Your Cabin in the Woods

Your Cabin in the Woods For 70 years, readers have been enjoying Meinecke's classic odes to the simple life, Your Cabin in the Woods (1943) and Cabin Craft and Outdoor Living (1947). For the first time, these books are combined into a deluxe two-color vintage package, featuring hundreds of charming illustrations by Victor Aures, known for his work with the Boy Scouts of America. In writing both practical and inspirational, Meinecke details how to turn your dream into a reality, from building plans to choosing land to using tools. However the book's enduring appeal owes in large part to its warmly engaging tone and firm belief in the restorative power of nature. He delights in the satisfaction of hard work, writing "in the doing you find yourself tired, muscles a bit sore, hands hardened and rough, but you will say over and over again, 'I did it.'" Meinecke's homespun wisdom is a comfort in your toil, "Take full enjoyment in the building. Take time out to rest. Most city folks seem always to rush things through. Why? Lay off until tomorrow. Take an afternoon nap. Stop the clock for the weekend. Get off to an early start in the cool of tomorrow morning. You may be crowded in your work in town, but this should be your rest cure, your recreating. Don't spoil it by city driving standards

The New Pavilions

Tents, bandstands, displays, places for sitting, listening, seeing and being seen...Pavilions have myriad forms and as many functions. For architects and designers, they offer unique opportunities to experiment with form, construction, material, structure, surface and texture, often as prototypes for larger buildings or as purely artistic pursuits. A pavilion's particular location also offers rich possibilities for interaction with the landscapes, streetscapes and peoplescapes around it. Pavilions can be temples to digital interaction or provide oases of surreal calm and isolation. This is a selection of the best examples produced in recent years. From the cutting- edge forms of Sou Fujimoto to Zaha Hadid's Chanel pavilion, from small structures created entirely out of farm waste to a mirrored carapace conceived by Olafur Eliasson, each pavilion featured provides a lesson in the extreme possibilities of built form and demonstrates that many of the biggest ideas in architecture start small.

Chairs by Architects

What is it that distinguishes a chair designed by an architect? Why is it so tempting for an architect to have a chair in his or her portfolio? Is it possible to use creative solutions interchangeably in both domains? Chairs by Architects answers these and many other questions to show how qualities in the buildings by architects are also evident in their chair design: pieces of furniture, like manifestos, become signatures of architectural style. The 55 architects include early modern architectural pioneers such as Otto Wagner, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Antoni Gaudi and Walter Gropius, together with more recent modern masters such as Oscar Niemeyer, Santiago Calatrava, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry and Daniel Libeskind. The book contains interviews on Designing (in conversation with David Adjaye), Manufacturing (with David E. Bright, Knoll Inc.), Selling (with Zeev Aram), Collecting (with Richard Wright) and Preserving (with Susanne Graner, Vitra Design Museum). This is essential reading for everyone concerned with design, architecture and the relationship between creators and their creations.

Ando

A monumental touch: Tadao Ando, master of the serene yet mightyPhilippe Starck describes him as a mystic in a country which is no longer mystic. Karl Lagerfeld regards him as a 21st-century genius who saw everything, learned everything, then forgot everything and remade everything. For the Pritzker Prize jury, originality is his medium. In this essential TASCHEN introduction to Tadao Ando we explore the hybrid of tradition, modernism, and function that allows his buildings to enchant architects, designers, fashion designers, and beyond. Through key projects including private homes, churches, museums, apartment complexes, and cultural spaces, we explore a uniquely monumental yet comforting aesthetic that draws as much on the calm restraint of Japanese tradition as the compelling modernist vocabularies of Bauhaus and Le Corbusier. With featured projects in Japan, France, Italy, Spain, and the United States, we see not only Ando s global reach but also his refined sensitivity for the environs the play of light through windows, and, in particular, the interaction of buildings with water. From the mesmerizing Church of the Light in Osaka to the luminous Punta della Dogana Contemporary Art Center in Venice, this is a radiant tour through a distinctly contemporary form as much as a timeless appeal of light, elements, and equilibrium.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans)"

