Born into a prominent New York family (she was Edith Wharton's niece), Farrand designed lavish gardens for the leaders of society, including the Harknesses, the Rockefellers, and the Blisses. Ultimately, her portfolio extended to college and university campuses, including Princeton, Yale, and the University of Chicago, and public gardens, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden and the Rose Garden at the New York Botanical Garden among them. Her best-known design is the landscape at Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C., originally a private residence with extensive grounds and now a research center for Harvard University surrounded by a naturalistic park restored and maintained by the National Park Service. Deeply influenced by the English garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, Farrand was known for broad expanses of lawn with deep swaths of borders planted in a subtle palette of foliage and flowers. In her public work, she adapted this design strategy to create paths and plantings that define the character of the space and the hecirculation through it. Zborník je zostavený z príspevkov, ktoré odzneli na vedeckom kolokviu konanom pri príležitosti ukončenia rozsiahleho pamiatkového výskumu Kostola sv. Mikuláša v roku 2019. Architektonicko-historický, reštaurátorský a archeologický výskum sa zameral najmä na identifikáciu najstarších vývojových fáz kostola, listinne doloženého v roku 1262 a v staršej literatúre datovaného do roku 1221. V prvej etape výskumu bola v presbytériu objavená jedinečná celoplošná fresková výzdoba, dnes už zreštaurovaná. Objavené boli tiež zamurované románske okná nad emporou a vo východnej stene bočnej lode, čo potvrdilo predpoklad, že celé trojlodie bolo vystavané v románskom období. Archeológovia zasa datujú najstaršie nivelety interiérových podláh a prvý horizont pochovávania na cintoríne do obdobia 10. - 11. storočia. Prekvapujúce nové poznatky vypovedajúce o dôležitosti regionálneho centra a naznačujúce dávnu tradíciu sakrálneho miesta budú zaiste vážnym podnetom pre ďalšie odborné diskusie a interpretácie. Výskum z iniciatívy vlastníka Rímskokatolíckej cirkvi, Farnosť Bratislava - Podunajské Biskupice podporilo Ministerstvo kultúry Slovenskej republiky a Fakulta architektúry a dizajnu STU v Bratislave.

Práce je koncipována na průsečíku dějin technického vzdělání (dějiny vysokého technického a uměleckého školství), dějin umění a de facto sociologicko-prosopografického přístupu (kolektivní biografie) k dějinám konstituování společenských elit a dějinám hospodářství a stavebního podnikání v modernizačním procesu 19. století. Za disertační práci, která byla výchozím materiálem pro tuto knihu, získal autor Cenu Josefa Hlávky, která je každoročně udělována studentům vysokých škol za výjimečné schopnosti a tvůrčí myšlení ve svém oboru.
