Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine

A new, comprehensive survey of Sugimoto’s five-decade career, from grand dioramas and seascapes to eerie portraits of wax effigies and more Through his expansive exploration of the possibilities of still images, Hiroshi Sugimoto has created some of the most alluringly enigmatic photographs of our time?pictures that are meticulously crafted and deeply thought-provoking, familiar yet tantalizingly ambiguous. Hiroshi Sugimoto: Time Machine is a comprehensive survey of work produced over the past five decades, featuring selections from all of Sugimoto’s major series, as well as lesser-known works that illuminate his innovative, conceptually driven approach to making pictures. Texts by international writers, artists and scholars?including Geoffrey Batchen, Edmund de Waal, Mami Kataoka, Ralph Rugoff, Lara Strongman and Margaret Wertheim?highlight his work’s philosophical yet playful inquiry into the nature of representation and art, our understanding of time and memory, and the paradoxical character of photography as a medium so well suited to both documenting and invention. Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948) has exhibited extensively in major museums and galleries throughout the world, and his work is held in numerous public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo; National Gallery, London; National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo; Smithsonian, Washington, DC; and Tate, London, among others. Sugimoto divides his time between Tokyo and New York City.

Beusker

- The first monograph by Nature Photographer of the Year 2022 Lars Beusker - Touching black-and-white portraits of wild animals, photographed at close range - Lars Beusker seeks eye contact with the animals and achieves a direct closeness Look into my Eyes is a coffee-table book to dream about, marvel at, and sink into. The right read for animal lovers and lovers of aesthetic fine art photography. As one of the most important nature photographers of our time, Lars Beusker quite rightly received the title "Nature Photographer of the Year 2022 (first place)". He photographs wild animals in their natural environment at close range and almost always manages to make eye contact. Like a human portrait, Lars uses short focal lengths for which he approaches his models up to two meters. He consciously seeks the animal's attention and sensitively captures this intense moment with the camera. The viewer feels as if he can look directly into the animal's soul. The fascinating intimacy that the artist creates with giraffes, buffalo, and zebras is palpable. Beusker's photographs of wild elephants and big cats such as leopards, panthers and lions are also legendary. Animals that you would never get so close to as a human being under normal circumstances. The fascinating black-and-white photographs are bursting with detail. Every hair, every wrinkle and every muscle of the wild beauties is visible and in some pictures you have the feeling that the animal will jump out of the book at you in the next moment. Text in English and German.

La lunga strada di sabbia

The extraordinary picture story by Paolo Di Paolo, accompanied by texts by Pier Paolo Pasolini which documents and narrates Italians on vacation during Summer 1959, from the Tyrrhenian to the Adriatic Sea; from Ventimiglia to Trieste (from the western to the eastern border). In 1959 Paolo Di Paolo is a 34-year-old photographer collaborating with the cultural weekly magazine Il Mondo directed by Mario Pannunzio, and the widely distributed magazine Tempo. Pier Paolo Pasolini is a promising 37-year-old writer who had published The Best of Youth, The Street Kids and A Violent Life.He is not yet a film director. In Italy, the "economic miracle" has just begun. The newspapers tend to offer to Italian families a microcosm of mythical characters as a diversion to the dullness and fear of war, emigration, and poverty. Arturo Tofanelli, editor in chief of the monthly Successo and the weekly Tempo, entrusts the two young men, Di Paolo and Pasolini, who did not know each other, to do a report on the Italian Summer Holidays that will be published by Successo magazine in three issues (July, August and September 1959). The writer and the photographer set off from Ventimiglia together, with the plan of travelling through the coasts of Italy to the south and climbing up to Trieste. But they have different visions. "Pasolini was looking for a lost world of literary ghosts, an Italy that no longer existed," recalls Di Paolo. "I was looking for an Italy that was looking to the future. I conceived the title The Long Road of Sand meaning the strenuous road traveled by Italians to reach well-being and holidays after the War." A complex, delicate partnership is born between Pasolini and Di Paolo, they will travel together only the first stage of this journey, but this experience would later be consolidated in mutual respect and trust. Text in English, German and Italian.

Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage

Timeless, evocative and hauntingly beautiful: a retrospective monograph by a truly innovative image maker whose female gaze transformed fashion photography. American photographer Deborah Turbeville defies classification. She belongs to no school or movement. Her unique visual signature has been recognizable since her emergence as a major talent in the 1970s. Her images are evocative, difficult to date at first glance, and seem dreamlike to our 21st-century eyes. Turbeville stands apart from her male contemporaries, whose hard-edged, highly sexualized photographs of women now seem to be of their time in comparison with Turbeville's very different representation of beauty. This book focuses on the area of Turbeville's practice where her genius as an artist can be found: photocollage. In contrast to her contemporaries in fashion photography, she was deliberately playful with her images: xeroxing, cutting, scraping and pinning prints together, writing in the margins and creating narrative sequences. Her work is located far from single, glossy images. It inhabits a liminal zone between art and commerce. Built upon extensive research in the Deborah Turbeville archive, the work shown spans commercial and personal projects, with many images published for the first time. With texts by Vince Aletti, Anna Tellgren and Felix Hoffmann, this book brings into the spotlight the ways in which Turbeville redefined fashion photography, moving away from the sexual provocation and stereotypes assigned by male photographers to an idea of femininity on her terms. Deborah Turbeville: Photocollage will be an essential publication with modern relevance for all with a passion for fashion photography.

Hyperborea

A career-to-date retrospective of a unique creative talent. A journey to the most inaccessible Arctic regions of Siberia, showing dreamlike encounters with its people, landscapes, and fauna. Hyperborea presents unforgettable visual tales of life in the Siberian Arctic that Evgenia Arbugaeva knew when she was growing up in Tiksi, a town on the shore of the Laptev Sea in the Republic of Yakutia. Her work discloses both the fragility and beautiful desolation of the land and those who inhabit it, and her rigorously composed photographs glow with rich otherworldly color, bristle with the raw vibrancy of the climate, and exhibit the quiet intensity of lives borne out in seclusion and extremes. This beautifully produced photobook contains a decade of work, with photographs selected from across the full range of Arbugaeva’s series and extensive travels across the Russian Arctic coast to connect with people living in these remote and inhospitable places. The photographs that she brings back from her long-term visits convey a world where everything seems humans and nature, the sky and the land. An elemental space of deep solitude and slower pace of life. Her images invite us to contemplate a territory that has been a place of longing and imagination for many, which is now under existential threat from a multitude of environmental changes. With an introduction by anthropologist Piers Vitebsky, four texts by Arbugaeva to supplement the images, and a specially commissioned map to provide a sense of where Arbugaeva’s work is located, Hyperborea is a future collectible for all photobook fans and introduces a global audience to a very special talent in the world of photography. 45 color illustrations

Japan on a Glass Plate

Drawing from an extensive private collection assembled over many years, this book presents a unique selection of nineteenth-century photographs of Japan, many of which are published here for the first time. Between the twilight years of the Tokugawa shogunate (1603–1867) and the end of the Meiji Era (1868–1912) that followed it, photography offered a unique insight into the rapid transformation of Japan from an isolated, feudal society to a modern, industrialised state. In the four decades that followed the opening of the country in 1853, the camera evolved from an imported novelty to a familiar witness of Japanese daily life. Operating from the Treaty Ports of Yokohama and elsewhere, early practitioners of photography plied an often precarious trade in images of Japan and laid the foundations of what would soon become a highly competitive industry with a global reach. Whether cherished as souvenirs of an exotic land of fond imagination or curated as visual documents of a fast-changing society, these images by foreign and Japanese photographers, often packaged in exquisitely produced albums, enjoyed a wide circulation abroad and played an important role in influencing perceptions of Japan in the West well into the early twentieth century.