Prototyping for Architects

Prototyping is an essential part of the designer's repertoire. Designers prototype their projects to test them, structurally, aesthetically, technically. Whether the prototype works or not is not the point: prototyping is the revelatory process through which the designer gains insight. There are three reasons why contemporary prototyping techniques are transforming the way architects design and build: at a miniature scale, prototyping aids the architect in the presentation to clients of complex spatial ideas; prototyping empowers the architect-designer to test and prove a building's feasibility, leading to more open-minded construction solutions; and whether additive (3D printing) or subtractive (robotic milling), prototyping can lead to unexpected and exciting new possibilities within design as a whole, across design disciplines, thus blurring the boundaries between them in highly creative ways. The book has four sections: an introduction that charts the rise of prototyping in design history, more specifically in architecture; an overview of techniques; a survey section featuring 30 projects, each presented through texts drawn from first-hand interviews, on-site photographs and drawings; and a reference section, which includes a glossary of technical terms.

Hadid

Radical space: How Zaha Hadid created a 21st-century architectureZaha Hadid was a revolutionary architect, who for many years built almost nothing, despite winning critical acclaim. Some even said her audacious, futuristic designs were unbuildable.During the latter years of her life, Hadid s daring visions became a reality, bringing a unique new architectural language to cities and structures as varied as the Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art in Cincinnati, hailed by The New York Times as the most important new building in America since the Cold War; the MAXXI Museum in Rome; the Guangzhou Opera House in China; and the London 2012 Olympics Aquatics Centre. At the time of her unexpected death in 2016, Hadid was firmly established among the elite of world architecture, recognized as the first woman to win both the Pritzker Prize for architecture and the RIBA Royal Gold Medal, but above all as a giver of new forms, the first great architect of the noughties. From her early sharply angled buildings to later more fluid architecture that made floors, ceilings, walls, and furniture part of an overall design, this essential introduction presents key examples of Hadid s pioneering practice to study an artist, as much as an architect, who fought to break the old rules and crafted her own 21st-century universe.About the series: Each book in TASCHEN s Basic Architecture series features: an introduction to the life and work of the architect the major works in chronological order information about the clients, architectural preconditions as well as construction problems and resolutions a list of all the selected works and a map indicating the locations of the best and most famous buildings approximately 120 illustrations (photographs, sketches, drafts and plans)"

Lautner

Space age architecture: Going back to the future with the visionary West Coast architectMichigan-born architect John Lautner (1911 1994) was behind some of the most striking and innovative architectural designs in mid-20th-century America. Designing homes and commercial buildings primarily in Southern California, Lautner s innovative work captured the pioneering optimism of 1950s America, a time of space-age technology, economic growth, and affluence. Today, several of Lautner s houses are labeled Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monuments.Lautner s projects focused on the relationship between humans, space, and nature. He was always particularly sensitive to the surrounding environment and would often integrate water and natural landscapes into his designs. His houses are characterized by sweeping rooflines, glass-paneled walls, and steel beams, in a heady combination of fantasy and minimalism. Eschewing architectural orthodoxies, Lautner emphasized geometric shapes such as circles and triangles, incorporating myriad technological innovations.Ingenious uses of modern building materials such as concrete allowed him to blend his structures into unique locations in the Californian landscape, perching his sci-fi structures on hillsides, beaches, and deserts. Residences in the Los Angeles area, including the Chemosphere House and the Silvertop, boast panoramic views and still exude an almost otherworldly magnetism. In this new Basic Art guide, we take you into the heart of Lautner s idiosyncratic practice, discover his manifold influences and ideas, and survey the resulting gems of modern architecture."

Brick - A World History

This totally original architecture book - the first ever comprehensive study of brick - follows the story of brick from 5,000 bc to its use in building today, via the vast baths and basilicas of ancient Rome, through the wonders of Gothic brick in Germany, the majestic temples of Pagan and Mughal mosques in Iran, to its modern revival. Marvellously illustrated with spectacular, specially-taken photographs, Brick is at once an historical account of how bricks have been employed by architects of every period, a technical survey of brickmaking and bricklaying, and an essay in architectural and cultural history. The authors have applied their expert visual and technical knowledge to more than one hundred themes, from bricks in ancient Egypt to their distinctive use by such modern masters as Louis Kahn, Alvar Aalto and Renzo Piano. Great works of engineering - viaducts, tunnels and bridges - are given prominence alongside great cathedrals and country houses, temples and mosques, testifying to the incredible versatility and importance of bricks and brickwork.

