Bratislavský rodák Arthur Fleischmann (1896 – 1990) bol medzinárodne uznávaným sochárom, ktorého profesionálna kariéra sa rozvíjala viac ako 60 rokov. Počas svojho života pôsobil na rôznych miestach štyroch kontinentov (Európa, Afrika, Ázia, Austrália). Publikácia sa podrobnejšie venuje ranému obdobiu tvorby tohto všestranného umelca (20. a 30. roky 20. storočia), ktoré je spojené s Bratislavou, kde pravidelne vystavoval, a Viedňou, kde žil a pracoval až do svojho definitívneho odchodu zo strednej Európy v roku 1938. Prináša viaceré nové informácie k biografii A. Fleischmanna a najmä komplexné zhodnotenie jeho diela v širšom historickom a umelecko-historickom kontexte. Kniha zachycující příběh pozoruhodného projektu sochaře a kováře Petra Císařovského, sestává ze dvou částí. Iniciační projekt, nazvaný Sedm bran se odvíjí od počátku 90. let minulého století a základem se stala realizace brány sv. Františka, která symbolicky otevírá nejen františkánský areál uprostřed Prahy, ale i duchovní centrum města, založené císařem Karlem IV. Během času přibyla v protilehlém koutě zahrady brána sv. Anežky České. Vznikla tak díla výtvarně a ideově navázaná na genia loci daného místa. V průběhu let se zrodil nápad na vymezení celého prostoru zahrady. Výsledkem se stal projekt, který symbolicky navazuje na snahu Karla IV. vytvořit v daném místě novou korunovační katedrálu, ze zahrady by tak vznikl „Chrám pod širým nebem“. V první části knihy autor blíže seznamuje s realizacemi svých bran i mimo tento projekt. Tvorba sochaře a kováře Petra Císařovského (* 1950) představuje unikátní syntézu sochařského citu a dokonale zvládnutého řemesla. The Seven Gates of Petr Císařovský The present book, presenting the story of this fascinating project by sculptor and blacksmith Petr Císařovský, is composed of two parts. The initiatory project, entitled “Seven Gates” (Sedm bran) began to emerge from the start of the 1990s, originating from the realization of the St. Francis Gate – symbolically opening not only the Franciscan monastic complex in the historic core of Prague, but equally a spiritual centre of the city itself, founded by Emperor Charles IV. Later, in the opposite corner of the garden, another gate was raised, the St. Agnes of Bohemia Gate, resulting in two works that form both artistic and intellectual links to the genius loci of the given site. Over time, the idea emerged of outlining the entire space of the garden. The result became a project making symbolic reference to the medieval plans of Charles IV to raise a new coronation cathedral on the site; the contemporary intervention, in turn, transforming the garden into a “sacred space in the open air”. In the first part of the book, the author presents in greater detail the realizations of his gates not connected to the central project. The work of sculptor and artistic blacksmith Petr Císařovský (* 1950) represents a unique synthesis of refined sculptural sensibility with exceptional skill in craftsmanship. In the area of wrought-iron sculpture, he ranks among the most prominent Czech creators, able to combine traditional metalworking procedures with a contemporary view of the world. His artworks are the bearers of a strong spiritual charge and a quiet reflection of human existence.

Vytváranie sochy z ničoho mu je oveľa bližšie. Jeho bronzové kompozície majú energiu umeleckej myšlienky, ale sú aj lyrickým vyznením intímnych príbehov. Instead of a traditional academic monograph, this book was conceived to describe a pilgrimage through time and to piece together fragments of knowledge into an overall picture of his life’s work. Ján Ťapák graduated from the Department of Sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Bratislava and in his professional career he has always expressed a preference for shaping sculpture that occupies a physical space as if it were carved from stone. Sculpting something out of thin air resonates more with him. His bronze compositions have both the energy of artistic self-expression and the lyrical tone of intimate stories. Leafing through the book evokes the enjoyable atmosphere that was generated when author, art historian and publicist Ľudovít Petránsky met at Ján Ťapák’s studio. Sto let od narození Karla Malicha (1924–2019) reviduje a sumarizuje historik umění Karel Srp poznání jednoho z nesmrtelných českého umění. Srp ví, že Malichovy drátěné plastiky „vznikající po roce 1976, lze obtížně zařadit do dějin umění“, což mu však nebrání zkoumat je nově a s mimořádnou erudicí, odvahou a jasností, a nevynechat žádný z diskurzů – od Steinera po Merleau-Pontyho. Srpova důslednost v kombinaci s fascinací tvůrcem, který „dokázal (…) propojit abstrakci a realismus, empirickou všednost a kosmogonické vize, bezvýznamnost a závažnost, prchavost a věčnost (…) přechod od syrového dojmu, od nejprostšího, nejvšednějšího prchavého zážitku, nestojícího ani za zaznamenání, do nadsmyslových oblastí“, se nazastavuje ani před těmi nejtěžšími otázkami intepretace „pocitu, projevujícího se hapticky, nebo transcendentní odhmotněné světelné vize, nespatřitelné zrakem“. Jak praví Srp: „Malich chtěl uchopit svět se ,vším sakumprásk?.“

