Eroding Democracy from the Outside In
The end of the Cold War gave way to a fundamental shift in the structure of the international system. It was an era characterized above all by liberal triumphalism in which Western politicians and policymakers turned to international organizations (IOs) to spread and reinforce liberal values. These IOs, backed by the West, proliferated at exceedingly high rates, with democracies in particular becoming fully integrated members. Scholars agreed with policymakers, finding overwhelming evidence that these IOs were positive forces for democracy, and for several decades liberal democracy appeared ascendant. However, beginning around 2010, liberal democracy''s forward march abruptly halted, and ongoing evidence of democratic backsliding ---an historically unprecedented phenomenon in which democratically elected officials erode liberal democratic institutions--- calls into question the post-Cold War narrative of liberal democratic triumphalism. What explains democracy''s sudden reversal of fortune and the emergence of this new form of democratic regression on the heels of unmatched international integration and support for liberal democracy? Eroding Democracy from the Outside In proposes a novel international-level theory of democratic backsliding. In the decades after the Soviet Union fell, IOs became not only much more common, but a certain subset of these organizations also gained unprecedented power and influence over domestic affairs and substantive, highly salient economic and political policy outcomes. One unintended consequence of this increased delegation of economic and political policy authority to powerful IOs has been that over time core domestic representative institutions, such as political parties and legislatures, have been eroded, while power has been increasingly concentrated in the hands of executives who represent their states at the international level. These weak institutions, unable to either represent citizens'' wide-ranging interests or act as a check on growing executive power, have paved the way for would-be autocrats to consolidate their hold on the state. The result all too often has been democratic backsliding.

Jestliže u Huizingy dominuje dvorská, burgundská kultura s jejími jinotaji, pak u Pleije hraje prim zemitá lidová kultura, v níž je vše dovoleno a v níž se lidé oddávají snům hlavně proto, aby se člověk alespoň na chvíli dokázal přenést přes každodenní strasti.
Jak se používá literatura
Příručka o tom, jak číst, vnímat a využívat literární texty
Literární teoretička Rita Felski nabízí nový, osvěžující pohled na to, jak přistupovat k literatuře. Její kniha obhajuje čtení jakožto nezastupitelnou instanci, přičemž Felski se snaží překlenout propast mezi literární teorií a čtenářsky zaujatým přístupem (common sense); zkoumá jednotlivé třecí plochy i styčné body v hledání odpovědi na otázky, proč a jak čteme. Každý pokus vysvětlit hodnotu literatury musí být podle ní založen na zkoumání motivů čtení, a v to ve spektru jejich různorodosti. Autorka předpokládá, že tyto motivy se vzájemně nevylučují. Představuje čtyři rozdílné způsoby uvažování o literatuře a jejím čtení. V literatuře můžeme (1) rozpoznat sami sebe, literatura může také (2) okouzlovat, (3) zprostředkovávat vědění nebo (4) šokovat. Konstatuje, že termíny literární vědy a výrazy subjektivního přožitku čtení se od sebe vzdálily a že je potřeba hledat způsob, jak tuto propast překonat.

