Once upon a time in America: Rediscovering the first color photographs of the New World These rediscovered Photochrom and Photostint postcard images from the private collection of Marc Walter were produced by the Detroit Photographic Company between 1888 and 1924. Using a photolithographic process that predated the autochrome by nearly 20 years, they offered people the very first color photographs of The United States. Suddenly, the continent's colors were available for all to see. The rich ochres and browns of the Grand Canyon, the dazzle of Atlantic City, became a visual delight not only for eyewitnesses, but for Americans far and wide. Imbued with this sense of discovery and adventure, the pictures gathered here are a voyage through peoples, places and time at once. They take us through North America's vast and varied landscape, encounter its many communities, and above all transport us back to the New World of over a century ago. The Asylum of the Birds
Asylum of the Birds is a new body of work by Roger Ballen, one of the most original image-makers of our times. Ballen has always sought to push the boundaries of photographic practice and has created an aesthetic and artistic vision unlike any other contemporary photographer. The images in Asylum of the Birds have been photographed entirely within the confines of a house in a Johannesburg suburb, the location of which remains a tightly guarded secret. The inhabitants of the house, both people and animals, and most notably the ever-present birds, are the cast who perform within a sculptural and decorated theatrical interior that Ballen creates and orchestrates. The resulting images are painterly, complex and surreal. They are richly layered with graffiti, drawings, animals and found objects. In a world where photographers seek to avoid definition, and whose work is often banal, Ballen is a true original who not only defies genres, but has defined his own artistic space as well.
Karl Blossfeldt
A fascination for flora: Timeless photos in which plants become sculptures German photography pioneer Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) photographed plants so beautifully, and with such originality, that his work transcends the medium itself. Over more than 30 years, he took thousands of photographs, revealing a formally rigorous talent whose precision and dedication bridge the 19th- and 20th-century worlds of image making and bring a distinctly sculptural aspect to a firmly two-dimensional art form. Beautifully but starkly composed against plain cardboard backgrounds, Blossfeldt's images, relying on a northern light for their sense of volume, reveal nothing of the man but everything of themselves. They are still lifes, piercingly final statements on their subject, and have endured owing to their aesthetics and the ongoing fascination of students and photographers. Like their maker, they are quietly and lastingly effective.
Baileys Stardust
It takes a lot of imagination to be a good photographer it takes a lot of looking before you learn to see the extraordinary. David Bailey The portraits in this book have been personally selected by Bailey from the wide range of subjects and groups that he has captured so brilliantly over the last five decades: actors, writers, musicians, politicians, film-makers, models, artists and people encountered on his travels to Australia, India, Sudan and Papua New Guinea; many of them famous, some unknown, all of them engaging and memorable. Baileys Stardust will be accompanied by a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, London, in spring 2014, which will then tour to venues on four continents. The book, like the exhibition, is structured thematically, with iconic images presented alongside many lesser-known and previously unseen portraits, and includes an illuminating introduction by the art historian Tim Marlow. Initially engaged as an assistant to John French in 1959, Bailey was contracted by British Vogue the following year. He has since worked for the French, Italian and American editions of the magazine, created album sleeves for major recording artists such as the Rolling Stones, directed television commercials, and made documentary films, including in-depth studies of Cecil Beaton, Luchino Visconti and Andy Warhol. Baileys photographs helped to define the cultural and social scene of the 1960s, and immortalising figures from the worlds of fashion, music, film and art soon elevated Bailey to the status of celebrity himself. Antonionis cult film Blow-up (1966), about a London fashion photographer, was inspired by Bailey, whose life was also dramatised recently in the BBC film Well Take Manhattan (2012), which tells the story of his 1962 New York fashion shoot with the model Jean Shrimpton.
Jiří Valenta
Jiří Valenta (1936 -1991), významný malíř českého informelu a protagonista takzvaných Konfrontací. Po opuštění Československa v roce 1968, navázal na svou dosavadní tvorbu, ale nepodařilo se mu najít napojení na německou galerijní scénu. V roce 1975 přestává malovat a začíná v tajnosti fotografovat, své práce ovšem nijak neprezentuje a nechává je pouze ve formě diapositivů. Zemřel v Kolíně nad Rýnem.
