Málokterá problematika dějin amerického kontinentu přitahuje takovou pozornost české veřejnosti jako otázka vztahů mezi Indiány a bílým obyvatelstvem Ameriky, kromě jiného tvořící součást historie tzv. Divokého západu. Indiánské války sedmdesátých a osmdesátých let devatenáctého století byly završením procesu, jenž začal už objevením Ameriky či přinejmenším založením prvních anglických kolonií a znamenal nahrazování lovu, sběru a primitivního zemědělství zemědělstvím intenzívním, popřípadě jinými ekonomickými aktivitami. Velká siouxská válka, jejíž součástí byla bitva u Little Bighornu, kde utrpěla americká armáda největší porážku v bojích s Indiány, pak může sloužit v mnoha ohledech jako názorná ukázka způsobu válčení i výsledků střetnutí. Přinesla relativně malé ztráty na životech, přitom však dalekosáhlé změny pro poražené. Z plání přilehlých hor zmizeli indiánští lovci a přišli horníci, farmáři a chovatelé dobytka. Sedící býk, vítěz nad Custerem, odešel do Kanady a vrátil se k vystupování ve sbírce kuriozit. Jeho smrt v roce 1890 pak symbolizuje definitivní konec jednoho období dějin amerického kontinentu.

Ruský imperialismus
K obhajobě své imperialistické politiky Vladimir Putin pravidelně využívá minulost. Rusko představuje jako říši, které je potřeba navrátit její dávnou slávu a „původní“ území. Jaká je ale historie ruského imperialismu?
Tato kniha ukazuje, jak ruské vládnoucí elity v posledních dvou staletích využívaly architekturu, obrazy i vědu k opakovanému „znovuvytváření“ příběhu impéria. Historie, na kterou se odvolávaly, však byla z velké části vykonstruovaná. Ústřední roli v ní hrála Byzantská říše, jejíž následnictví i území si Rusko nárokovalo. Most mezi středověkou minulostí a současností nacházeli ideologové ruského imperialismu v pravoslaví.
A paradoxně — stejný příběh sloužil velmi odlišným režimům: posledním Romanovcům, Stalinovi a dnes i Putinovi. Zásadní otázkou zůstává, zda tento příběh, opakovaně znetvořený propagandou, odpovídá skutečnosti. A co nám vlastně říká o Rusku samotném?
Witchcraft
A lively and immersive global history of witchcraft which shows its evolution from the Middle Ages to the present day and shines a light on the stories of the victims, told in thirteen trials.
Salem, King James VI, Malleus Maleficarum. The world of witch hunts and witch trials sounds antiquated, relics of an unenlightened and brutal age. However, 'witch hunt' is heard often in the present-day media, and the misogyny it is rooted in is all too familiar today. A woman was prosecuted under the 1735 Witchcraft Act as recently as 1944.
This book uses thirteen significant trials to explore the history of witchcraft and witch hunts. As well as investigating some of the most famous trials from the middle ages to the 18th century, it takes us in new and surprising directions. It shows us how witchcraft was decriminalised in the 18th century, only to be reimagined by the 1780s Romantic radicals. We will learn how it evolved from being seen as a threat to Christianity to perceived as gendered persecution, and how trials against chieftains in Africa stoked anger against colonial rule.
Significantly, the book tells the stories of the victims - women, such as Helena Scheuberin and Joan Wright - whose stories have too often been overshadowed by those of the powerful men, such as King James VI and I and “Witchfinder General” Matthew Hopkins, who hounded them.
While this will be a history of witchcraft, the subject cannot be consigned to the history books. Hundreds of people, mostly women, are tried and killed as witches every year in Africa. ‘WITCH HUNT!’ is as common in our language today as ever it was, and witches are still on trial across the world.

A kollektivizálás egyike volt a huszadik század legnagyobb horderejű társadalmi eseményeinek. Az államosítás után Magyarországon a parasztság maradt az utolsó olyan társadalmi réteg, amely földtulajdonának köszönhetően valódi gazdasági autonómiával rendelkezett. A szovjet modellt követő magyar kommunisták csak 1961-re, két hullámban tudták végleg megtörni és kolhozokba kényszeríteni a családokat, amelyek rengeteget szenvedtek az önállóságukért.
A könyv az ország 1945-ben meginduló szovjetizálásától, ezen belül pedig a földosztástól a hetvenes évekig tekinti át a magyarországi falvakat felforgató, azokat végérvényesen átalakító eseményeket és folyamatokat. A vidék életét meghatározó tényezők közül a kollektivizálás a leglátványosabb, de legalább ennyire fontos volt a téeszekben dolgozók folyamatos elvándorlást generáló hátrányos megkülönböztetése a társadalombiztosításban, és a falvaknak morzsákat is alig juttató településpolitika.
Csikós Gábor, Horváth Gergely Krisztián és Ö. Kovács József történészek, a kötet szerkesztői nagy hangsúlyt fektettek arra, hogy munkájukat olyan forrásokra építsék, amelyek a társadalom mindennapi tapasztalatait tükrözik. A fejezetekből nemcsak a kollektivizálás traumatikus folyamata rajzolódik ki a maga életszerűségében, de a mentális egészségre hosszú távon gyakorolt rendkívül negatív hatása is. A szovjetizálás társadalmi és környezeti ára külföldi összehasonlításban különösen szembetűnő.

1971. július 17-én Egil "Bud" Krogh-t zárt ajtók mögötti találkozóra rendelte mentora - és az elnök kulcsszerepet játszó bizalmasa -, John Ehrlichman. Krogh, aki arra számított, hogy a Vietnamban beindított legfrissebb drogellenőrzési programot fogják megvitatni, megdöbbent, amikor Ehrlichman átadott neki egy dossziét, és megbízta a később "Vízvezeték-szerelők" néven elhíresült Különleges Nyomozó Egység, a SIU vezetésével.
A Vízvezeték-szerelők munkája Nixon szerint nemzetbiztonsági szempontból kritikus jelentőséggel bírt: nekik kellett kivizsgálniuk a szigorúan titkos kormányzati dokumentumok, köztük a Pentagon-iratok kiszivárogtatását a sajtó részére. Němečtí liberálové nacistům vydláždili cestu k moci – tak lze ve zkratce přetlumočit tezi, kterou v hojně diskutované knize Cena vyloučení obhajuje americký historik Eric Kurlander. Německé liberální strany postupně akceptovaly rasistický Weltanschauung, konkurenční koncepci liberálněuniversalistického Rechtsstaatu v průběhu let odsouvaly do pozadí a nakonec ji odložily docela. Kurlander si všímá i výjimek, přičemž některé jsou obzvláště pozoruhodné a pro pochopení celkového kontextu cenné, jeho závěr je však přesto jasný i neúprosný: hlavní liberální proud ovládla obsese rasistickým společenstvím, krví, půdou, ale i mnoha dalšími kategoriemi, kterými se později vyznačoval Hitlerův národní socialismus.

Russia
