It all started with a book that made me curious.
When rare books dealer Rebecca Romney found an emerald clothbound edition of Evelina by Frances Burney, she was happy to discover that she'd stumbled across a novel by one of Jane Austen's favourite authors. Inspired by the connection between the two writers, she returned to Austen's books with a new lens, picking out clues sprinkled throughout her works that pointed to the writers she had admired.
Austen read William Shakespeare, John Milton, Daniel Defoe, and Samuel Richardson, all authors Rebecca had read. But Austen also read Frances Burney, Ann Radcliffe, Charlotte Lennox, Hannah More, Charlotte Smith, Elizabeth Inchbald, Hester Piozzi, and Maria Edgeworth, all authors Romney hadn't. These female writers all sat proudly on Austen's bookshelf, but have disappeared from ours.
Romney became fascinated with these writers and wanted to answer three important questions: What were the stories behind the lives of these women? Why have they disappeared from our bookshelves? Who wrote them out of history? She had a mission, an obligation: she needed to collect Jane Austen's bookshelf.

Témy, ktorým sa venujú sú primárne pracovné, podrobne reflektujú politické a národnostné okolnosti v Uhorsku, stav slovenskej cirkvi a politických elít, ale aj situáciu v Muzeálnej slovenskej spoločnosti. Obsah zozbieraných listov dokladuje, že autori sa pri ich písaní na nič nehrali, boli k sebe úplne otvorení a neraz zanechali aj úprimné svedectvá o negatívach dobových slovenských národovcov, vedcoch, politikov či cirkevných predstaviteľov. Kniha tak približuje detaily aj o každodennej vedeckej, národnej a pastoračnej práci oboch aktérov a dovolí nazrieť do ich súkromia.

Hans Asperger, priekopník výskumu autizmu a Aspergerovho syndrómu v nacistickej Viedni, bol vážený a oslavovaný pre svoju súcitnú obranu detí s mentálnym postihnutím. V prelomovej knihe Aspergerove deti však oceňovaná historička Edith Sheffer odhaľuje, že Asperger sa nielenže podieľal na rasovej politike Hitlerovej Tretej ríše, ale bol aj spoluvinníkom vraždenia detí.
Keď nacistický režim počas druhej svetovej vojny vyvraždil milióny ľudí v celej Európe, selektoval ich podľa rasy, náboženstva, správania a fyzického stavu, aby ich buď liečil, alebo likvidoval. Nacistickí psychiatri sa zameriavali na deti s rôznym typom myslenia – najmä na tie, o ktorých si mysleli, že im chýbajú sociálne zručnosti – a tvrdili, že v Ríši pre ne nie je miesto. Göring a psychiater - Osudové stretnutia s nacistickým zločincom
Keď po svojom zajatí na konci druhej svetovej vojny prišiel ríšsky maršal Hermann Göring do amerického detenčného centra v Luxembursku, mal so sebou šestnásť kufrov a červenú krabicu s klobúkmi. V batožine si okrem iného priniesol medaily, drahokamy, dva nože na cigary, hodvábnu spodnú bielizeň a hotovosť v hodnote jedného milióna dolárov. Do plechovky od kávy ukryl mosadzné fľaštičky so sklenenými kapsulami, ktoré obsahovali smrteľne jedovatý kyanid draselný.
Ku Göringovi sa postupne pripojili predstavitelia elity nacistického režimu, ktorí sa pred tribunálom v Norimbergu mali zodpovedať za vojnové zločiny. O to, aby boli prominentní zajatci spôsobilí postaviť sa pred súd, sa mal postarať kapitán Douglas M. Kelley. Ambiciózny armádny psychiater si myslel, že sa mu núka jedinečná príležitosť objaviť u týchto arcizločincov charakteristickú črtu, ktorá by ich psychologicky odlišovala od zvyšku ľudstva.
Lenže aj zlo má svoj šarm a pátranie po jeho podstate nabralo nečakaný rozmer, keď si Kelley vytvoril s Göringom blízky vzťah. Kniha vychádza z Kelleyho rozsiahlej zbierky osobných i profesionálnych dokumentov vrátane lekárskych záznamov obžalovaných nacistov, ktoré boli desaťročia ukryté.
