps. The first settlers arrived at Bahia Nueva in an old tea schooner, The Mimosa, in 1865. They had few farming or engineering skills and met with immediate hardship, sleeping in caves, shooting birds for food — metaphorically barefooted. But they were escaping oppression in their homeland, much like many modern-day migrants, and the determination to preserve their language and culture drove them on. In 2015, the 150th anniversary of the establishment of Y Wladfa, the poet travelled to Patagonia, welcomed by the descendants of the settlers. She carried a sketchbook and journal, discovering that her modern group of Welsh travellers were much less stoical than those first settlers, despite, or perhaps, because of modern advantages. The bilingual poems — they had to be in Welsh as well as English and would have been in Spanish too if Williams could have managed it — convey the essence of Chubut, its characters and rugged nature. Ranging from a Celtic festival on the banks of Afon Fawr to the noisy visitors showing off, Gogs and Hwntws (North and South Walians) competing to impress with their singing, these poems, by turns moving and filled with wit and warmth, immerse us in a unique place and culture. And along the way we might even meet the shy Patagonian Killer Bunny.
August, September, October
August, September, October is a deep, vulnerable meditation on fatherhood, time passing, and survival in a world reshaped by crisis. In two long, diaristic poems and a constellation of lyrical reflections that accrue into a day book of sorts, this collection traces the daily experiences of a poet—someone very much, though not exactly, like Craig Morgan Teicher—through the emotional and existential terrain of caregiving during the COVID-19 lockdown. In the title poem, “August September October,” the speaker tends to his medically fragile son during a harrowing stretch of illness and hospitalization while pondering the deathbed book of Irish poet Ciaran Carson. The second extended poem, "Midsummer Days,” takes off from Bernadette Mayer’s classic Midwinter Day, following the speaker as he fails to write a memoir and climbs his way back to poetry and toward faith in a world overwhelmed by upheaval. Surrounding these central poems are shorter poems that meditate on grim games, the music of Sonny Rollins, memories of being a young writer, the tyranny of TV screens, and the insane politics of our time. August, September, October offers a profoundly human snapshot of a family navigating disability, grief, and fleeting hope, all while trying to keep the imagination alive in an age of catastrophe.
Pomona's Orchard
Pomona’s Orchard, Adrian Blamires’ third collection, is dedicated to the arts of peace. Its tutelary spirits include Caliban tending to the dying Prospero, a great-aunt rescuing cats and dogs in the Blitz, the enlightened schoolmaster to an orphaned John Keats, and Pomona, Roman goddess of fruitful propagation, as the genius loci of a Herefordshire orchard. Miracles of love and healing are conjured in the face of violence and rapacity. Lament and dissent are sounded, alongside poems of witty, sensual profusion. The collection closes with a Tudor-themed sequence which presents pressing encounters – highly politicized, highly eroticized – between the Virgin Queen and her subjects. Drawing on Elizabethan lyric, symbolism, realia and innuendo, the poet offers a tragicomic vision of queen and country, a resonant blend of history and myth.
