Komiksové zpracování jednoho z nejvýznamnějších románů dvacátého století vypráví příběh tichého úředníka Mersaulta, který v Alžíru krátce po pohřbu své matky nešťastnou náhodou zabije Araba. U soudu hájí svoji pravdu a odmítá nařčení, že je bezcitný a lhostejný. Mersault je nakonec odsouzen, ale nikoliv ani tak za vraždu, ale proto, že podle výpovědi svědků neplakal na pohřbu své matky.

Pád (1956) je poslední velkou prózou Alberta Camuse. Původně měl být zařazen do povídkové sbírky Exil a království, vzhledem k neustále se rozšiřujícímu obsahu díla se však spisovatel rozhodl povýšit jej na román a publikovat odděleně. Pád je jedinou Camusovou prózou, do jejíhož hrdiny vložil autobiografické prvky, přestože sklon pokoutního advokáta Clamence vynášet nad lidmi soud autorovi rozhodně vlastní nebyl, stejně jako neschopnost poznat a analyzovat vlastní vinu. Clamence nepřispěje na pomoc tonoucí sebevražedkyni jako člověk revolutující nemůže své provinění omluvit ani odpykat, protože nemá Boha ani budoucnost, která by mu dala rozhřešení. Mytický ráz předešlých románů se rozhodl Camus v Pádu nahradit dušezpytným ponorem, neboť si, jak sám napsal v Zápisníku, předsevzal postihnout lež, což je rozpor mezi vnějším projevem a skrytým životem člověka.
