Knížka představuje druhé, podstatně doplněné a rozšířené vydání úspěšné stejnojmenné knižní publikace Jaroslava Kopáčka a Jana Bednáře (Karolinum, 2002). Oproti prvnímu vydání jsou v knize více akcentovány atmosférické úkazy a jevy objevující se zejména v souvislosti s výraznými až extrémními počasovými projevy, mj. tropické cyklony. Zcela nově je přidána kapitola o jevech souvisejících s výraznou atmosférickou konvekcí. Čtenář se dozví o formování oblačné elektřiny, elektrických výbojích v atmosféře, o blescích, struktuře bouřkových oblaků, vzniku krupobití, tromb, tornád a dalších souvisejících úkazech. Co je život?
Přestože nemůžeme vyloučit, že se život v nějaké primitivní podobě nachází i jinde ve sluneční soustavě, pouze na Zemi se jedná o fenomén takřka všudypřítomný. V nejrůznějších formách jej najdeme na souši i v oceánech, ve vzduchu i pod zemí, v termálních pramenech i na vrcholcích hor. O životě víme mnohé, ale řešení té nejdůležitější otázky nám nadále uniká. Kdysi si ji v knize Co je život? (1944) položil i slavný fyzik Erwin Schrödinger a jeho příkladu následovaly celé zástupy vědců. Kdy se neživot změnil v život? Kde se to stalo? Co k tomu bylo potřeba? Co mají všechny živé formy společné? A konečně, měli bychom řešení této otázky hledat v biologii, nebo spíše v chemii a fyzice, popřípadě někde úplně jinde?

Autor, ktorý je pracovníkom Geomagnetického observatória Ústavu vied o Zemi Slovenskej akadémie vied, napísal túto knihu pre pomerne široký okruh čitateľov. Je to ojedinelá kniha v slovenskom jazyku so zameraním na magnetické búrky a blízke kozmické okolie Zeme.
Aby textu rozumeli nie iba študenti fyziky a inžinieri, autor zvolil špeciálny prístup. Východiskom, z ktorého štartuje táto kniha, sú síce elementárne zručnosti z vyššej matematiky, avšak fyzikálne poznatky potrebné k porozumeniu materiálu vychádzajú skôr z aparátu dobre zvládnutej stredoškolskej fyziky. Potrebnú pokročilejšiu fyziku, ktorá býva náplňou vysokoškolských kurzov, vysvetľuje autor priamo v tejto knihe!
Hoci je kniha zameraná na problematiku slnečno-zemských vzťahov a geomagnetickej aktivity, fyzikálne odvodenia, ktoré sú v nej ukázané, môžu byť poučné aj pre kozmické okolia iných planét.
Mnohé z toho, čo je potrebné na pochopenie magnetických búrok, je v knihe aj matematicky odvodené. Autor sa snaží presvedčiť čitateľa, že veľa zaujímavých poznatkov v takej modernej oblasti vedy, akou je kozmická fyzika, sa dá priamo odvodiť zo všeobecne známych základných fyzikálnych zákonov, z ktorých obrovská časť bola známa už dávno, už v 19. storočí.
Mať či byť?
Technické utópie napríklad lietanie uskutočnila nová veda o prírode. Humánnu utópiu mesiášskej doby zjednoteného nového ľudstva žijúceho v solidarite a v mieri, oslobodeného od ekonomického určenia a od vojny a triedneho boja možno dosiahnuť za predpokladu, že na realizáciu humánnej utópie vydáme rovnakú energiu, inteligenciu a zanietenie, aké sme vydali na realizáciu našich technických utópií. Nikto nevie postaviť ponorky čítaním Julesa Verna, nikto nevie vybudovať humanistickú spoločnosť čítaním prorokov.
Či sa takáto zmena od nadvlády prírodnej vedy k novej spoločenskej vede odohrá, nemôže povedať nikto. Ak áno, mohli by sme mať ešte vždy šancu na prežitie, ale či sa tak stane, bude závisieť od jedného faktora: od množstva brilantných, vzdelaných, disciplinovaných a starostlivých mužov a žien, ktorých priťahuje nová výzva k ľudskej mysli a fakt, že tentoraz nie je cieľom kontrola nad prírodou, ale kontrola nad technikou a nad iracionálnymi spoločenskými silami a inštitúciami, ktoré ohrozujú prežitie západnej spoločnosti, ak nie celého ľudstva.
Som presvedčený, že naša budúcnosť závisí od toho, či sa, vzhľadom na uvedomenie si súčasnej krízy, najlepšie mysle zmobilizujú a obetujú sa pre novú humanistickú vedu o človeku.