Jozef Jankovič (1937 - 2017) je nepochybne najvýznamnejší slovenský sochár 20. storočia. Kniha Všetko je v hlave pripomína nielen jeho výnimočné dielo a osobnosť, ale do hĺbky mapuje tú časť umelcovej tvorby, ktorú venoval tematike hlavy. „Koruna tela" sa preňho stala svojráznou scénou malých životných banalít, ľudských i spoločenských drám, komédií i tragikomédií, ktoré nestrácajú na aktuálnosti. Hlavy u Jankoviča zväčša nemajú tvár, sú to skôr busty, masky-profily, ktorým bol síce odopretý zázrak videnia, ale v ich tvaroch a siluetách sa odohrávajú neočakávané a prekvapivé deje. Umelec nimi zvláštnym spôsobom komentuje naše osobné i historické komplexy, víťazstvá a zlyhania, individuálnu i kolektívnu skúsenosť. Zároveň sú akýmsi záznamom jeho novátorského myslenia, premenlivosti foriem, techník a rukopisu v čase. V graficky pôsobivej knihe nájde čitateľ viacero doteraz nepublikovaných a menej známych diel sochára.

O máloktorom stredoeurópskom sochárovi 18. storočia sa nám zachovalo toľko správ ako o F. X. Messerschmidtovi (1736 – 1783). Napriek tomu jeho postava, opradená tajuplnými historkami a často protirečivými súdmi, zostáva stále záhadná. Jeho život je úzko spätý so zvláštnymi hlavami, známymi ako „charakterové hlavy“. Práci na týchto hlavách, ktoré si nikto neobjednal, venoval v posledných rokoch života väčšinu svojho času. Je to jedinečná, v dejinách sochárstva neopakovateľná séria, ktorá založila Messerschmidtovu slávu a zatlačila do úzadia celú jeho ostatnú tvorbu. Provokovala k tým najrozličnejším výkladom. Čo vlastne majú tieto hlavy s grimasami vyjadriť? Sú ozvenou na snahy osvietencov pochopiť ľudskú individualitu? Alebo sú prejavom kritického postoja umelca k spoločnosti, ktorej sa vysmieva? Odzrkadľujú ich skrivené črty hysterické stavy pacientov módneho doktora a hypnotizéra F. A. Mesmera? Alebo boli tieto hlavy nástrojom v rukách psychózou postihnutého umelca pri jeho boji o zachovanie životnej rovnováhy? Ponúkajú sa mnohé vysvetlenia, odborníci sa dodnes snažia o jednoznačnú, všeobecne prijateľnú odpoveď. Posledná kapitola Messerschmidtovho života sa odohrala v Bratislave a tu leží aj pochovaný. Po tom, čo počiatočné úspechy vo Viedni vystriedalo neporozumenie a neúspech, našiel nové útočisko vo vtedy kvitnúcom hlavnom meste Uhorska. Bol opäť uznávaným umelcom a vytvoril tu aj väčšinu svojich „charakterových hláv“. Ešte počas života sa stal legendárnou postavou. Ako čudesný prelud žije v povedomí bratislavčanov dodnes.

