„Nikomu nebylo do spánku. Kolem čtvrté hodiny ranní bylo z ulice slyšet hluk nákladních aut. Potom křik německých povelů, rány v bytě kostelníka a řev u vchodu do kostela. Zády opřeni o sloupy v kostele seděli tři muži. Když se rány ozývaly v rychlém rytmu blíž a blíž, všichni tři rychle vstali, promnuli si oči a schovali se za sloupy. Tam čekali, co bude. Křik a rány se přenesly od bytu kostelníka ven, na ulici před kostel. V tuto chvíli už bylo jasné, že místo, kde se skrývali devatenáct dní, bylo prozrazeno. Jediná možnost ústupu byla přes vchod do kostela. Nemožné. Odtamtud začala střelba, i když jen tak naslepo. Nepřítel zatím nevěděl, kde jsou schovaní, ale věděl, že tam někde jsou. Byla jen otázka času, kdy budou muset opětovat palbu a tím se prozradit. Ještě byla naděje, že další čtyři spolubojovníky, kteří se skrývali dole v kryptě, útočníci nenajdou.“
Nová kniha dokumentaristů Martina Mahdala a Markéty Adamcové vypráví příběh zapomenutého hrdiny československého druhého odboje Josefa Bublíka, který zemřel spolu s dalšími parašutisty 18. června 1942 v kostele sv. The Curse of Empire
Russia's attack on Ukraine marks an epochal break in European and global history. Undoubtedly, the decision to go to war is closely linked to one person, Vladimir Putin, but Russia's war is not driven solely by one man's power calculations. We can only make sense of Russia's actions in Ukraine, argues the distinguished historian Martin Schulze Wessel, by putting them in the broader context of the history of Russian imperialism and the influence it continues to exert today. Schulze Wessel argues that Russian imperialism was shaped by Russia's relationship to Poland and Ukraine. These states were absorbed or partitioned by Russia in the eighteenth century, but Russia's rule over them was contested both by the Poles and by the Ukrainians. The entangled history of these three states produced path dependencies whose impact is still felt toda. Poland and Ukraine share a common history characterized by Russian domination and Polish and Ukrainian resistance to it; just as the Polish question challenged the Russian Empire in previous centuries, so too does the Ukrainian question today. Schulze Wessel argues that, as a result of Russia's confrontation with the Polish and Ukrainian questions, Russia's national identity merged with imperial claims in ways that were pernicious and consequential – the curse of empire. By placing the war in Ukraine in the context of an era of Russian imperialism that spans three centuries, this book sheds new light on one of the bloodiest and most destructive conflicts of our time. Things Needed to Get Better
In this book Jürgen Habermas offers a wide-ranging reflection on his life and work and on the factors that shaped the development of his thought. He discusses the motives behind his work, the circumstances under which it emerged and the changes it has undergone over the course of his long and productive career. He speaks about the events and the texts that played a decisive role in his thinking and he recounts key encounters with colleagues. The image that emerges is that of a richly intertwined network of relationships which covers large swathes of the intellectual map of the twentieth century and reaches through to the present day. West Asia
At the end of the twentieth century, the United States birthed a new Middle East order built on realpolitik and a stable balance of power. Three decades later that order has been destroyed. America's disastrous invasion of Iraq along with the failed Arab Spring created a vacuum that has allowed revisionist powers to extend their influence across the region. In West Asia, Mohammed Soliman argues that it is time for the United States to move decisively away from nation-building and get back to the business of order-building. To do so will require zooming out, in both geographical and historical terms, to build a new regional order across 'West Asia' – from the Middle East to South Asia, connecting Europe to the Indo-Pacific via the Mediterranean and Red Seas. Zamýšľa sa nad dopadmi vplyvu umelej inteligencie na poradenskú činnosť a jej účinkom na budúcu podobu tejto atraktívnej profesie.
