Clint Eastwood (USA, born 1930) is a veteran among the grand masters of contemporary American cinema, whose rise through the system took a highly unusual form. After playing iconic roles in Sergio Leone's spaghetti westerns of the 1960s, he returned to Hollywood and underwent a controversial reincarnation as the ultraviolent cop Harry.

Rene Redzepi has been widely credited with re-inventing Nordic cuisine. Each film will be illustrated by sequences of films stills as well as sketches, location scouting shots and storyboards. Finally, at the end of the book, each curator will select one cultural reference from varying genres and media to illustrate the context in which film directors operate today. The book will include a short biography for each film director and each curator. The result is unique source book, a fresh and up-to-the-minute collection of the best global and regional cinematographic creations in all fictional genre - drama, crime, horror, fantasy, science-fiction - around the world. Criteria for selection: each curator (nominators) will select ten film directors and one long feature film which the d irector made, produced and distributed in the last five years. Jeff Wall (b.1946) adopts the nineteenth-century poet Baudelaire's famous description of one of his contemporaries as 'a painter of modern life' to describe his own very different work: huge transparencies mounted on to light boxes that diffuse a brilliant glow of white light evenly through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations. Wall is foremost among the pioneering artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. His constructed images employ the latest sophisticated technology in the creation of compelling tableaux, which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When exhibited in their glowing light boxes they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures such as Dan Flavin's fluorescent light installations or Donald Judd's metal and Perspex wall reliefs.
