Victor Horta
Victor Horta (1861–1947) is well known as the creator of Art Nouveau architecture. Following the design of the Hôtel Tassel, Brussels, in 1893, Horta produced more than 40 buildings during the following decade. This new book discusses the many influences on his designs, and his legacy. Detailed descriptions of 19 projects, including Edicule Lambeaux, Hôtel Autrique, Hôtel Max Hallet and the Brugmann Hospital, are illustrated with Horta’s original drawings and specially commissioned photographs by award-winning architectural photographer Alastair Carew-Cox. Included in this book are extensive photographs of Hôtel Solvay, one of Horta’s most important works; access to photographers had been denied for 20 years, but special access was granted to Alastair Carew-Cox in the summer of 2016 in recognition of his and Professor David Dernie’s significant contribution to the study of Horta.
Victor Horta: The Architect of Art Nouveau has been prepared in close collaboration with the Horta Museum, Brussels, ensuring that it is both accurate and up to date. The Spirit of the Bauhaus
‘Architects, sculptors, painters, we all must return to the crafts!’ declared the architect Walter Gropius in his Bauhaus manifesto. Founded as an art school in 1919 and forced to close in 1933 by the Nazis, the Bauhaus established itself as a major influence on 20th-century art and design that continues to this day.
The Bauhaus opened in Weimar, the progressive heart of Germany’s postwar republic. Under its first director, Walter Gropius, students were taught by some of the most celebrated artists of the time, including Paul Klee, Lyonel Feininger and Wassily Kandinsky. The school moved to Dessau in 1922, under its radical new director Hannes Meyer, and to Berlin in 1932 under architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. In 1933 the Gestapo forced the Bauhaus to close for the last time.
This volume uncovers the sources of inspiration that brought the Bauhaus into existence, from medieval cathedrals of Europe and Hokusai prints to William Morris and Arts and Crafts. Kostel Panny Marie na Pražském hradě
Kostel Panny Marie na Pražském hradě patřil k nejhledanějším památkám Čech již od druhé poloviny 19. století. Do bouřlivé názorové výměny nad jeho polohou a významem se postupně zapojili snad všichni přední znalci raného středověku. Mariánský svatostánek totiž naposledy zmiňuje tzv. Dalimilova kronika, jejíž vznik bývá zpravidla kladen nedlouho za rok 1300. O něco později kostel zanikl a jeho poloha upadla v zapomnění. Objevit se jej podařilo až výzkumem, který roku 1950 vedl Ivan Borkovský. Nevelký objekt zakončený apsidou o rozměrech zhruba 7,5 × 6 m byl však natolik poničen, že se jeho původní podoba i stavební vývoj vzpírají jednoznačné interpretaci. Osmička archeologů, historiků, lingvistů, religionistů a uměleckých historiků (Iva Adámková, Nora Berend, Jiří Dynda, Jan Frolík, Jana Maříková-Kubková, Dalibor Prix, Ivo Štefan a Martin Wihoda) se nyní zamýšlí nad možnostmi a mezemi výkladu a pokouší se provázat Borkovského objev s christianizací Čechů.

Vybudovali jsme / Wir haben gebaut
V Ústí nad Labem se ve dvacátých a třicátých letech 20. století odehrál jeden z nejpozoruhodnějších příběhů československé meziválečné komunální architektury a urbanismu. Sociálně-demokratická správa v čele se starostou Leopoldem Pölzlem měla oporu v profesionální práci tamějšího městského stavebního úřadu a zejména v jeho architektovi Franzi Josefu Arnoldovi. Výsledkem je dodnes z velké části dochovaná zástavba zaměřená tehdy na sociální bydlení, ale například esovitě prohnuté řadové pavlačové domy na Klíši jsou i z dnešního pohledu jedinečným urbanistickým experimentem. Zásluhou Pavla Prouzy je právě docenění architekta Arnolda, jemuž je věnována obsáhlá kapitola. Součástí publikace je bohatá obrazová dokumentace. Kniha Vybudovali jsme! zachycuje unikátní kapitolu česko-německé architektury a dvojjazyčné vydání pak zpřístupňuje toto kulturní dědictví čtenářům českým i německým.