Sculptural and photographic transformations of the domestic, the industrial, the functional and the decorative Renowned for her particular take on what contemporary sculpture can be and express, Magali Reus (born 1981) draws on a vast range of formal influences and references, from the domestic to the industrial, the functional to the decorative, creating works that evolve as a fascinating accumulation and layering of visual details. Designed by Irma Boom, this artist’s book offers a unique approach to art making through the unveiling of the sources, visual imagery and connections that gave birth to the realization of three emblematic series by Magali Reus: Dearest (2018); Empty Every Night (2019); and Settings (2019–21). Conceived as a space where the viewer can take their time to get a closer, more intimate connection to her work, the publication alternates views of the works, close-up details and various materials—from a 3D technical rendering and production calculations to mock ups, samples and research photography. Sharing her production, process and research archive, Reus allows the reader to decipher the circulation of motifs from one medium to another, her specific take on the ideas of hierarchy, representation and systems of production, and how she explores the tensions between nature, technology and the impact of postindustrial human activity. The book gives full credit to her ongoing thinking on objecthood and how the objects and forms she creates take on a strange, disobedient agency. Made of three separate volumes. featuring different paper and taped together, this collectible publication is itself a powerful object.

Publikace doprovází stejnojmennou výstavu, kterou Kunsthalle Praha pořádá v období 2023/2024, přičemž jde o první větší prezentaci uměleckého dua Elmgreen & Dragset v Česku. Výstava READ reflektuje vztah mezi knihami a uměleckou tvorbou. Svým pojetím v podobě minimalistické verze moderní veřejné knihovny rovněž tematizuje náš vztah k fyzickým knihám a vědění v éře digitálních médií. Mezi na míru vyrobenými knihovními regály – a také na nich – v galerijním prostoru představují Elmgreen & Dragset nové či nedávno vytvořené sochy společně s díly několika současných umělkyň a umělců a také některými zásadními díly ze sbírek Kunsthalle Praha. Výstava zahrnuje performance, videa, koláže a malby, ale také sochy a instalace. Rozsáhlá doprovodná publikace obsahuje příspěvky od renomovaných odborníků a odbornic i kurátorský text dvojice Elmgreen & Dragset a věnuje se rozmanitým tématům od historie českého samizdatu až po současné výzvy pro knihy, knihovny a svobodu slova v digitální éře. Tento bohatě ilustrovaný katalog dokumentuje výstavu a její zaměření na dynamický vztah mezi jazykem, knihami a uměním.

Publikace Vesmír v hlavě předkládá obraz umělecké tvorby slovenské sochařky Pavly Scerankové v posledním desetiletí. Prostřednictvím textů britské kritičky Chloe Stead a českého kurátora Jana Zálešáka je rozvrstvena do tematických kapitol, které přináší vhled do autorčina bohatého sochařského a vizuálního jazyka. Pavla Sceranková (*1980) přináší do oblasti sochařské a objektové tvorby nový autorský jazyk a výraz; novou koncepci, navazující na silný odkaz postmoderního, ale zároveň i neokonceptuálního prostorového umění. Vytváří sochařské objekty a instalace vyznačující se minimalistickou čistotou a citlivým vztahem k danému místu. Jinou polohou její tvorby je vytváření objektů, v nichž je zakomponován prvek akce, které vyzývají diváka k interakci. Někdy nabývají podoby videa, či spíše videosochy, která stojí na pomezí performance, animované sochy a autonomního videa. Vyjadřují existenciální vztah člověka k prostředí, ve kterém žije a se kterým se konfrontuje. V obsahové rovině se Pavla Sceranková intenzivně zabývá reflexí lidského vnímání, pamětí a individuálním prožíváním okolního světa. Vychází z osobního prožitku a zkoumá způsob, jak se tento prožitek uchoval v paměti, respektive jaký tvar nabyl. Autorka tematizuje fenomén vnímání, prožívání aktu vnímání, vztah vnímání ke vnímanému světu a vědomí aktu vnímání. Studovala v letech 2000–2006 na Akademii výtvarných umění v Praze, kde v roce 2011 úspěšně ukončila doktorské studium. V rámci stipendijních pobytů absolvovala roční stáž u prof. Tony Gragga v Berlíně. V letech 2010–2015 působila jako akademický pracovník na Katedře výtvarné výchovy a textilní tvorby Univerzity Hradec Králové. V současné době vede s Dušanem Zahoranským vlastní Ateliér intermediální tvorby na pražské Akademii výtvarných umění. Autorkou grafického designu je Adéla Svobodová. Kniha vychází v česko-anglické verzi.
