A Real Right to Vote
Why it’s time to enshrine the right to vote in the ConstitutionThroughout history, too many Americans have been disenfranchised or faced needless barriers to voting. Part of the blame falls on the Constitution, which does not contain an affirmative right to vote. The Supreme Court has made matters worse by failing to protect voting rights and limiting Congress’s ability to do so. The time has come for voters to take action and push for an amendment to the Constitution that would guarantee this right for all. Drawing on troubling stories of state attempts to disenfranchise military voters, women, African Americans, students, former felons, Native Americans, and others, Richard Hasen argues that American democracy can and should do better in assuring that all eligible voters can cast a meaningful vote that will be fairly counted. He shows how a constitutional right to vote can deescalate voting wars between political parties that lead to endless rounds of litigation and undermine voter confidence in elections, and can safeguard democracy against dangerous attempts at election subversion like the one we witnessed in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. The path to a constitutional amendment is undoubtedly hard, especially in these polarized times. A Real Right to Vote explains what’s in it for conservatives who have resisted voting reform and reveals how the pursuit of an amendment can yield tangible dividends for democracy long before ratification.
How Not to Be Human
Current debates in the environmental humanities, animal studies, and related fields increasingly revolve around this question: What to do with “the human”? Is the human a category worth preserving? Should it be replaced with the post-human? Should marginalized and minoritarian groups advocate for a universal humanism? What is the relationship between humanism and anthropocentrism? Is a genuinely non-anthropocentric mode of thinking and living possible for human beings? This book argues that the writings of twentieth-century poet Robinson Jeffers offer twenty-first-century readers a number of crucial insights concerning such questions and timely advice about how not to be human. For Jeffers, our tendency to turn inward on ourselves and to indulge in human narcissism is at the heart of the social, economic, and existential ills that plague modern societies. As a remedy, Jeffers recommends turning ourselves outward—beyond the self and beyond the human—and learning to affirm and even love the inhuman cosmos in all of its terrible beauty. In the process, Jeffers helps us find our way back to ourselves, but this time no longer as “human” in the traditional sense but as plain members of the inhuman world.

Autorova kniha vyšla v USA v osmdesátých letech minulého století, kdy dominovala televize, jeho kniha tedy pojednává především o vlivu tohoto média.
V televizi (ale platí to dodnes) je kladen výraz na vizuální stránku, zábavnost, senzačnost, emoce. Zprávy nemají v první řadě informovat, nýbrž být zajímavé. Divák nad nimi nestíhá přemýšlet, protože televize chrlí jednu zprávu za druhou. To ovlivňuje i způsob, jakým se prezentují politici nebo představitelé církví a jakým se učí na školách. Lidé nevolí politiky podle jejich politické vize, ale spíše podle vzhledu a zábavnosti. Žijeme ve „světě kukátka“, kde je informací mnoho, ale nedávají smysl. Být inteligentní znamená spíše vědět o ledasčem, a nikoli to skutečně znát. Z vážných věcí se stává show a z občanů pasivní konzumenti, kteří se smějí, aniž by vlastně věděli čemu. Autor vybízí, abychom kvůli vizuálním médiím neslevovali z intelektuálních potřeb a vážnosti, jež jsou podle něj typické pro kulturu tištěných médií.

Through a comprehensive analysis of the writings of Cyril of Alexandria and some of his contemporaries in the early fifth century East during the time of the Pelagian controversy, this book demonstrates that a central and consistent theme of their soteriology revolves around the sinfulness and guilt of all humanity that is rooted in Adam''s sin by nature and is resolved only through recapitulation into the new root, the second Adam, the impeccable Christ.
