Otto Rubensohn’s Excavations on Paros I: The Sanctuaries on Kounados Hill is the first volume in a forthcoming series of editions of archival sources from the estate of the German archaeologist Otto Rubensohn, housed in the archives of the Jewish Museum in Berlin. It contains the transcription of three texts concerning the sites (small ancient sanctuaries) on Kounados Hill on the Greek island of Paros (in the Cyclades), with the original photos.Otto Rubensohn (1867-1964) was a German archaeologist of Jewish origin. Although his involvement in the field of archaeology was relatively short and he spent most of his career teaching in elementary and secondary schools, he is now one of the respected German archaeologists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, primarily because of his excavations on the Greek island of Paros and in Egypt. Unfortunately, his importance for German and Greek Classical archaeology and Egyptology is still not fully understood and appreciated.As the sanctuaries on Kounados were rather preliminarily published by Rubensohn and haven’t been excavated (or thoroughly investigated) in the last 120 years, the transcription and publication of the unpublished texts and images will add some new information on these sites as well as on the history of archaeology in Greece at the turn of the last centuries.The book is intended for archaeologists, dealing with Greek archaeology, and historians specializing in the history of archaeology (or the history of science and intellectual history in general).

Mechanisms of Change and Creativity in Nature and Culture
This Element is about change. Specifically, it''s about the underlying mechanisms that cause change to happen, both in nature and in culture; what types there are, how they work, where they can be found, and when they come into play. The ultimate aim is to shed light on two barbed issues. First, what kind of system of change is culture and, second, what kind of change in that system counts as creativity; that is, what are the properties of the mechanisms of change when we explore unknown regions of the cultural realm. To that end, a novel theoretical framework is proposed that is based on the concept of a sightedness continuum. A sightedness framework for the mechanisms of change can integrate the three mechanisms causing gradual, adaptive, and cumulative change ? evolution, learning, and development ? into a single dimension and provide a clear view of how they cause change.

Druhý díl unikátní trilogie mapuje historii roku 1942, který byl mimořádně významný, ale i tragický pro čs. odboj. Žádná z publikací, která je v současné době k dispozici, zatím tento rok nepřibližuje takovým způsobem, jako tato. Čechy a Morava si v roce 1942 prošly zřejmě vůbec nejtěžší a nejdrsnější dějinnou zkouškou, jejíž krajní výsledek mohl představovat i hromadný transport českého obyvatelstva na východ, a tedy definitivní likvidaci národa jako celku.
Publikace obsahuje více než 1 600 dobových fotografií a unikátních dokumentů, na kterých spolu s doprovodnými texty v originálním chronologickém zpracování zachycuje zásadní události, a to s kalendářní a časovou přesností, přičemž dění v protektorátu líčí v souvislosti s mezinárodním vývojem.
Autor se stejně jako situací v protektorátu zabývá i hrdinstvím příslušníků čs. zahraniční armády, kteří se v severní Africe a na Blízkém východě rvali s příslušníky říšské branné moci, či se účastnili formování československého samostatného polního praporu v SSSR. Je třeba zdůraznit, že nejde o reedici prvního vydání z roku 1997 (ohraničené tehdy roky 1941–1943), ale o vydání podstatně rozšířené, doplněné a opravené.

Pojem „kontemplace“ se v poslední době stal velmi populárním, a to především v rámci rostoucího zájmu o spiritualitu. Nespočet publikací nabízí návod, jak snadno a rychle docílit lepšího výkonu v práci, klidnějšího života či kvalitnějšího spánku apod.
Přestože tyto „pozitivní“ efekty mohou (převážně) v úvodních fázích kontemplace skutečně nastat, cílem této duchovní činnosti vůbec nejsou. Kontemplace je totiž především o vztahu. Její podstatou je důkladné očištění od všeho, co brání vnímání Boží přítomnosti v hlubině lidského nitra. Prostřednictvím neustálého „odevzdávání“ všech vnitřních i vnějších distrakcí v kontemplativní modlitbě se proměňuje lidské vnímání a vědomí. Kontemplace tak postupně vede ke zkušenosti a poznání Zdroje našeho bytí a k následnému růstu důvěry a velké vnitřní svobodě.
Proměněný pohled a nově získaná svoboda však nezůstávají uzavřeny samy v sobě, v nitru člověka, nýbrž zvou k aktivnímu (nikoli aktivistickému) životu. Kontemplativní život je totiž součástí života Božího a my nejsme zváni k ničemu menšímu než se jej účastnit. Tato účast se projeví ve zdravé rovnováze mezi kontemplací a činností.