Litomyšl
Město na řece Loučné má mnoho tváří. Je historická, ale i moderní. Význam historické Litomyšle byl ještě umocněn 1. prosince 1999, kdy byl zdejši zámek spolu s okolím na zámeckém návrší zapsán do Seznamu památek světového kulturního dědictví UNESCO. Zámecký areál, který spolu se sousedícím piaristickým kostelem a klášterem tvoří hlavní dominantu města, si uchoval své prostředí nezměněné od počátku 19. století a je jednou z nejvýznamnějších památek renesance u nás. Budova, stojící na místě gotického biskupského hradu ze 14. století, rozvíjí do monumentální podoby typ italského paláce s arkádovým dvorem, třemi nádvořími, třípatrovými klenutými arkádami, bohatě členěnými štíty a komíny. Interiéry zámku byly upraveny v pozdním baroku a raném klasicismu a doplněny bohatou malířskou výzdobou. Unikátně se z této doby dochovalo zámecké divadlo včetně souboru malovaných kulis a dekorací. K zámeckému areálu patří kromě parku i původně renesanční pivovar, který byl v první třetině 18. století barokně přestavěn Františkem Maxmiliánem Kaňkou, dále jízdárna, konírny a kočárovna. Město Litomyšl má ovšem ještě jinou pozoruhodnou prioritu, současnou architekturu. Raně novověké uměni a kultura se v něm setkávají s vysoce kvalitní současnou architekturou a uměním a vytvářejí tak přinejmenším ve středoevropském prostředí určitě ne tak obvyklý celek. Toto sepětí raného novověku i současnosti představuje a zdůrazňuje právě tato publikace. Autoři publikace Litomyšl (se spolutitulem) Zámecké návrší čele s editorem Prof. PhDr. Jiřím Kroupou přibližují čtenáři na 120 stánkách knihy historii a měnící se podoby města, hradu, zámku a celého zámeckého návrší s měnícími se majiteli. Klášterní projekty, jejich tvůrce, sochaře, malíře. Zámecké divadlo a další stavby. Na závěr potom pozoruhodnou proměnu města v posledních desetiletích. Texty jsou bohatě ilustrované historickými obrázky i současnými fotografiemi Jiřího Podrazila.

How do we want to live? How shall we build? Where can we find ideas for the houses and cities of the future? Niklas Maak and Johanna Diehl focus their attention on these highly topical questions in their joint project “Eurotopians”. Architekti Zbuškovci
Košickí architekti Zbuškovci (otec a syn) zanechali svojím architektonickým dielom výraznú stopu v histórii slovenskej architektúry. Doménou tvorby Ferdinanda Zbuška st. (1918 1995) bola predovšetkým priemyselná architektúra. V povojnových časoch sa mu zase ušiel v Košiciach údel organizátora znárodnenej projekcie a história ho eviduje predovšetkým ako zakladateľa a prvého riaditeľa košického Stavoprojektu.
Architektúra jeho najstaršieho syna Ferdinanda Ivana Zbuška (1944 1996) sa viaže predovšetkým ku stavbám pre kultúru a evidujeme ho v dejinách ako najväčšieho staviteľa slovenských divadiel. Svedčí o tom aj najvyššie slovenské architektonické ocenenie Cena Dušana Jurkoviča za rekonštrukciu divadla Nová scéna v Bratislave ktorú mu udelil Spolok architektov Slovenska v roku 1992.
