Věrnost a zrada v ohroženém městě
Od samého počátku rebelie, jež se rozhořela v polovině roku 1618, považovali reprezentanti vzbouřených českých evangelických stavů strategicky položené a dobře opevněné České Budějovice za mocnou překážku prosazování svého politického programu.
Byli si velmi dobře vědomi jednoznačné početní převahy stoupenců katolické církve mezi tamním obyvatelstvem a jejich naprosté dominance v lokálních mocenských strukturách. A tak už 25. června 1618 přistoupil čelný stavovský vojevůdce Jindřich Matyáš hrabě z Thurnu a Valsassiny k obléhání předního jihočeského královského města. Předcházela tomu jednání s budějovickými reprezentanty, která měla být podle Thurnových představ korunována otevřením městských bran. Místo toho však způsobila politický rozkol uvnitř ohrožené obce: mezi většinou měšťanů prosazující bezvýhradnou věrnost habsburské dynastii a konšelským sborem, v němž dočasně převážily kapitulantské hlasy. Během budějovické vnitroměstské konfrontace došlo k povážlivému otřesení autority vrcholného samosprávného orgánu, jehož členové však nebyli sesazeni z konšelských postů. Několika lokálním politikům se totiž podařilo městskou radu obratně převést do tábora jednoznačných odpůrců stavovské revolty. Následující komunikace Budějovických s exponenty vzbouřených stavů se vyznačovala ostražitým taktizováním, ze kterého jednoznačně profitovalo královské město. Obléhatelé se nechali vmanipulovat do sofistikované diplomatické hry, na jejímž pozadí promarnili reálné šance na zdolání městských hradeb. O výsledku kampaně tak bylo rozhodnuto dříve, než zápas o České Budějovice na podzim 1618 přešel do otevřených ozbrojených střetů. Předložená kritická edice přináší unikátní soubor dokumentů, které se vztahují převážně k období od června do září 1618.
Tyto prameny dosud nebyly uceleně zpřístupněny a obsahově vytěženy, ačkoliv svým významem dalece přesahují lokální kontext českobudějovického dění. Zásadně přispívají k hlubšímu poznání počátků české války, jež odstartovala sérii konfliktů, pro které se posléze prosadilo označení třicetiletá válka. Představené písemnosti, mezi nimiž má exkluzivní místo korespondence Budějovických se samotným Jindřichem Matyášem Thurnem, vrhají nové světlo na dramatické události v prvních měsících po pražské defenestraci z 23. května 1618. Přispívají tak k hlubšímu poznání období, kdy se jižní Čechy staly exponovaným prostorem soupeření mezi rebely a stoupenci habsburské dynastie. Tyto události do značné míry předznamenaly neúspěch stavovského povstání a měly dalekosáhlé důsledky pro další běh evropských dějin.
Limity lidskosti
Kniha zachycuje české země na pomezí druhé světové války jako prostor nekontrolovatelného kolektivního násilí. Celkový pohled propojuje s podrobnými svědectvími a vzpomínkami. Na mnoha příkladech se pokouší vysvětlit jednání, které se dodnes vzpírá pochopení.
Prostřednictvím velmi otevřených popisů nabízí čtenářům uvedení do doby, kdy se posouvaly limity lidskosti, tedy hranice tolerovaného násilí. Masakry a projevy krutosti přesto i po ukončení bojů zůstávaly součástí lidského jednání, neboť je vykonávali konkrétní lidé. Nelze je tedy chápat jako nějakou nelidskou, zvířecí brutalitu.
Limity lidskosti představují hlavní aktéry kolektivního násilí v letech 19441946 a na řadě příkladů poukazují na opakující se situace a v nich působící síly, jež eskalaci násilí umožňovaly či dále podporovaly. Potvrzují, že násilí tehdy nebylo pouhým selháním jednotlivců, ale složitou výslednicí situačních sil, které se mohou kdykoli a kdekoli znovu objevit.
Iloncsí
Denník sa našiel pri rekonštrukčných prácach v niekdajšom kaštieli Czirákyových. Obsahoval listy, poznámky a fotografie, ktoré dnes uchováva Umelecké a historické múzeum Flórisa Rómera v Győri. Do ucelenej podoby ich spracoval Lajos Kovács. Do slovenčiny knihu preložila Anna Šimkuličová.
Denník je unikátnym pohľadom aristokratky, zdravotnej sestry, no najmä citlivej a vzdelanej ženy na udalosti prvej svetovej vojny. Je jedným z najsilnejších svedectiev z obdobia prvej svetovej vojny. Pre slovenského čitateľa je zaujímavý nielen svojim jedinečným príbehom, ale aj faktom že veľká časť udalostí, ktorých sa týka sa odohrala na území dnešného Slovenska.
