Matisse - Cut-Outs
A perfect synthesis of color and line.
The trailblazing paper cut-outs of Henri Matisse.
When Henri Matisse (1869 1954) was forced to give up painting in the mid-1940s due to a serious illness, he began to work with painted paper and a pair of scissors, "carving into color" to create bright, bold patterns and forms.
Though many critics at the time were unstinting in their cruel remarks about the supposed foolishness of an old man, the work, termed gouaches découpées ( gouache cut-outs ), in fact represented a milestone in modern art. Matisse had not only defied frailty to pursue his artistic impetus, he had also created a whole new medium for exploring the age-old conflict between color and line.
This 96-page, hardcover edition includes rich image reproductions from many of Matisse's most celebrated cut-outs,and a detailed biography for context of the artist's life and work.

Michelangelo Complete Works
Il divino. This is a glorious exploration of Michelangelo's works. Before reaching the tender age of thirty, Michelangelo Buonarroti (1475-1564) had already sculpted "David" and "Pieta", two of the most famous sculptures in the entire history of art. His achievements as a sculptor, painter, draughtsman, and architect are unique - no artist before or after him has ever produced such a vast, multi-faceted, and wide-ranging oeuvre. This is demonstrated not only by the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel but also by Michelangelo's monumental sculptures and his unconventional architectural designs, whose forms went far beyond the accepted vocabulary of his day. Such was his renown that Michelangelo was the subject of two biographics during his lifetime. TASCHEN brings you this comprehensive two-volume edition that explores Michelangelo's life and work in more depth and detail than ever before. The first volume concentrates on the life of Michelangelo via an extensive and copiously illustrated biographical essay; the main body of the book presents his work in four parts providing a complete analytical inventory of Michelangelo's paintings, sculptures, buildings and drawings. Gorgeous, full page reproductions and enlarged details bring readers up close to the works. This sumptuous book also takes account, to a previously unseen extent, of Michelangelo's more personal traits and circumstances, such as his solitary nature, his thirst for money and commissions, his miserliness, his immense wealth, and his skill as a property investor. In addition, the book tackles the controversial issue of the attribution of Michelangelo drawings, an area in which decisions continue to be steered by the interests of the art market and the major collections. This is the definitive work about Michelangelo for generations to come.

The Curse of Lono
The Curse of Lono is to Hawaii what Fear and Loathing was to Las Vegas: a journalist’s news event “coverage” that ends up an unclassifiable twist of fiction and reportage, myth and crazed surrealism. Featuring all of the zany, hallucinogenic wordplay and feral artwork for which the Hunter S. Thompson/Ralph Steadman duo became known and loved, the book was at once their exemplary and most eccentric output. The original edition of The Curse of Lono, published 1983, had long been out of print when TASCHEN brought out a signed, limited re-edition almost a decade ago. The book sold out before it even hit the stores. Now available as a standard TASCHEN edition, this fresh, smaller format, makes the gonzo masterpiece accessible to everyone.

25 Tom of Finland, Complete Kake Comics
Mustaches and muscles: Back to the days when men were men and sex was carefree In 1965, Tom of Finland began flirting with the idea of an ongoing character for his panel stories, the ultimate Tom s Man. He tried out a blond named Vicky a common male name in Finland followed by a Tarzan-inspired Jack. Then in 1968 Tom settled on Kake, a dark-haired, mustached leatherman who often wore a tight white T-shirt bearing the motto Fucker. Kake lived up to this moniker, a sort of post-Stonewall, hyper-masculine Johnny Appleseed traveling the world on his motorcycle to spread the seeds of liberated, mutually satisfying, ecstatically explicit gay sex. Tom lived out many of his most personal fantasies through Kake, and Kake s international fans made him the template for what came to be known as the gay clone look of the 1970s. Between 1968 and 1986, Tom published 26 episodes of Kake adventures, most as 20-page booklets. Tom of Finland The Complete Kake Comics collects all of these stories in one volume. Return with Kake to the days when men were men, sex was carefree, and everyone wore a big thick mustache."

Lacná kniha Matisse Cut-outs (-86%)
Drawing with scissors: The revolutionary late-period work by Matisse Towards the end of his monumental career as a painter, sculptor, and lithographer, an elderly, sickly Matisse was unable to stand and use a paintbrush for a longer period of time. In this late phase of his life he was almost 80 years of age he developed the technique of carving into color, creating bright, bold paper cut-outs. Though dismissed by some contemporary critics as the folly of a senile old man, these gouaches decoupees (gouache cut-outs) in fact represented a revolution in modern art, a whole new medium that re-imagined the age-old conflict between color and line. This fresh, standard TASCHEN edition of our original prize-winning XL volume provides a thorough historical context to Matisse s cut-outs, tracing their roots in his 1930 trip to Tahiti, through to his final years in Nice. It includes many photos of Matisse, some rare color images, by Henri Cartier-Bresson, Brassai, and the filmmaker Murnau and text from Matisse, Picasso, publisher E. Teriade, the poets Louis Aragon, Henri Michaux, and Pierre Reverdy, and Matisse s son-in-law, Georges Duthuit. In their deceptive simplicity, the cut-outs achieved both a sculptural quality and an early minimalist abstraction which would profoundly influence generations of artists to come. Exuberant, multi-hued, and often grand in scale, these works are true pillars of 20th century art, and as bold and innovative to behold today as they were in Matisse s lifetime."

