Herodotove Dejiny predstavujú prvé zachované historiografické dielo európskej kultúry.
I názov pre výskum minulosti – história – pochádza z Herodotovho úvodu, v ktorom sa zaviazal, že zaznamená správy o slávnych činoch Grékov a barbarov. Herodotos však spravil viac. Na základe dobovej gréckej vedy a náboženských predstáv prepojil vojenské udalosti s rozprávaním o raste Perzskej ríše a zvykoch ostatných barbarských národov.
