Cinema's Original Sin
For over a century, cinephiles and film scholars have had to grapple with an ugly artifact that sits at the beginnings of film history. D. W. Griffith’s profoundly racist epic, The Birth of a Nation, inspired controversy and protest at its 1915 release and was defended as both a true history of Reconstruction (although it was based on fiction) and a new achievement in cinematic art. Paul McEwan examines the long and shifting history of its reception, revealing how the film became not just a cinematic landmark but also an influential force in American aesthetics and intellectual life. In every decade since 1915, filmmakers, museums, academics, programmers, and film fans have had to figure out how to deal with this troublesome object, and their choices have profoundly influenced both film culture and the notion that films can be works of art. Some critics tried to set aside the film’s racism and concentrate on the form, while others tried to relegate that racism safely to the past. McEwan argues that from the earliest film retrospectives in the 1920s to the rise of remix culture in the present day, controversies about this film and its meaning have profoundly shaped our understandings of film, race, and art.

BOWIE IS STILL OUT THERE...
Following open heart surgery, Peter Carpenter was given one instruction - walk if you want to stay alive. So, when his hero died in 2016, he knew what he had to do. The figure who was to so many a companion and guide had left no single focal point for homage. To reconnect with him, Carpenter would take a walk into the past, to the places where David Jones became something more: David Bowie.
Leaving behind well-known shrines to Bowie, he journeyed through South London edgelands to obscurer haunts. Carpenter's quest, a series of happy accidents and chance meetings, took him to Bickley as well as Berlin and Brixton, to Eel Pie Island as well as Heddon Street and Beckenham.
Carpenter's perambulations echo Bowie's own wandering creative spirit. They reveal multiple influences, both conscious and unconscious, in Bowie's creative development. Ultimately, Carpenter reaches a fresh understanding of where Bowie sits in the culture, not as an outlier, but as part of a tradition, informed by those artists, poets and musicians who passed on their wisdom to him. Shoah
Sue Vice's study explores Claude Lanzmann's epic 1985 film Shoah both as cinema and as an example of Holocaust representation. Shoah, the distillation of more than 350 hours of footage gathered over eleven years, tells the story of the Holocaust through interviews with survivors of the extermination camps, bystanders who watched or participated in mass murder, and some of the perpetrators of genocide. Eschewing staple documentary elements of archival footage or narrating voiceover, the film is composed entirely of eyewitness interviews contrasted with footage of landscape in the present, and the chilling imagery of travelling trains. Shoah's effect is to represent the past, but only as it exists in the present - in Lanzmann's words, a "fiction of the real", and not a simple documentary. In a series of close readings of some of the film's interviews, Sue Vice follows Lanzmann's declaration that "Shoah is a fight against generalities", in emphasising the importance of detail in both dialogue and filmic technique. Through these analyses, Vice explores the background to the film, the difficulties in its financing and production, and the long process of editing that led to Lanzmann's realisation that "the subject of my film is death itself; death and not survival."In her afterword to this new edition, Sue Vice considers developments such as the online availability of the complete ‘Shoah Collection’, Lanzmann’s archive at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, and Shoah's continuing influence on films that witness genocides and the Holocaust, including Joshua Oppenheimer's The Look of Silence (2014), and Jonathan Glazer's The Zone of Interest (2023).