25 Art, El Greco
A prophet of modernism. Strong colours and sinuous figures El Greco (1541-1614) was born Domenikos Theotokopoulos in Crete in 1541. He arrived in Venice in 1566, where his work was greatly influenced by Titian and Tintoretto. Later he made an offer to the Pope to paint over Michelangelo's "Last Judgement" in the spirit of the Counter Reformation, which so incurred the wrath of Roman artists that a career in Italy was no longer conceivable. El Greco then settled in Spain, in Toledo, where he received numerous commissions from the Church and the nobility. Between 1586 and 1588 he created a major work of European painting, the monumental "Burial of the Count of Orgaz" for a chapel altar in the parish church of Santo Tome in Toledo. El Greco confined his range of colours to a small number of very expressively used shades, with an evident preference for pale purple, pink, and yellow and greyish tones. He located the iconographical events in a space that he dramatized by means of light and atmospheric phenomena. His oeuvre had a wide-ranging impact on art up to and including modern 20th century painting. Paul Cezanne and later Picasso and the Expressionists regarded El Greco as a prophet of modernism.About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions.

25 Art, Rembrandt
The mystery of the revealed form: A mirror of the artistic and intellectual developments of the 17th century Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn (1606-1669) was one of the most complex and multi-faceted artists of the 17th century. From his initial period in Leiden to his early and late phases in Amsterdam, the stages of Rembrandt's career mirror the artistic and intellectual developments of the century. After breaking off his studies in Leiden, the young Rembrandt trained as a painter for two years and eventually established his own painting workshop. Characteristic of the Leiden period are his biblical histories, such as "The Raising of Lazarus," but the roots of Rembrandt's portraiture, nourished by his intensive studies of physiognomy, also are to be found in these same years. Later, in Amsterdam, the perfection of Rembrandt's likenesses initially won him the favor of numerous patrons--but the artist soon surpassed their expectations. Transcending traditional modes of presentation, Rembrandt composed his portraits in the same manner in which he had earlier constructed his scenes. The results are visible, for example, in the famous group portrait "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp" from 1632. In the last phase of Rembrandt's work--when, plagued by financial problems, he had withdrawn into seclusion--it is no longer possible to distinguish between event paintings and portraits.About the Series: Each book in TASCHEN's Basic Art Series features: a detailed chronological summary of the life and oeuvre of the artist, covering his or her cultural and historical importance a concise biography approximately 100 colour illustrations with explanatory captions.

Annie Leibovitz - Whoopi Goldberg Collector’s Edition
When Benedikt Taschen asked the most important portrait photographer working today to collect her pictures in a SUMO-sized book, she was intrigued and challenged. The project took several years to develop and proved to be revelatory. Annie Leibovitz drew from over 40 years of work, starting with the viscerally intimate reportage she created for Rolling Stone magazine in the 1970s and extending through the more stylized portraiture of her work for Vanity Fair and Vogue. Celebrated images such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono entwined in a last embrace are printed alongside portraits that have rarely, and sometimes never before, been seen. Annie Leibovitz was able to present some of her famous group portraits in a format that proves that she is the master of the genre. Her pictures are at once intimate and iconic, wide-ranging stylistically and also uniquely hers. Annie Leibovitz is often imitated, particularly by younger photographers, but her work is somehow immediately recognizable.
The bookends of the Leibovitz collection are the black-and-white photograph of Richard Nixon's helicopter lifting off from the White House lawn after he resigned as president in 1974 and the formal color portrait of Queen Elizabeth II taken in a drawing room of Buckingham Palace in 2007. In between are portraits that make up a family album of our time: actors, dancers, comedians, musicians, artists, writers, performance artists, journalists, athletes, businesspeople. Performance and power are recurring themes. A supplementary book contains essays by Annie Leibovitz, Graydon Carter, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Paul Roth and short texts describing the subjects of each of the over 250 photographs.
The Collector's Edition is available in four different dust jackets:
1. Whoopi Goldberg, Berkeley, California, 1984
2. Keith Haring, New York City, 1986
3. David Byrne, Los Angeles, 1986
4. Patti Smith, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1978
Limited to a total of 10,000 signed and numbered copies, this book is available as Collector's Edition (No. 1,001-10,000) and also as Art Edition (No. 1-1,000) with a fine art print, signed by Annie Leibovitz, and the full set of all four dust jackets.
Both editions come with a tripod book stand designed by Marc Newson.