Architecture in Wood - A World History

Wood has unique qualities, yet is undervalued or ignored in histories of architecture. However, leading designers around the world are increasingly drawn to it to satisfy social and environmental needs. Will Pryce, the most admired architectural photographer in Britain, has travelled the world seeking both famous and obscure buildings in wood. Intensely dramatic but not over-dramatized, technically flawless, but not merely documentary, his photographs convey all the excitement of encountering these amazing structures first hand. In the substantial text he shows how the wooden heritage of Japan grew from its Buddhist history; how Russia's carpenters determined its iconic domes; how Norway's stave churches contain clues to her pagan past; how Turkic tribes brought the yali from Asia; how the settlers of New England would use a provincial English tradition on the new continent; and how, today, sophisticated architects such as Peter Zumthor and Renzo Piano are inventing an eloquent new wooden architecture.

Calatrava

Futuristic fusion: A poetry of architecture, art, and engineeringSpanish visionary Santiago Calatrava is renowned around the world as an architect, structural engineer, sculptor, and artist. Famed for bridges as much as buildings, he has made his name with neofuturistic structures that combine deft engineering solutions with dramatic visual impact. From the Athens 2004 Olympic sports complex and the Museum of Tomorrow to the Peace Bridge, Calgary; Alamillo Bridge in Seville; and the Mujer Bridge in Buenos Aires, Calatrava s creations show particular interest in the meeting point of movement and balance. Piano

Building virtuoso: The exploration and iconoclasm of an Italian masterWhile some architects have a signature style, Renzo Piano seeks to apply coherent ideas to extraordinarily different projects. His buildings impress as much for their individual impact as for their diversity of scale, material, and form.Piano rose to international prominence with his codesign of the Pompidou Center in Paris, described by The New York Times as a building that turned the architecture world upside down. Since then, he has continued to craft many high-profile cultural spaces, including the Modern Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago; the Morgan Library Renovation and Expansion in New York; and, most recently, the Whitney Museum of American Art, an asymmetric nine-story structure in Manhattan s Meatpacking District with both indoor and outdoor galleries. In New York and London, the Renzo touch has also transformed the skyline with the towers of the New York Times Building and the Shard, the tallest building in the European Union. This essential introduction travels from Osaka, Japan, to Bern, Switzerland, and through many cities, structures, and islands in between, to explore the staggering scope of the Renzo Piano repertoire. From the inside-out Pompidou to the airy shells of the Tjibaou Cultural Center in Noumea, New Caledonia, this is a thrilling journey through the beauty of architecture, where, in Piano s own words, each time, it is like life starting all over again. Lacná kniha Nagyőr Szent Anna-temploma (-25%)

A római katolikus Szent Anna-templom a XV. században épült gótikus stílusban. Német forrás szerint már a XII. században állt e helyen egy, a strázsákat szolgáló erődtemplom. Templomunk egyhajós, torony nélküli egyház, a legkisebb azok közül, amelyeket eddig bemutattunk. Keletelt, föltehetően a július 26-i Szent Anna-napján kelő Naphoz igazítva. Zsindely fedi, ahogy a szentély ablakait elválasztó támpilléreket is az óvja esőtől, hótól. A két keresztboltos szakaszos szentély (8,3 × 5,4 m) az apszis felé Y leágazású bordákkal fél-nyolcszögzáródású. Szélesebb hajója (8,7 × 8,6 m) osztatlan, két keresztboltos szakasszal. A templomnak négy csúcsíves ablaka van, három a szentélyben, egy a hajó déli oldalán nyílik. A kétosztású ablakok mérműkoronája egyszerű díszű. A "szepsi tízlándzsások székét", melyet egy 1243-as oklevél nobiles sub decem lanceis costituti néven említ, Betlenfalváról (Betlanovcéről) irányították. A Szepes vármegyei falu 1919-ig Magyarországhoz tartozott. Német lakosságát a II. világháború után kitelepítették Németországba. 1976-ban Szepesbélához csatolták. Nagyőr pirinyó kis falu. Ha Szepesbéla felől közelítjük meg, templomtorony híján először észre sem vesszük dombhajlatok közt megbúvó házait. Nagyőrt sok minden összeköti Kisszebennel is: közelségük, birtokos családjaik, középkori pecsétjükön.
