Vila Lanna. Příběh domu a lidí
Vila Lanna je zřejmě nejstarší dochovanou neorenesanční stavbou v Praze. Její stavitel Vojtěch Lanna mladší ji užíval od počátku 70. let 19. století do roku 1909. Jeho syn ji prodal v roce 1913 bubenečskému starostovi Aloisi Potůčkovi. Od Potůčkovy rodiny ji získal karlínský podnikatel v oboru minerálních olejů Vojtěch Zikmund. Přestože byla vila Lanna už za tzv. první republiky pod částečným památkovým dohledem a několikrát prošla renovací, její další osudy i majitelé ve 20. století zůstávali dlouhou dobu téměř neznámí. V průběhu let získala vila podle svých vlastníků i nájemníků - zvučných i méně známých jmen - řadu přídomků: vila Lanna či Lannova vila, vila generála Pellé, vila generála Mittelhausera, Vila Valdštejn (Villa Waldstein) anebo Valdštejnský palác (Palais Waldstein), podle Adrienny Tůmové, provdané Waldstein-Wartenbergové. Dokonce byla po určitou dobu známa jako Polská vila, protože zde krátce po skončení druhé světové války sídlil polský konzulát. Nakonec se opět vrátila k původnímu označení vila Lanna, i když současnými zaměstnanci Akademie věd České republiky je familiárně nazývána jen jako "Lannovka". Vydejme se po stopách vily Lanna a objevme, že není jen výjimečným architektonickým skvostem, ale také významným dějinným symbolem Prahy i tohoto státu, s jehož osudy se několikrát protnula.
Bratislava
Kniha zachytáva atmosféru Bratislavy v rokoch 1944 až 1964, ako ju vnímal významný slovenský fotograf Karol Kállay. Prostredníctvom fotografií a lyrických textov rozpráva príbeh mesta, jeho obyvateľov a štvrtí, ktoré dnes už neexistujú. Pripomína časy tesne po vojne, keď sa mesto spamätávalo z hrôz a začalo si vytvárať novú tvár. Ale aj časy, keď ho ubíjala nezmyselnosť nového režimu. Všetko sa odráža aj na tvárach obyvateľov Bratislavy, ktorých životy autor zvečnil na svojich výnimočných fotografiách. Úvodný text, preložený do anglického jazyka, napísal profesor Jozef Leikert.

Raphael (1483–1520) is considered the most important artist of the Italian High Renaissance alongside Michelangelo and Leonardo. With his smooth, warm, ruddy face which radiated light in all directions, Chairman Mao Zedong was a fixture in Chinese propaganda posters produced between the birth of the People’s Republic in 1949 and the early 1980s.
Chairman Mao, portrayed as a stoic superhero (aka the Great Teacher, the Great Leader, the Great Helmsman, the Supreme Commander), appeared in all kinds of situations (inspecting factories, smoking a cigarette with peasant workers, standing by the Yangzi River in a bathrobe, presiding over the bow of a ship, or floating over a sea of red flags), flanked by strong, healthy, ageless men and “masculinized” women and children wearing baggy, sexless, drab clothing. The goal of each poster was to show the Chinese people what sort of behavior was considered morally correct and how great the future of Communist China would be if everyone followed the same path toward utopia by uniting together.
This book brings together a selection of colorful propaganda artworks and cultural artifacts of Chinese propaganda posters, many of which are now extremely rare.
Colour Unbound: Henri Matisse 1941–1954
1941 marked a turning point in the life and work of Henri Matisse. At the age of seventy-two, he underwent major surgery that left him physically fragile. Yet Matisse viewed this moment not as a setback but as an opportunity 'to make the greatest progress of my life'. From that point until his death in 1954, he entered one of the most inspired and productive periods of his career. During those years, he created some of his greatest masterpieces - from the Chapel of the Rosary in Vence to his luminous cut-out gouaches, including Jazz. Comparative Musicology

Scientific attempts to answer this question through cross-cultural comparison stalled during the 20th century and have only recently begun to make a resurgence. In this book, Patrick Savage, a leader in this resurgence synthesises recent advances from musicology and related fields including psychology, linguistics, computer science, and evolutionary anthropology to outline ways to understand and compare all the world's music. He applies comparative musicology to longstanding debates including universal and culturally-specific aspects of human music; evolutionary relationships between song, speech, and animal vocalisation; and applications to areas including music copyright, 2nd language acquisition, social bonding, and cultural heritage revitalisation. In doing so, he argues for an inclusive, multidisciplinary field that uplifts traditionally marginalised voices and combines the qualitative methods traditionally employed by musicologists and cultural anthropologists with quantitative methods from the natural sciences. The book is accessibly written using over 50 figures/tables and an interactive tutorial with audio examples, with each chapter designed to be readable/teachable on its own. It is designed to be appreciated by anyone from undergraduate students to senior professors, without requiring any specialised background knowledge.
