Skyscraper
Chicago's beautiful Reliance Building, sixteen storeys tall, was designed in 1890 by John Root and completed in 1895 by Charles B. Atwood. In its construction - metal frame, large areas of plate glass, fire-proof brick and terracotta cladding - it pioneers all the key elements of twentieth-century high-rise architecture, and many of the tenets of Modernism.
Cruickshank reflects on the extraordinary architectural, artistic and engineering world of the 1890s and its great figures such as Daniel H. Burnham, Louis Sullivan and William Le Baron Jenney. Design Solutions for Urban Densification
The world’s metropolises are home to steadily growing populations. Densification measures are one solution to the problems of urbanization, creating inner-city living space where there was none before. The smallest of gaps between buildings is utilized, perimeter block developments are completed, courtyards filled in, houses heightened and smaller structures replaced with larger ones.
This process of densification preserves existing and naturally developed quarters and infrastructure, while protecting against urban sprawl and the development of soulless quarters full of new builds. In some cases, a self-contained element that clearly sets itself apart from the existing built environment is most suitable; in others, the best solution is the re-interpretation and development of the existing context. Jindřich Halabala, the main architect of UP závody as of 1930, greatly influenced the formation of the production program of the company. He contributed to the development of the products and to the advertising and sales strategies. His views on housing and furniture quality, which should be elegant in terms of shape, perfectly rendered, highly functional, storable and variable while at the same time accessible to the widest possible layer of the population, have remained inspirational and a timeless legacy.
The book Jindřich Halabala and UP závody Brno in GRADA publishing house is being released fifteen years after the first edition, prepared upon the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Brno architect, designer and theoretician Jindřich Halabala; it received an award in the Gloria Musaealis competition in 2004. This richly illustrated book is dedicated to one of the most interesting figures in furniture production of the between the wars period. It consists of the first comprehensive evaluation of his work and the activities of Spojené UP závody in Brno in the period of the 1920s.
The company ranked at the time among the largest and most progressive furniture factories in Czechoslovakia and the products bearing the UP trademark became a synonym for quality and good taste.

Jindřich Halabala, od roku 1930 hlavní architekt Spojených UP závodů, měl zásadní vliv na formování výrobního programu společnosti, podílel se na vývoji výrobků, na reklamní i prodejní strategii. Jeho představa o kvalitě bydlení a nábytku, který má být tvarově elegantní, dokonale zpracovaný, bezchybně funkční, skladebný a variabilní, a přitom dostupný nejširším vrstvám obyvatelstva, zůstává inspirujícím a nadčasovým odkazem.
Druhé, rozšířené vydání publikace vychází po patnácti letech od vydání prvního, připraveného ke 100. výročí narození brněnského architekta, designéra a teoretika. Bohatě ilustrovaná publikace, oceněná v roce 2004 v soutěži Gloria musealis, je věnována jedné z nejzajímavějších osobností nábytkové tvorby meziválečného období a přináší první souhrnné zhodnocení jeho díla a činnosti Spojených UP závodů v Brně v období třicátých let 20. století.
V této době patřil podnik k největším a nejprogresivnějším nábytkovým továrnám v tehdejším Československu a výrobky nesoucí značku UP byly synonymem kvality a dobrého vkusu.

Brutalism
Brutalist architecture is ever-present in the British urban landscape, from car parks and bus garages to schools, universities and cultural centres, from the small college campus to vast residential mega-structures. Taken from the French phrase 'beton brut', meaning raw concrete, the name brutalism identified an emerging style of angular and sculptural form and rough, exposed industrial materials.
