The Big Book of Legs

The third in Dian Hanson’s wildly successful series on erotic body parts explores how the female leg became central to women’s emancipation, from the French Revolution to the sexual revolution. Over 400 photos document the first burlesque shows of the 1800s, the nylon-mania of the ’40s, and the golden age of leg magazines in the ’60s. From the Tip of the Toes to the Top of the Hose Running the gamut of gorgeous gams The female leg is a sexual oddity. Non-genital, and nearly identical in structure to the corresponding male body part, there is no obvious reason why it’s eroticized. Yet, through much of history, across many cultures, the female leg was hidden from sight and treated as such a taboo topic that it became an object of intense sexual obsession. In the Victorian era the word “leg” was so forbidden that it couldn’t be uttered in polite society, lest men be driven wild with lust. Even now, 100 years after women’s legs came out of hiding, their allure remains strong. In this third book of Dian Hanson’s wildly successful body parts series she explores how freeing the female leg became central to women’s liberation, beginning with the post-French Revolution cancan and ending with the 1960’s Sexual Revolution miniskirt. Over 400 photos document the first burlesque “leg shows” of the 1800s, the silk-stockinged flappers of the 1920s, the nylon-mania of the 1940s, the dawn of the stiletto heel in the 1950s, all leading to the golden age of leg magazines in the 1960s. Learn who wore the first high heels, how nylons became a weapon of war, why Betty Grable’s were the million dollar legs, where Elmer Batters got his start, and just what the deal is with feet, while enjoying great vintage photos by Irving Klaw, Batters and other masters of leg art.

The Big Butt Book

The Big Butt Book explores our fascination with female booty from high, round and perky to badonkadonk, in over 400 photos, interspersed with interviews including thic goddess Buffie the Body, porn icon John (Buttman) Stagliano, filmmaker Tinto Brass, and artist Robert Crumb, as well as the best and most bootylicious of contemporary butt models. Sweet cheeks A cornucopia of delectable derri?res The Kama Sutra gives detailed instructions on how to spank it. Contemporary Italians touch it for luck before placing a bet. Americans are having it cosmetically enhanced at rates approaching breast enlargement surgery. The female butt, tush, culo, or derri?re has always inspired awe, fantasy, and slavish devotion. Curiously, its primary purpose is functional rather than aesthetic: butts balance our bodies while running, according to biologists. But ask any pygophiliac—as fundament fans are clinically termed—and you’ll get the same answer: female hindquarters exist to please the eye, the hands, and parts south. A pert posterior causes instant arousal, as Zora Neale Hurston observed in Their Eyes Were Watching God: "The men noticed her firm buttocks like she had grape fruits in her hip pockets." Or, as rapper Sir Mix-a-lot proclaimed, "My anaconda don’t want none, unless you’ve got buns, hun." Having all but disappeared from western culture in the breast-obsessed second half of the 20th century, the fully formed fanny is currently enjoying a massive resurgence, attributed by some to American actress Jennifer Lopez, by others to the rise of booty-centric hip hop culture. Yet this rage for shapely butts is nothing new. The ancient Greeks worshipped at the temple of Aphrodite Kallipygos, Goddess of the Beautiful Buttocks, while a womanly rump has always been an object of worship in most of the southern hemisphere. The Big Butt Book explores this perennial fascination with female booty—from small and taut to large and sumptuous—in the fourth installment of Dian Hanson’s critically acclaimed body parts series. Over 400 photos from 1900 to the present day, including works by Elmer Batters, Ellen von Unwerth, Jean-Paul Goude, Ralph Gibson, Richard Kern, Jan Saudek, Ed Fox, Terry Richardson and Sante D’Orazio, of butts ranging from petite Pam Anderson’s to sumptuous Serena Williams’, are contextualized by interviews with porn icon John (Buttman) Stagliano, filmmaker Tinto Brass, artist Robert Crumb, bootylicious butt queens Buffie The Body, Coco and Brazil’s Watermelon Woman, plus Eve Howard and her life-long spanking obsession.