Rostliny naší přírody, 2. vydání
Akvarelový atlas zahrnuje vyobrazení 789 převážně dominantních planých bylin přírody České republiky, ať už původních, zavlečených či invazních. Originální obrázky, malované výhradně podle živého materiálu, jsou doprovázeny krátkými texty o ekologii druhu, rozlišovacích znacích, které nejsou patrné z obrázku, popřípadě o příbuzných druzích a jejich určení. Poznámkově je zde tedy zmíněno (někdy i v detailech vyobrazeno) dalších 231 druhů či poddruhů, takže celkový počet zde uvedených taxonů je 1020; to představuje téměř polovinu planých bylin České republiky. Doc. RNDr. Lubomír Hrouda, CSc. (1945) přednáší botanické disciplíny na Přírodovědecké a Pedagogické fakultě UK a je rovněž pracovníkem Botanické zahrady přírodovědecké fakulty UK. Baťa - Inspirace pro Československo
Nová publikace přibližuje jeden z velkých symbolů meziválečného Československa – firmu Baťa. To jméno bylo symbolem úspěchu a každý věděl, kdo je to Tomáš Baťa. V cizině ho uznávali jako krále obuvi a viděli v něm jednoho z nejznámějších Čechoslováků. Bohatě ilustrovaná brožura na skoro sedmdesáti stránkách ukazuje, v čem Tomáš Baťa předbíhal své současníky. Byly to nejenom nejmodernější obuvnické stroje, ale i letecká doprava, filmová tvorba, zemědělský a chemický výzkum, originální architektura s výstavbou mrakodrapů. Hodně přispěl k založení brněnského muzea Anthropos, otevřel obuvnické muzeum ve Zlíně. Stavěl školy a reformoval výuku. Splnil svůj závazek stát se největším daňovým poplatníkem v republice. Hodně peněz investoval do proměny Zlína v zahradní město se špičkovým zdravotnictvím, školstvím, komunikacemi a s rostoucím počtem podnikatelů – a tím vším hmatatelně ukázal principy nazývané dnes odpovědným kapitalismem. Na stránkách této publikace si dnešní čtenář může povšimnout, v kolika oborech dosáhl neobyčejného úspěchu zlínský průmyslník a starosta a zároveň šéf světové obuvnické říše Tomáš Baťa. Stejně tak se každý může zamyslet nad tím, jak se u Bati poučit a navázat na něj.
Kriminalistická olfaktorika
Koncem léta 2023 na dně Slapské přehrady, desítky metrů pod hladinou, kde lidské oči ani technika nic neodhalily, policejní pes svým čichem nalezl tělo oběti. Jeden jediný nádech stačil k odhalení pravdy, kterou by sonar i moderní přístroje ponechaly skrytou. Přesto právě tato schopnost je stále ještě zpochybňována a psovodi musí přesvědčovat soudy, že psí nos má v trestním řízení své nezastupitelné místo. Kriminalistická olfaktorika se rodila pomalu – mezi skepsí, nevírou a snahou vybojovat jí uznání jako seriózní důkazní metody. Dnes stojí na rozhraní mezi tradicí a budoucností: na jedné straně služební psi, kteří dokáží vycítit stopu člověka i pod vodní hladinou, na straně druhé olfaktronika, slibující chladnou přesnost strojů. V sázce je více než jen technika – jde o otázku, zda pachové stopy zůstanou pouhým podpůrným důkazem, nebo se jednou stanou klíčem k odhalení pravdy stejně pevně jako otisky prstů či DNA.
Udavači
V roce 1942 došlo v Příbrami k tragické události. Na základě udání byli z malicherných důvodů zatčeni a krátce nato popraveni ředitel reálného gymnázia dr. Josef Lukeš, student Antonín Stočes a jeho otec Vojtěch Stočes. Tato událost se stala hned po válce námětem pro Jana Drdu, který ji literárně zpracoval v povídce Vyšší princip. Z povídky pak vycházel slavný stejnojmenný film, natočený roku 1960. To představuje jednu z linií poválečného uchopení tohoto příběhu. Druhou se stalo pátrání po udavači, resp. udavačích. Od poloviny šedesátých let minulého století se vyšetřování odvíjelo v režii Státní bezpečnosti. Byl odsouzený Miroslav Červenka skutečně jediným viníkem smrti tří lidí, které dobře znal? Nebo to byl jen omezený, naivní mladík podléhající fatálnímu vlivu svého staršího spolužáka, který se za okupace „dal k Němcům“?

Český rozvod s c.a k. monarchií
V létě 1914 vstupovala rakousko-uherská armáda do války naplněná optimismem. V nových uniformách a s kapelami, které vyhrávaly Zachovej nám, Hospodine či Radeckého marš, ovšem ozývaly se i melodie velkoněmecké. Po čtyřech letech válčení však Rakousko-Uhersko z mapy Evropy zmizelo. Změnila se přitom i česká politika. Na počátku války nebyla v českých zemích významnější politická strana, která by se programově zasazovala o samostatný stát. Teprve zvýšený tlak militaristických kruhů, který zbortil demokratické instituce v rakouské části monarchie, a sbližování Rakouska s prušáckým Německem přivedly českou politickou reprezentaci (domácí i exilovou) na cestu k samostatnosti.
Čeští zástupci odmítli nesmělé pokusy císaře Karla na federalizaci Rakouska a prostřednictvím skupiny kolem T. G. Masaryka, jež organizovala československé legie, získali podporu dohodových státníků. Na konci října 1918, ve chvílích, kdy „stát československý vstoupil v život“, už zase vyhrávaly v ulicích kapely: namísto rakouských vojenských pochodů zněly melodie Františka Kmocha.
