Arany János elbeszélő költeménye 1846-ban született a Kisfaludy Társaság pályázatára, amely kifejezetten "népies formájú" költői beszélyt várt egy, a "nép ajkán élő" történeti hősről. A mű végül elnyerte a pályadíjat, és a következő évben könyvként is megjelent, országos ismertséget hozva alkotójának.