Češi pod německým protektorátem
Zásadní monografická práce o dějinách Protektorátu vyšla poprvé česky v roce 1999. Pro současné vydání ji autor podstatně přepracoval, doplnil o cca sto rukopisných stránek, v nichž zohlednil vývoj poznání dané problematiky až do současnosti a v některých dílčích aspektech korigoval své závěry.
Profesor Detlef Brandes, známý a všeobecně uznávaný německý historik specializující se mj. na česko-německé vztahy ve 20. století, zachycuje ve své práci kompletní dějiny tzv. Protektorátu Čechy a Morava. Na základě podrobného studia jak českých, tak německých pramenů podává faktograficky bohatou syntézu německé okupační politiky, české kolaborace a odboje, jakož i všech stránek veřejného života v Čechách a na Moravě v letech 19391945. Oč zdrženlivější je ve svých explicitních hodnoceních, o to více promlouvají uváděná fakta. Monografický charakter práce, jakož i šíře a hloubka zpracování dané tematiky nemá obdoby v české ani německé literatuře. Pro svou mimořádnou objektivitu je ceněna německými i českými historiky a jako základní dílo zůstává nepřekonána. Tento její význam podtrhuje i autorův mimořádný přínos pro současné, tj. třetí české vydání díla.

Kniha je souborem vzpomínek pamětníků druhé světové války, výpisů z kronik a písemně sepsaných pamětí, doplňujících a upravujících knihu Čvančarovy deníky. Ne vše, co nám bylo předkládáno v době totalitního režimu bylo pravdivým svědectvím událostí roku 1945 a s odchodem posledních svědků bychom tomu věřili. Naštěstí se lidé nebáli psát a hovořit o těchto dějinných zvratech tak, jak je sami prožili ve svém dětství a mění tak náš pohled na dobu, kterou bychom nechtěli prožít. Válka se dotkla míst, kterým nevěnujeme pozornost, protože o nich nevíme a neuvědomujeme si, že šlapeme po místech které psaly naší historii.
Snad po přečtení této knihy pochopíme, jak je důležité lidské vyprávění a naslouchání odkazům, které nám jsou předávány. Válečné dítě vnímalo smrt a krutost svým osobitým způsobem a vidělo to, co dospělý neviděl. Bylo tam, kam se jiný bál jít a slyšelo to, o čem se nesmělo hovořit. Díky jim tak můžeme spatřit válku v jiném rozměru a poopravit spisy kronikářů. Odchází nám ale příliš rychle na to, abychom se mohli vrátit a v našem psaní pokračovat.

V německém zajetí
Válečné memoáry Jiřího Beneše, synovce prezidenta Edvarda Beneše, vyšly již půl roku po skončení války a jsou výjimečné svým obsahem a osobou autora, který byl právě pro svůj příbuzenský vztah k prezidentovi v době okupace perzekvován. Poprvé byl zatčen gestapem v roce 1940. Byl internován na Pankráci a po řadě výslechů v Petschkově paláci byl propuštěn. Podruhé byl zatčen v lednu 1943 a do května 1945 byl vězněn především v německých koncentračních táborech Auschwitz, Buchenwald a Dora, kde byl jako otrok zaměstnán při výrobě tajných německých zbraní V1 a V2. Kniha je obsáhlým a zevrubným dokumentem o situaci vězňů v německých koncentračních táborech, je pozoruhodná i svým klidným a věcným výkladem. Zachycuje při tom detailně konkrétní nelidské zacházení s vězni, jejich týrání a zabíjení i celkovou děsivou atmosféru vyhlazovacích táborů. Celou prací prolíná autorova otázka: Jak se stalo, že přední, vysoce kulturní evropský národ, se propadl do takové nelidskosti? „Válka se skončila a čas pomalu osušuje slzy. Němci jsou podrobeni trestu. My, kteří jsme prožili německou okupaci a přežili německé koncentrační tábory, víme, že je to trest zasloužený, třebas mnozí z nás předpokládali v době otroctví, že trest bude přísnější. Ale časem se mnoho zapomíná a mohlo by se stát, že po letech budou naše děti jinak hledět na děti dnešních Němců, a zcela jistě děti dnešních Němců budou vidět jen trest a budou hledět zapomenout na vinu svých otců a matek. Je proto třeba zajistit důkazy o tom, jak hluboko pod úroveň dravé zvěře klesl německý člověk v letech 1939 až 1945. Jistě i mnozí z naší generace nebudou moci uvěřit, jak šílené krutosti byl schopen výkvět německého národa. Je proto třeba vydat svědectví těch, kdo viděli a prožili. Tato kniha je mé svědectví.“
Staring at God: Britain in the Great War
