3. 7. 1866 - Bitva u Hradce Králové
Bitva u Hradce Králové (nebo také u Sadové či na Chlumu) ze dne 3. července 1866 zaujímá v českém dějepisectví poněkud rozporuplné postavení. Na jedné straně bývá označována za druhou největší bitvu 19. století, resp. největší bitvu, která se odehrála na českém území, je v ní též spatřován začátek cesty, která dovedla Evropu k hrůzám první a druhé světové války. Na druhou stranu bývá válka z roku 1866 rámována jako „válka Němců s Němci“, válka, která se prohnala českými zeměmi a v níž Češi krváceli a umírali za cizí zájmy, aniž by se jim dostalo vděku, jehož se v podobě rakousko- -uherského vyrovnání dočkali Maďaři. Oficiálně se tak bitva u Hradce Králové nestala součástí českého dějinného příběhu, jak byl od sklonku 19. století vyprávěn. S tím však kontrastuje neutuchající zájem širokých občanských vrstev o dějiny válečného roku 1866 a památky tyto dějiny připomínající, který ve východních Čechách vyústil snad až ve formování jisté lokální identity. Autoři se pokusili pře vyprávět příběh královohradecké bitvy z 3. července 1866, a to v úzké vazbě na její reflexi a komemoraci v 19. až 21. století, aby tak doložili, že i toto datum náleží mezi dny, které tvořily české dějiny.

Soumrak samurajů
Po dlouhá staletí dominovali Zemi vycházejícího slunce příslušníci vojenské vrstvy – samurajové. Pod jejich vládou Japonsko zaznamenalo od počátku 17. století období prosperity, vnitřní stability a míru. Tváří v tvář západní hrozbě se vojenská vrstva ukázala jako neschopná zemi efektivně bránit a se vznikem moderních institucí a ozbrojených sil se stala anachronismem. Po letech otřesů, úkladných vražd, válek a revolucí se samurajové náhle stali minulostí a Japonsko se vydalo vstříc modernímu světu. Tato kniha vůbec poprvé nabízí pohled na tento složitý a bouřlivý proces v českém jazyce. Českému čtenáři se tak otevírá zcela nový svět Japonska na konci doby samurajů v éře tzv. restaurace Meidži, která znamenala zásadní přelom v dějinách celého Dálného východu.

Kniha Arthura Koestlera „Příslib a naplnění“ se zabývá historií Palestiny od tzv. Balfourovy deklarace, která v roce 1917 slibovala Židům zřízení národní domoviny v Palestině, do let 1948–1949, kdy Izrael obhájil svou existenci ve válce proti Arabům a začal klást základy státní existence. V první části se seznamujeme s komplikovaným „trojúhelníkem“ vztahů mezi britskou mandátní správou, Židy a Araby. Autor těží z detailní znalosti Palestiny, v níž strávil jako levicově smýšlející sionista několik let a kam se jako novinář opakovaně vracel. Tato okolnost mu umožňuje, aby doplnil základní politicko-hospodářský dějinný rámec zasvěcenými sondami do mentality všech tří aktérů palestinského dramatu. Bez vědomí propastného rozdílu mezi vysoce vzdělanými, převážně levicovými a nadšeně budovatelskými sionisty a tradicionalistickou, konzervativní a skoro úplně negramotnou populací palestinských Arabů nelze jejich konfliktu porozumět. Neméně zásadní je však i Koestlerův výklad rozdílů mezi židovskými starousedlíky a imigranty z doby po roce 1918, stejně jako výklad příčin proarabského postoje většiny britských politiků a úředníků. Na řadě míst autor přesvědčivě obhajuje svůj psychologizující výklad historie. Ve druhé části předkládá zkušenosti a zážitky z pobytu v Izraeli, kam přiletěl v průběhu židovsko-arabské války počátkem června 1948, přičemž se zčásti jedná o zápisky deníkového charakteru. Čtenář se z nich mj. dozví, jak je možné, že se většina židovských osad za války ubránila drtivé arabské početní a technické převaze. S autorem navštíví i Jeruzalém, který se ocitl v obležení Arabské legie a Židé museli vynaložit veškerý um a odvahu, aby nearabskou část města z této kritické situace vyprostili.

Nyní, kdy se renesanční osobnosti z povrchu zemského už vytratily, není takový přístup zajisté ani praktický, ani žádoucí. Každou z hlavních fází dějin Británie zde do hloubky zkoumá specialista, který se příslušným obdobím zabývá, avšak svá zjištění vždy zaměřuje na běžného, nikoli odborného čtenáře.