Ľudovít Novák. Súborné dielo V. (1981 - 2005)
Piata, záverečná časť súborného diela Ľ. Nováka obsahuje syntetický výklad vlastnej koncepcie etnogenézy Slovanov (Vznik Slovanov a ich jazyka), komplexnú genetickú a typologickú charakteristiku slovenčiny (Aký jazyk je slovenčina), ďalšie rozpracovanie už dávnejšie publikovanej tézy o príznakových a nepríznakových nulových morfémach (Špecifickosť morfologických nulovostí v slovanských jazykoch) alebo pozoruhodné úvahy o vysokoškolskej výučbe historickej gramatiky (Tak trochu esejisticky o vyučovaní historických gramatík). Ľ. Novák sa zaoberal aj témami z dejín slovenského jazyka, princípmi výstavby fonologických štruktúr a ďalšími teoretickými otázkami. Obdivuhodná bola v tomto období jeho prednášková činnosť prakticky vo všetkých pobočkách Slovenskej jazykovednej spoločnosti: tézy jeho prednášok sú publikované v bulletine Zápisník slovenského jazykovedca. Väčšina týchto prednášok je ladená spomienkovo; poslucháčstvo ich prijíma ako autentické svedectvo o slávnych rokoch Pražského lingvistického krúžku a o priekopníckej ére modernej slovenskej jazykovedy. Ako jeden zo zakladateľov Slovenskej akadémie vied a umení približuje Ľ. Novák v rozhovoroch okolnosti, za ktorých bola táto inštitúcia ustanovená v roku 1942. Niektoré teórie a výsledky vedeckých úvah autora dnes už berieme ako samozrejmé, časom sa stali kolektívnym vedeckým vedomím.
Deadline
In Deadline: 200 Years of Violence against Journalists in the United States, Elizabeth Atwood offers the first comprehensive look at the history of fatal attacks against journalists in the United States between 1829 and the present. Atwood describes the political, technological, and economic context of these assaults, and includes brief biographies of the victims and accounts of what happened both them and to their assailants after the attacks. To help us understand these attacks, Atwood presents a framework for categorizing them, built on John Nerone’s studies on assaults on American media workers. Atwood categorizes attacks against journalists as attacks against individuals, ideas, and media institutions, and undertaken to suppress reporting on certain topics and in the context of wars and other international or conflicts. Crucially, Deadline utilizes this framework to offer possible solutions to the issue of violence against journalists. Atwood was inspired to explore the pressing issue of violence against American journalists after the tragic death of one of her colleagues at the Baltimore Sun, Rob Hiaasen, in the Capital Gazette shooting in 2018. Throughout, she demonstrates that distrust of the media and violence against the press in the United States are hardly new developments. Her work examines how intimidation, violence, and censorship have, in fact, been used against the American press since both its and the nation’s founding.
Aktuálne medicínske a právne aspekty asistovanej reprodukcie
Prvýkrát v slovenskom akademickom priestore sa tematika asistovanej reprodukcie spracúva v takomto rozsahu a hĺbke, pričom publikácia spája medicínsky, právny, etický aj medzinárodnoprávny rozmer problematiky. Reaguje na absenciu ucelenej odbornej literatúry, ktorá by reflektovala komplexné výzvy ART v slovenskom právnom a zdravotníckom systéme. Výrazne prispieva k odbornej diskusii v oblasti, kde legislatíva často zaostáva za technologickým vývojom a spoločenskými zmenami. Publikácia „Aktuálne medicínske a právne aspekty asistovanej reprodukcie“ má potenciál stať sa referenčným dielom pre tvorcov legislatívy, akademickú obec, odborníkov na zdravotnícke právo, ako aj pre lekárov a odborníkov pracujúcich v oblasti reprodukčnej medicíny. Je to zásadný príspevok k formovaniu odbornej diskusie o hraniciach a možnostiach asistovanej reprodukcie v 21. storočí na Slovensku.

Vzal na sebe způsob služebníka
Pomáhat druhým je přirozené — ale co znamená pomáhat „křesťansky“? Tato kniha ukazuje, že diakonie není jen dobročinnost, ale hluboký projev víry a společenství. Čtenář zde najde jak inspiraci, tak podněty k promýšlení, jak se křesťanská solidarita může žít dnes.
Tato kniha je hledáním teologického profilu teologie služby či teologie diakonie. Slovem hledání chci vyjádřit, že kniha není monologem autora formulujícím to správné stanovisko, třebaže autor stanovisko má, ale od počátku je diskusí s různými pohledy, diskusí tak živou, že čtenář má chuť do diskuse také vstoupit. Kniha je inspirující četbou pro profesory i užitečnou a současně přístupnou četbou i pro studenty, kterým může sloužit jako základní studijní zdroj v oboru.