Jaromír Funke - Between Construction and Emotion
The first large-scale monograph on this internationally renowned photographer.
Jaromír Funke (1896-1945) was a innovator of modern photography, just like Jaroslav Rössler, Man Ray, László Moholy-Nagy, Albert Renger-Patzsch, Aleksander Rodchenko, Paul Strand, and Edward Weston, to name but a few. Like them, Funke set out (in 1922) on the road towards abstraction, which would eventually lead him to his own particular “ism” – photogenism.
Funke also responded to Cubism and created exemplary works of the New Objectivity and Constructivism, but he stood closest to Bauhaus. During the 1920s, he was one of the first to adopt irrational approaches such as Poetism and Surrealism. In the second half of the 1930s, Funke established his “emotional photography” on the basis of Breton’s notion of the magic encounter. He was a typical universally educated intellectual of his era.
This book focuses primarily on the ideas that shaped and transformed Funke’s work, while placing it within the context of European avant-garde photography and culture, of which he was a pioneer.
The book was prepared in cooperation with Jaromír Funke’s daughter Miloslava Rupešová.
Fotografie v praxi: Pouliční fotografie
Ediční řada Fotografie v praxi je určena všem zájemcům o digitální fotografii (i když ji mohou využít i fotografové pracující stále s klasickými filmovými fotoaparáty). Postupně v této řadě vycházejí specializované publikace pro různé okruhy problémů, které zajímají každého fotografa. Knihy řady Fotografie v praxi obsahují i cvičení, která by měl čtenář absolvovat, a ukázku, jak tato cvičení splnili studenti autorových kurzů. Podnětné je i autorovo hodnocení a poznámky k těmto ukázkovým fotografiím.

Vojta Dukát
Moravský fotograf Vojta Dukát (* 1947) odešel po okupaci Československa sovětskou armádou do nizozemského exilu (1968). Toulal se po světě a vynikl v žánru humanistické fotografie. Snaží se být nadále profesionálním amatérem věrným odkazu jména přístroje zn. Ljubitel, nepracuje systematicky. Zdržuje se v místech, kde se mu daří nacházet harmonické vztahy v lidském společenství, k věcem a k přírodě. Rád komunikuje s lidmi nestresovanými představou, že čas jsou peníze. V letech 1974 a 1976 byl nominovaným fotografem agentury Magnum v Paříži. Od poloviny 80. let omezoval fotografování ve prospěch videozáznamů. Je oceňován za dlouhodobý přínos vizuálnímu umění (Capi-Lux Alblas Prijs 1997; Pieter Ouborg Prijs 2001). Texty v této druhé autorově monografii jsou dílem Antonína Dufka, historika umění a emeritního kurátora sbírky fotografie Moravské galerie v Brně, Melchiora de Wolffa, T. S. Gottlieba a Vojty Dukáta.

The Best of Czech Press Photo – obrazy dvou desetiletí je název zcela výjimečné publikace, která vyšla k otevření výstavy jubilejního 20.ročníku Czech Press Photo 2014. Na 496 stranách předkládá citově působivou obrazovou historii posledních dvaceti let, ale i pohled na podobu fotografie uplynulé doby. Jako v napínavém filmu zde defilují všechny „Fotografie roku“, a tak divák-čtenář znovu prožívá hlavní události a jevy jednotlivých let - válečné konflikty a přírodní katastrofy v dopadu na konkrétní osudy lidí, boj o dítě v dnešních rodinách, snahu jednotlivce postavit se rozpínavosti průmyslových koncernů, korupční aféry, které se šíří společností jako epidemie, ale i úsilí člověka zvítězit sám nad sebou. Je tu i přehled často překvapivých fotografií, kterým daly svou cenu děti, a také ty, jež v anketách oslovily na rozdíl od mezinárodních odborných porotců největší počet návštěvníků a získaly tak „Ceny diváků“.
