V znalostnej spoločnosti bývajú zdôrazňované prvky ako otvorenosť, kreativita, flexibilita a rozmanitosť. Rozdielnosť v týchto parametroch pozorujeme pri porovnaní starých a nových členských krajín EÚ. Vo vyspelých ekonomikách je rozmanitosť aktérov výrazne vyššia ako v menej vyspelých ekonomikách. Staré členské krajiny, okrem Grécka a čiastočne Portugalska, majú vyspelé hospodárske štruktúry. Väčšina nových členských krajín musela prejsť transformáciou z centrálne plánovaných na trhové ekonomiky a ich nižšia ekonomická výkonnosť súvisí s horšími podmienkami pre oblasť výskumu a inovácií. Publikácia ukazuje, že oproti hospodársky vyspelejším krajinám je u nás značne nižší podiel účasti firemného sektora na financovaní výskumu a vývoja. Nevyvážená vlastnícka štruktúra firiem s vysokým podielom firiem so zahraničnými vlastníkmi prispieva k oslabovaniu domáceho inovačného potenciálu. Konkurencieschopnosť väčšiny firiem v SR je podložená inovatívnymi riešeniami, ktoré boli vyvinuté v zahraničí. Pri premene tradičného ekonomického systému na znalostnú spoločnosť je nutné rešpektovať širšie spoločenské súvislosti v komplexnom prostredí. Základná mapa priestoru identifikácie kľúčových zmien sumarizuje použité prístupy - paralelné fázovanie, kombinované využívanie znalostných základní, platformy príbuznej rozmanitosti, integráciu fyzického, kyberfyzického a digitálneho priestoru. Na potrebu zmeny vnímania nových procesov poukazuje porovnanie tradičného prístupu k formovaniu cieľov s novým prístupom k ťažko riešiteľným problémom. Publikácia sa zameriava na potenciál dôležitých kategórií ľudských zdrojov perspektívnych pre dynamizáciu znalostnej spoločnosti, ako sú študenti, mladí výskumníci a ženy.
