The development of painting in London from the Second World War to the 1970s is the story of interlinking friendships, shared experiences and artistic concerns among a number of acclaimed artists, including Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Frank Auerbach, David Hockney, Bridget Riley, Gillian Ayres, Frank Bowling and Howard Hodgkin.
Drawing on extensive first-hand interviews, many previously unpublished, with important witnesses and participants, the art critic Martin Gayford teases out the thread connecting these individual lives, and demonstrates how painting thrived in London against the backdrop of Soho bohemia in the 1940s and 1950s and `Swinging London' in the 1960s. Edgar Degas: Drawings and Pastels
Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was one of the outstanding draughtsmen of the 19th century and drawing was not only a central tenet of his art but also essential to his existence. Through an examination of the artists drawings and pastels, Christopher Lloyd reveals the development of Degas' style as well the story of his life, including his complicated relationship with the Impressionists. Quentin Blake - A Year of Drawings

Quentin Blake, like many illustrators, works essentially in isolation. In normal times he would make two daily trips to his office across the square from where he lives to see what business there was for him to deal with. But during the lockdowns he had no such distractions and demands made of his time. There was still some commissioned works; he finished two books and he did some work for charities raising funds to deal with the lockdowns. But Quentin had a lot more time to explore his visual interests and go wherever his imagination took him.
Some of these series were drawn at 6.00 am while he was still in bed. The medium he used for each series was partly decided by whatever was to hand; pencil, biro or Sennelier oil pastels. Similarly, the size, colour and quality of the paper would be decided by what was available.
This book is an edited selection of over 3,000 drawings Quentin produced from March 2020 to February 2021; a portfolio of new personal work, not commissioned and not meant for publication. They provide a unique insight into what happens when a great artist is left to his own devices.

„Obrazy jsou jména toho, co nedokážeme pojmenovat,“ říká Miroslav Petříček, filosof, pedagog a překladatel, který se zabývá reflexí vizuálního umění už několik desetiletí. Své postřehy shrnul mimo jiné v knize Myšlení obrazem. Průvodce současným filosofickým myšlením pro středně nepokročilé (2009), která se stala předobrazem výstavy v Galerii hlavního města Prahy (2023). Hlavní ideou výstavy i její doprovodné publikace se stal předpoklad, že setkání s obrazem je především vizuální událostí. Záměrem je ukázat, že jazyky slov a obrazů jsou si blízké, ale jejich materiál je odlišný: obraz či výraz nelze jednoduše překládat do pojmů. Obraz nic nepředvádí, nýbrž cosi způsobuje. Není jen ilustrací ani vizuálním zprostředkováním myšlenky, nýbrž specifickým způsobem, jak podnítit myšlení – myslet namalované. Myšlení obrazem je pak odpovědí na setkání s vizuální událostí. Pětice autorů (Miroslav Petříček, Jitka Hlaváčková, Milena Bartlová, Jiří Přibáň a Václav Janoščík) v dialogu s díly více než čtyřiceti výtvarných umělců představila své postoje k jazyku vizuálního umění, jeho historii i žhavé současnosti balancující na hranici reálných a digitálně manipulovaných smyslových vjemů. Společně s autorskou dokumentací fotografa Jiřího Thýna provádí čtenáře labyrintem vizuálních událostí od abstraktního smyslového vjemu přes hledání tvaru a pojmu až po konstruování ideje: od tajemných hranic chaosu a řádu nebo světla a tmy k metaobrazům současného světa.