Ames uses comparative cultural hermeneutics as a method for contrasting classical Greek ontology ("the science of being in itself") with classical Chinese "zoetology" ("the art of living"), which is made explicit in the Yijing?or Book of Changes. Parmenides, Plato, and Aristotle give us a substance ontology grounded in "being qua being" or "being per se" (to on he on) that guarantees a permanent and unchanging subject as the substratum for the human experience. This substratum or essence includes its purpose for being (telos) and defines the "what-it-means-to-be-a-thing-of-this-kind" (eidos) of any particular thing, thus setting a closed, exclusive boundary and the strict identity necessary for a particular thing to be "this" and not "that." In the Book of Changes, we find a vocabulary that makes explicit cosmological assumptions that are a stark alternative to this substance ontology. It also provides the interpretive context for the canonical texts by locating them within a holistic, organic, and ecological worldview. To provide a meaningful contrast with this fundamental assumption of on or "being," we might borrow the Greek notion of zoe or "life" and create the neologism "zoe-tology" as "the art of living" (shengshenglun?). This cosmology begins from "living" (sheng?) itself as the motive force behind change and gives us a world of boundless "becomings": not "things" that are but "events" that are happening, a contrast between an ontological conception of human "beings" and a process conception of what the author calls human "becomings."
Apóha - nominalismus a poznání v buddhistické filosofii
Apóha (dosl. „vyloučení“) je buddhistická sémantická teorie, pomocí které se buddhističtí nominalističtí filosofové pokoušeli vyřešit otázku statusu universálií. Zatímco indičtí metafyzičtí realisté tvrdili, že universálie (s?m?nya) skutečně existují a jsou současně přítomny v mnoha různých věcech, podle buddhistů byly skutečné pouze jednotliviny (lak?a?a), universálie naopak chápali jako pouhé mentální koncepty, které nemají reálnou existenci. Indický buddhistický filosof Dignága (asi 480–540 po Kr.), jeho následovník Dharmakírti (asi 600–670 po Kr.) a další se domnívali, že například obecný termín „kráva“ označuje vše, co není ne-krávou. To znamená, že definovali krávu jako jednotlivinu, aniž by přijali pozici realistů, že termín „kráva“ je založen na obecném „kravství“, které je inherentně a věčně přítomné ve všech jednotlivých kravách.
Diskuse buddhistických nominalistů s jejich realistickými oponenty, který v Indii trvaly téměř šest set let, se někdy až pozoruhodně podobají debatám mezi středověkými realisty a nominalisty o problému universálií.
Nauka o apóze, v níž se silně prolíná sémantika, epistemologie i filosofie jazyka, patří mezi nejdůležitější a nejpropracovanější témata buddhistické filosofie vůbec.
Heuréka! - Kapesní průvodce kreativitou
Knih o kreativitě a jejím „rozvoji“ vyšlo v posledních letech nespočet, ale jen málokterá se dokáže vydat za hranice obecných pouček, motivačních sloganů či banálních rad typu „buďte pozitivní a myslete jinak“. Heuréka! mne překvapila hned několika věcmi. Především rozsahem a hloubkou, do které se nebojí ponořit. Michal Jelínek dokáže zařadit kreativitu do kontextu vědy – opírá se o kognitivní psychologii, neurovědy, lingvistiku i vlastní terénní výzkum mezi designéry a architekty. Díky tomu se z pouhého „návodu na kreativitu“ stává dílo, které seriózním způsobem odkrývá, co se v naší mysli vlastně děje, když na něco nového přicházíme. prof. RNDr. Aleš Stuchlík, Ph.D., DSc. [výňatek z odborného posudku] Kniha Heuréka! je úžasnou výpravou do světa kreativity a procesu formování nápadu (ideace). Mike Jelínek v publikaci vypráví o zkušenostech nabytých během praxe tvůrčího designéra a vysokoškolského lektora. Texty této knížky vycházejí především z jeho dizertační práce, ale na rozdíl od často velmi nudných a nezábavných akademických textů se snaží být snadno stravitelným osobním průvodcem na cestě k rozvoji tvůrčích schopností a porozumění vědě, která za vznikem nápadů stojí. V sázce je opravdu mnoho. Živočišné i rostlinné druhy rychle vymírají, planeta se otepluje a celé lidstvo dnes čelí obrovské ekologické krizi. Počet lidí, kteří v nejrůznějších koutech světa aktivně praktikují buddhismus, závratně roste. Mohli by buddhisté zasáhnout do debaty o životním prostředí? Mohly by buddhistické zásady a praktiky přispět k záchraně naší planety, toho jediného domova, jejž máme?

Stručné dějiny 20. století
Kniha provází čtenáře nejdůležitějším děním uplynulého století, jež vymezují letopočty 1914 až 1989, tedy od počátku první světové války až do zániku Sovětského svazu. Dvacáté století označuje za americké století, neboť Spojené státy americké v něm sehrály rozhodující roli na poli mocenských vztahů, ale i v oblasti novátorského, „moderního“ způsobu života a kultury. Autor se hlásí ke zdánlivě překonanému pojetí dějin, jež dává přednost roli mimořádných jedinců před vlivem ideologií a obecně společenských trendů. Říká, že Josef Stalin a Adolf Hitler a na druhé straně Winston Churchill a Franklin Roosevelt byli prvořadými hybateli 20. století. Nebýt jich, jeho dějiny by se ubíraly velice odlišnými cestami.
Kniha se zaměřuje hlavně na dění v Evropě, neboť to formovalo poměry na celém světě. Nyní se ovšem dostává do popředí mimoevropský vývoj, daný vzestupem Číny i jiných neevropských zemí. V závěru tedy konstatuje, že končí jak věk světových válek, tak rozdělení Evropy, ale také evropský věk. I tak vyznívá kniha optimisticky: vidí sice příznaky úpadku ve sféře kultury a umění, ale v politické oblasti je demokracie při všech nesnázích celosvětově na vzestupu.

Izrael: Stručné dějiny znovuzrozeného národa
Přestože Izrael poutá pozornost celého světa, neexistovala dosud žádná historicky důkladná a vyvážená kniha, která by vyprávěla jeho příběh širšímu okruhu čtenářů jako tato. Její detaily nezamlžují celkový příběh. Gordisova kniha poutavě vysvětluje samotnou myšlenku židovského státu – kde se zrodila, jak se udržovala při životě a jak se tento sen proměnil ve skutečnost. Kniha Izrael: Stručné dějiny znovuzrozeného národa líčí příběh státu, který je navzdory očekávání už tak dlouho úspěšný, ale přesto čelí hrozivým – někdo by řekl neporazitelným – nepřátelům a překážkám. Je to příběh národa, jenž se znovu zrodil, ale za obrovskou cenu. Příběh o Izraeli je komplikovaný, dramatický i smutný.