Araki. Bondage

He’s been called a genius and a poet, but also a misogynist, a pornographer, a monster?but Nobuyoshi Araki’s work transcends simple moralistic classifications. He has said of his work: “There is no conclusion. It’s completely open. It doesn’t go anywhere.” One of the greatest Japanese photographers of our time, Araki’s oeuvre is marked by an unmistakable mastery of composition, color, and tone. Meaning “the beauty of tight binding,” Kinbaku-bi, the traditional Japanese art of erotic bondage has long fascinated the photographer, becoming one of his most important subjects. Araki plays with patterns of subjugation and emancipation, death and desire and with the slippage between serene image and shock. Whether literally or figuratively, his models are certainly immobilized, but in the most tantalizing ways?girls lay bound but defiant, suspended from the ceiling, in traditional dress or nude, face-on, sometimes with a flower subtly positioned between their legs. Araki picks his all-time favorite images of bondage. The result is a testament to his ability to tantalizing balance sexual vulnerability and seduction like no other.

Toiletpaper Magazine 20

The latest creative collaboration between Maurizio Cattelan and Pierpaolo Ferrari Since its first issue in June 2010, Toilet Paper has created a world that displays ambiguous narratives and a troubling imagination. Combining the vernacular of commercial photography with twisted narrative tableaux and surrealistic imagery, the magazine contains no text; each picture springs from an idea, often simple, and through a complex orchestration of people it becomes the materialization of the artists' mental outbursts. The result is a publication that is itself a work of art, which, through its accessible form as a magazine and through its wide distribution, challenges the limits of the contemporary art economy.

Circesque

"Circesque" is a celebration of an idea Christian Tagliavini had in 2008 and resulted in his photographic series of the same title produced in 2019. Exploring the world of the circus, this specially crafted book is a unique invitation for the reader to form their own stories through exquisitely detailed costumes, unexpected props, and a glimpse of the people behind the greasepaint and powder. "Circesque", explores the untold lives of circus folk. Stripped of the tired clichés of circus life, these mise-en-scéne portraits reveal the human behind the archetype. The images betray the protagonists’ innermost feelings as they mount the platform, put themselves on the line, and take the risk: all under the watchful eye of their audience. Acrobats. Trapezists. High-wire performers. Escape artists. Tattooed ladies. Jugglers. Nature-defying contortionists. All present and accounted for as in any traditional Big Top. But a closer look reveals some unusual details.

Flirting with Danger

A picture should tell a story. It should open doors to a mysterious journey of thought by letting its viewers forget the world around them for a brief moment. David Drebin is known for infusing his photographic masterpieces with compelling narratives. Although each of his works is marked by creative uniqueness, his signature style puts a distinct stamp under each image - a romantic melancholy with a hint of eroticism that elegantly invites you into an exciting fantasy. In his new illustrated book Flirting With Danger, the renowned star photographer now presents particularly sensational moments of this theme. David Drebin creates a dream world in a cinematographic way, which, thanks to his hyper-realistic style, seems so lifelike that the viewer feels part of the scenery. Perhaps it is this twist that makes his artworks so suspenseful, or perhaps it is the way he skilfully stages his protagonists. Each of his pictures leaves the impression of its own dramaturgy, which only stimulates the mental cinema. What will happen next? What happened before? The artist's new coffee-table book is now dedicated to the fascinating attraction of the forbidden and the dangerous. Intense snapshots show approaches to the exciting sides of life. The result is a book in a class of its own. In an extra-large format, the artist's pictures can achieve maximum effect and thus skilfully bring the emotions of the viewers to their peak.

Kniha Josef Sudek / Otto Rothmayer: Návštěva u pana kouzelníka vychází ze stejnojmenné výstavy konané v roce 2021 a 2022 ke 125. výročí narození Josefa Sudka a 55. výročí úmrtí architekta Otto Rothmayera v Uměleckoprůmyslovém museu v Praze. Publikace čtenáře zavede jednak na Pražský hrad – společnou lásku obou přátel – a jednak do architektovy vily a její nevelké zahrady v břevnovské ulici Na Bateriích, jež se ve čtyřicátých až šedesátých letech 20. století staly místem setkávání skupiny spřízněných umělců a přátel. Útočiště v neklidné době a inspiraci pro svou tvorbu tu nacházeli například i Josef Kaplický, Bedřich Stefan, Hana Wichterlová, Vladimír Studený, Pravoslav Rada či René Roubíček. Josef Sudek zde pořídil celou řadu fotografií, které pak řadil do několika cyklů, například do sérií Procházka po kouzelné zahrádce, Vzpomínky, Malé vzpomínky či Poznámky. Velký soubor Sudkových prací – kontaktní kopie a fotografické pigmenty – doplňují tzv. puřidla a veteše, na jejichž originální adjustaci se Sudkem spolupracoval právě Otto Rothmayer a jež jsou dnes ceněny jako nejprogresivnější příspěvek světové fotografii. V ukázkách kniha připomíná též práce samotného hostitele i společných přátel ze sbírek Uměleckoprůmyslového musea v Praze, Muzea hlavního mšsta Prahy, Národního technického muzea v Praze, Muzea umění Olomouc a soukromého majetku.

A Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation Award. While neither denying the great challenges that await us nor concealing the damage inflicted by Man on Nature, the photographs selected for the second edition of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation's Environmental Photography Award reveal the incredible beauty that our Planet harbours, from the polar regions to the depths of the ocean, or even nestled in the heart of ancestral forests. Yevonde

'Be original or die would be a good motto for photographers to adopt…let them put life and colour into their work.' - Yevonde. Yevonde (1893-1975) was a businesswoman and tireless creator, as an innovator committed to colour photography when it was not considered a serious medium, her work is significant in the history of British portrait photography. Yevonde championed photography during a time where there were few women photographers working professionally, and this book tells the story of her life, works, and 60-year career. Yevonde: Life and Colour brings the photographer's works together again for the first time in 20 years and features previously unpublished works. This book showcases her experimentation with a range of techniques and genres including colour photography, portraiture, still-lifes, solarisation, and the Vivex colour process, and repositions her as a modern artist of the twentieth century. This highly illustrated publication provides in-depth context to Yevonde's images, considering their aesthetic and mythic references. Yevonde's portraits embody glorified tradition countered with a desire for the new. Her most renowned body of work is a series of women dressed as goddesses posed in surreal tableaux from the 1930s.

Mick Rock. The Rise of David Bowie. 1972-1973

A unique tribute from David Bowie’s official photographer and creative partner, Mick Rock, compiled in 2015, with Bowie’s blessing. In 1972, David Bowie released his groundbreaking album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. With it landed Bowie’s Stardust alter ego: a glitter-clad, mascara-eyed, sexually ambiguous persona who kicked down the boundaries between male and female, straight and gay, fact and fiction into one shifting and sparkling phenomenon of ’70s self-expression. Together, Ziggy the album and Ziggy the stage spectacular propelled the softly spoken Londoner into one of the world’s biggest stars.A key passenger on this glam trip into the stratosphere was fellow Londoner and photographer Mick Rock. Rock bonded with Bowie artistically and personally, immersed himself in the singer’s inner circle, and, between 1972 and 1973, worked as the singer’s photographer and videographer. This collection brings together spectacular stage shots, iconic photo shoots, as well as intimate backstage portraits. With a lenticular cover of different headshots, it celebrates Bowie’s fearless experimentation and reinvention, while offering privileged access to the many facets of his personality and fame. Through the aloof and approachable, the playful and serious, the candid and the contrived, the result is a passionate tribute to a brilliant and inspirational artist whose creative vision will never be forgotten.

1964: Eyes of the Storm

Photographs and Reflections by Paul McCartney 'Millions of eyes were suddenly upon us, creating a picture I will never forget for the rest of my life.' In 2020, an extraordinary trove of nearly a thousand photographs taken by Paul McCartney on a 35mm camera was re-discovered in his archive. They intimately record the months towards the end of 1963 and beginning of 1964 when Beatlemania erupted in the UK and, after the band's first visit to the USA, they became the most famous people on the planet. The photographs are McCartney's personal record of this explosive time, when he was, as he puts it, in the 'Eyes of the Storm'. 1964: Eyes of the Storm presents 275 of McCartney's photographs from the six cities of these intense, legendary months - Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C. and Miami - and many never-before-seen portraits of John, George and Ringo. In his Foreword and Introductions to these city portfolios, McCartney remembers 'what else can you call it - pandemonium' and conveys his impressions of Britain and America in 1964 - the moment when the culture changed and the Sixties really began. 1964: Eyes of the Storm includes: - Six city portfolios - Liverpool, London, Paris, New York, Washington, D.C. and Miami - and a Coda on the later months of 1964 - featuring 275 of Paul McCartney's photographs and his candid reflections on them - A Foreword by Paul McCartney - Beatleland, an Introduction by Harvard historian and New Yorker essayist Jill Lepore - A Preface by Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London, and Another Lens, an essay by Senior Curator Rosie Broadley