Osudy otca a syna architektov Zbuškovcov boli výrazne poznačené zmenami hopodárskymi, politickými i spoločenskými. Kým život a dielo otca Ferdinanda Zbuška st. spadá do obdobia zakladania a rozvoja socialistickej projekcie so všetkými
jej dôsledkami, v živote a diele jeho syna Ivana si nemôžeme nevšimnúť opačný proces, keď architekt výnimočných kvalít nedokáže zachytiť pozitívne vývojové trendy rozpadu pôvodných ťažkopádnych projektových ústavov na akcieschopné súkromné projekcie, ktoré dokážu lepšie reagovať na požiadavky trhového mechanizmu.
Životné osudy architektov Zbuškovcov sú navzájom prepojené predovšetkým skutočnosťou, že obaja vykonávali svoju profesiu v deformovanom prostredí socialistických projektových ústavov. Kým otec zažil obdobie, keď sa tento systém
ešte len začal vytvárať, jeho syn Ivan ho zažil v jeho hádam najrozvinutejšej forme, keď boli jednotlivé projektové organizácie viac-menej špecializované na jednotlivé odvetvia hospodárstva, resp. na jednotlivé typologické druhy budov. Obaja žili a tvorili v dobách, ktoré často označujeme ako zložité a v ktorých vykonávali profesiu, ktorá nebola spoločensky docenená.
A brassói Fekete templom - reformáció és renováció - Felekezeti, városi, rendi csoportidentitás kifejeződése egy újjászülető épületben
"1689-ben Brassó városát tűzvész pusztította, amelynek áldozatául esett a város egykori Szűz Mária (1542 óta evangélikus) plébániatemploma is. A tűzvész összefüggött azzal a török uralom megtörését eredményező történelmi változással, amelynek során 1687-ben Erdély a Habsburg Birodalom része lett. Brassó lakosságának 1688-as lázadása, amelyet Caraffa császári generális fojtott el, a tűzvész közvetlen előzményei közé tartozik. Erre a katasztrófára emlékeztet a főtemplom újkori "Fekete templom" elnevezése és az is, hogy azt a 18. században mind tömegében, mind belső terében a régi, késő gótikus templomnak abban a formájában állították helyre, amelyet nem sokkal a reformáció előtt, az 1530-as évek elején nyert el.
A művészettörténeti tanulmányait Kolozsvárott végző Ziegler Bálint Ágnes Budapesten, az Eötvös Loránd Tudományegyetemen szerzett doktori fokozatot a jelen könyv alapjául szolgáló disszertációjára, amelynek legfontosabb tétele, hogy a városi plébániatemplom gótikus jellegét a középkori kőfaragó mesterség hagyományait követő és egyben az 1700 körüli helyi korai barokk stílusban jártas mesterek őrizték meg. A vizsgálat eredményeként az újjáépített templom az ún. "barokk-gótika" emlékeként áll előttünk, és azt, hogy egyszerre őrzött középkori hagyományokat és újkori vonásokat, felszerelési tárgyainak és liturgikus ruházati gyűjteményeinek alapos katalógusa is alátámasztja.
Az épület fő korszakait ábrázoló monográfia tudományos értéke kétségtelen. A mai olvasót azonban talán leginkább az fogja érdekelni, hogy milyen motiváció és miféle értékrend vezethetett az épület sajátos - és a rekonstrukciót is meghatározó - formájának a kialakulásához. Az alcímben szereplő "identitás" szó azokat az értékeket fejezi ki, amelyeket az épület reprezentál. Mint legfontosabb középület a városi identitás kifejezőeszköze: hatalmas tömegével, tágas és sokfelől megközelíthető hosszházával és benne karzataival. Ezekben a mindenféle rangú és rendű polgárság a társadalmi státuszának megfelelő helyet kapott. A másik a felekezeti identitás, amely a középkort nem tagadó, hanem a legfontosabb emlékeit megőrző reformáció során alakult ki. Ez megfelel a lutheri és Melanchton-féle reformáció azon, az erdélyi szász városokban uralkodó irányának, amely mértéktartásával is megkülönböztette magát a radikálisabb mozgalmaktól. Erdélyben e felekezetek közötti türelmet éppen 450 évvel ezelőtt iktatták törvénybe is.
