In January 1936, the thirty-two-year-old George Orwell left his home in London and travelled to the industrial north of England with the intention of experiencing first-hand the conditions in which the working-class poor were compelled to live their lives. During his two-month expedition he visited Manchester, Wigan and Liverpool in the north-west, then Sheffield, Leeds and Barnsley in Yorkshire, recording his impressions as he went in a diary that would later form the basis of one of the most significant works of literary reportage ever written.
Part sociological survey, part polemic about the potential benefits of socialism - as well as the failures and idiosyncrasies of many of its middle-class exponents - The Road to Wigan Pier represents a unique record of a country riven by class inequality and plagued by unemployment, inadequate housing, unsafe working conditions and other social ills, and provides an invaluable insight into the evolution of Orwell's political consciousness.

Román Vlny, ktorý prvýkrát vyšiel v roku 1931, patrí medzi najvýraznejšie experimentálne texty Virginie Woolfovej. Vlny sú polyfonickou fúziou vnútorných monológov šiestich hlavných postáv Bernarda, Susan, Rhody, Louisa, Jinny a Nevilla. Spoznávame ich útržkovite v intimite ich vnútorných monológov a sledujeme ich od detských čias, cez spoločné školské roky až po úlomky z obdobia ich stredného veku. Hoci pochádzajú z rôznych prostredí a majú veľmi odlišné osobnosti, jednako sa celý život schádzajú, rozchádzajú, pozorujú a porovnávajú. Veľmi dôležitou je v texte tiež postava Percivala, ktorý nikdy neprehovorí, ale ktorého prítomnosť má na všetkých šiestich silný vplyv.
Experimentálna forma a naoko chaotické striedanie hlasov ponúkajú len krehké oporné body. Čitateľ sa stráca pod rozčerenou hladinou textu, aby sa o pár strán vynoril v rytmickom unášaní vĺn života. Tie sa tvoria, pretvárajú, miznú, aby sa v okamihu znova vytvorili, pretvorili a opäť zmizli. Virginii Woolfovej sa tak podarilo zachytiť nielen prchavosť okamihu, ale aj pravidelný rytmus a prúdenie plynúceho času.
